I don't know about you guys, but I'm freaking tired of the Kris Aquino-James Yap issue already. I did not even bother watching the local shows over the weekend and yet, all I hear, watch, and read these days are still all about the issue -- enough to learn whatever I missed over the weekend. But when you get to learn details like the sexual position of James Yap and his rumored lover (who also reportedly did a Monica Lewinsky), don't you think there are far bigger issues that we need to be discussing, especially that the elections is just less than three months away?

I bet the Philippine Daily Inquirer, which has been publishing a front-page item on the issue since Sunday, will come out today with another front-page article related to it (Maybe something connected with James Yap's campaign support for Kris's brother, senatorial bet Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, like it did yesterday).

Don't you think we, in the local press, do something like this?

Is the media trying to stage a celebrity intervention on our behalf?

Judging from recent ratings the public can't seem to get enough of the Anna Nicole/Britney, all round celebrity news coverage (even Oscar numbers were up this year). However, in the last few weeks it's begun to seem that the media powers-that-be may have had their fill.

Early warning signs were apparent a while ago when Daily News gossip columnist Lloyd Grove attempted to ban Paris Hilton from his column. Then, at the height of the Anna Nicole Smith news extravaganza, Lou Dobbs told Wolf Blitzer that there would be no Anna Nicole Smith coverage on his hour at CNN.

This was followed by a warning from Brian Williams that he was also jumping the Anna Nicole/Britney meltdown media ship (at least for the night).

And then the AP announced that "the print team is planning an unconventional experiment: We are NOT going to cover Paris Hilton." (The announcement was actually made on Feb. 13 and was only in effect for a week, so we guess we can't really fault them for this.)

If this trend continues perhaps US Weekly reporters really will find themselves looking for Osama Bin Laden, while the rest of us finally sort out the differences between Sunni and Shiite.

2. Dating ground stewardees siya at napaalis sa dating tinatrabahuhan.
3. May kasama ito na pinaalis din na siyang nagsulsol para ilbas ng iskandalo.
4. Nang tinanong ito tungkol sa tsismis na pakikipagrelasyon kay James, sinabi ni Hope na hindi totoo.
5. Hindi siya nagresign kung hindi siya ay nag-awol matapos mapagsabihan na hintuan ang pakikipagmabutihan sa mga surgeon at ibang kliyente.

6. Itinour niya ang mga press people sa mga cubicle sa kaniyang clinic para ipakita na napakaliit nito para magkaroon ng sinasabing intimacy nina Hope at James. Eh kung nakatayo?

7. Pinarerenovate niya ito para magkaroon pa ng salamin.
8. Pinaalis na raw niya ang body scrub para a mga lalaki?

The campaign season is officially on. Are we getting relevant information about the senatorial and party-list candidates from the press? Is the press helping us decide who to vote for on May 14? Or are we just getting more confusing and misleading information?

Watch for the results of the 2007 Media and Elections: Media Monitoring—the latest project of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR)—which will be released soon, to find out how the press is covering the 2007 senatorial and party-list campaign and elections.

CMFR has been monitoring the performance of the press since 1989. Its landmark citizens’ media monitoring project in the 2004 presidential elections, which included coverage of television, was a first in the Philippine electoral experience. The 2004 citizens’ media monitoring project, which included citizen groups in a broader media watch of press coverage, was also the first time that reports were released during the campaign period.

Melinda Quintos de Jesus, the executive director of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), discussed media and democratic development last January 25 at the fourth session of the “Transformation in New Democracies" conference organized by the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy.

"Democratic communities must foster a new relationship between the press and the public, more connected and more interactive," De Jesus said in her speech. "Such a relationship will evolve a new kind of journalism to meet the challenge of the age of democracy."

Spent the night Saturday on one of the most beautiful islands in the world as a wedding guest.

Hopped on a plane in Manila at 830 Saturday morning, landed 45 minutes later, took a one-and-a-half hour bus ride, a ten-minute ferry ride and a ten-minute tricycle ride and ended up some 420 km from home at Fairways and Bluewater - an upscale resort and golf course that friends from church kindly allowed me to use for free! Since I arrived past noon, I didn't have much time to prepare for the 4PM wedding. I showered and changed and turned on HBO and caught a quarter of the movie, The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (note to self - rent or borrow this!).

I took the resort's shuttle to nearby Waling-Waling Beach Resort and three minutes later found myself looking at this view.

The couple decided to let the afternoon sun set a bit before beginning the ceremony. It was simple... fun... relaxed... a happy- tear jerker. Pictures followed and guests then dined on seafood, pasta, salads and barbecue, among other yummy weddingy foods.

Dancing followed at nearby Club Paraw. Guests formed a parade behind the newlyweds as we walked along the beach carrying glass lanterns while waiters carried torches. At the entrance, we were greeted by a fire dancer!

I emceed the post dinner festivities where the newlyweds did variations on the bridal bouquet and garter tossing. The couple's first dance as husband and wife was a fun choreographed number - Next's song, Wifey. Really cute.

We danced until 230 in the morning and went out for fruit shakes at Jonah's 24-hour fruit shake place. Seriously. I highly recommend the choco peanut flavor (doesn't come with fruit in it!). I'm a nut for Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! We then hung out with the couple at their suite before calling it a night at 430.

My flight was at 0955 so I had to check out at 630, meaning I didn't really get any sleep. Nor did I get to swim, or snorkel or get a massage or any of the other fun Boracay staples. But it's alright. There's always another time.

Harrison Ford. I was 7. He was Han Solo. I know. Very almost Electra Complex. It's much more than twenty years later and he still makes me... smile. The kind of smile that spreads across your face when you're alone in a crowd and see an old friend - it's comforting. Like a favorite t-shirt, or a favorite scent. Of course, the Calista factor in his life now is... disappointing - leave wife of thirteen (?) years and date much younger woman but... I guess if you're Harrison Ford you can do that...

This was me when I hosted a morning show on Philippine radio. This came out in a local magazine called - FWD. My life now is less rock star and more sedate. However, my ex-partner is a real life rock star. He plays drums for an award-winning band called Imago. Working together for five years made him one of my closest friends - the kind you can yell at, or cry with, or laugh with and at - without any romantic attachments whatsoever.

After a lame Valentine's, I was on a roll today.

I had promised my best friend Maricar to take her to the movies today. Even though I teased her that she'll receive no flowers, I felt that it was appropriate to give her a gift. It is hard to pick a nice inexpensive gift with 10 minutes to spare, so I was sweating profusely and in panic mode.

Good thing there was Marks & Spencer, the savior that it is as always.


Of course, we can't decide where to get lunch. We ended up at Duke of York Pizzeria.


The place was cozy and well-lit.


We got the garlic & shrimp, and barbecue-something pizza.


I ordered the Queen's sampler

and she chose the Manhattan Brooklyn sampler.

The food came cold but tasted okay. I loved the pizza, especially the garlic & shrimp half. The fries looked like it came only from the supermarket's frozen section, while the cajun chicken strips were forgettable. I was not sure of her spaghetti though.

I am not sure what I was doing here. Either I was sneezing or praying.

My friend was strangely shy that day.

We watched "The Messengers" afterwards. We have this hobby of seeing together comedy films disguised as horror flicks. While others are screaming their lungs out, we are giggling at the idiotic moments unraveling before our very eyes.

She went home after that, and I attended my first and only class. But not before she toured me in her campus.

I was on a roll. And so were my grades. Rolling down the cliff they go. My first quiz in Signal Processing was a disaster.

I decided to go see the World Light Expo along Coastal Road in the hope of distracting me. But the ticket price was too steep for a student like me. I know it is pretty and all, but I'd rather waste my 300 bucks on coffee or good food.

And that is where I stopped rolling.

I am angry. Very angry. No, make that mad. Fuming mad.

My professor at Transmission of Signals laboratory scheduled a makeup class today. Why? Because he was absent for the last three meetings, that's why.

So I got up early, made coffee, left the house and flagged the tricycle. And then the text message came. He can't make it. YET AGAIN.

Good thing I've always been a bit tardy and was still inside our village. Or else I will never ever forgive him for canceling when I'm halfway to school.

And no, he cannot set a makeup class next Saturday and ruin my summer getaway that I've been dreaming of since last year's summer getaway. I just will not let him do that.

Never underestimate an insomniac who got up early to attend a subject that should not have been on a weekend. The same insomniac who had summer classes last year (and will have summer classes this year) and who is allowed only a two-day beach vacation each summer.

God I need some sleep.

I finally talked to my father again. That means our night ping pong sessions will resume once again.

Oh what joy!

My mouse broke, so I had to get it replaced. I went to Mall of Asia.

I was supposed to buy my summer shirts today as well. But I found out the store has already moved on to a new collection, and they're all gone. I've been meaning to buy them since last year. Now, I'm paying the price for my procrastination.

Feeling upset, I headed to Chocolat, my favorite cake station, for comfort. I had a slice of NY Cheesecake and the requisite Cookies 'n' Cream milkshake.

It was heavenly.

The cheesecake was thick yet soft and creamy. But by the time I devoured half of it, I was full and sick of it already.

I must confess that I am was under a self-imposed starvation to make my body look decent for the summer.

As I was devouring my cake, the Friday night fireworks started and I totally missed it. The Top Dog was not feeling very top that night so I decided to head home.

I took the shuttle and continuing my mini-run of bad luck, the driver was totally reckless. He was a madman. I can count at least three incidents where we almost got hit/hit someone. This includes almost side-sweeping a poor old man on a bicycle.

But the first one was, uhm, the most memorable. It was less than five minutes after he started the van when he decided it was fun to beat a racing bus to turn a corner.

We were literally a feet from being bumped. The girls, all ten of them, just screamed at the top of their lungs. I think I set a personal record for repetitive cuss-firing that very moment. Pota. Good thing I was on the far side, or I would've been screaming like a rooster for dinner as well.

Imagine the emotional scar the girls on the near side would have to recover from. Bless them.

I looked up, and realized the van's ceiling looked like the interiors of a coffin.

Great. Just great.

While passing the beautiful World Light Expo, we saw their fireworks show. We were just a few meters away from the actual firing spot. It was that amazing I forgot to take photos.

That wonderful moment made me relax for a bit and smile at least.

Well last Thursday I have been chatting along with my officemates during our lunchbreak. So anyway we were 7 guys and 3 girls. Now we experimented a "dating" chat while eating our lunch. The 3 girls would pretend to be the "girl who we would propose to" and we guys would each mention some of our pick-up lines and they would rate how well they liked our pick-up line. Sa TV Patrol, sinabi ni Atty. Raymund Fortun na walang HIMALANG nangyari sa Belo clinic dahil nilalagyan nila ng belo ang mga ...ano ba ang pinagsasabi ko.

Ulit. Sabi ni Atty Raymund Fortun na abogado ni Vicki Belo, na hindi raw sa clinic nangyari ang mga luhuran at mga....erase, erase...

Para bang Kris at Hope kaya lang programa pala yon ni Jerry Springer na hindi ko pinanood (Kung di lang ako naliligaw)kasi talaga namang bulgaran doon anoh. Sabunutan at sampalan ang asawa at ang mistress. Hinarap ni misis ang asawa at inumbag. Arayy.

Tinanong ni Springer ang mister kung bakit siya ay nagtaksil-taksil-taksil-taksil
*heh* hintuan mo yan....(mali-mali po ako).

Sagot ng mister...kasi raw ay tinutukso siya. Ahaa. kasalanan ngayon ng babae. Kung ayaw niya, hindi siya magpapatukso. Isa pa meron daw silang nagagawa sa mga babaeng ganito na hindi nila magawa sa kanilang asawa.

This is a long overdue purchase. Almost everyone I know has a copy. It pumps me up on faith and challenges me to reprogram my mind - how I see myself, how I see my life.

This was actually given to me by a friend who personally knows the author! It's reminding me about the importance of purpose and mission.

And finally, this is what I'm hoping to buy, or borrow, next.

"Cheenee Sofiaaa…." ang pa-singsong na tawag ni daddy habang abala ang lolo't lola sa pakikipaglaro kay Cheenee. Napakagandang pangalan.

Noong nasa college pa lang ako, may isang kaklase na lumapit at nagpapa-suggest ng pangalan ng baby.

Aktwal na usapan ang nasa ibaba:

Luz:  Huy, ano magandang pangalan ng boy?

Ako: ha? Bakit naman ako pa tinanong mo?? *sabay napakamot sa ulo*

Luz: kasi unique ang pangalan mo!

Ako: Eh..?

Matapos mapaisip sandali..

Ako: Alam ko na! Pangalan para sa boy kamo…? Nebuchadezzar!

Luz: Naman! * sabay tawa*

Ako: Unique sabi mo! Walang nagpapangalang ganyan these days! *ngising aso*

AKo: Tutankhamen!!!

Luz: *sabay hataw sa akin habang tumatawa*

Sa aso, kung magpangalan ang iba, yung pinaka-cute na pangalan! Ginger, Peach, Poochy, Tinkerbell etc. Shempre sa mga tamad magpangalan, Whitey, Brownie, Chocolate, Blackie at Spottie, ok na. Minsan naman, isinusunod pa sa popular na pigura: Marcos, Erap, Mega, Cory, Echo, Pacquiao, atbp.

Sa aso, kung magpangalan ako, gusto ko sa tunog pa lang killer-dog na ang dating: andyan ang Bruno at Bogart. Pero naging jinx ang mga astiging pangalan ng aso para sa amin. Matapos ang ilan pang short-lived dogs with really ferocious-sounding names, napag-isip isip ko, di swerteng magpangalan ng astig para sa aso. Nagpangalan ako ng Tagpi at Bantay, matagal-tagal namang  nabuhay. Sinabi ko na nga ba! Simple lang mga aso namin. Di kelangan ng grandiosong pangalan!

Nakukuha din ng aso ang katangian ng kanyang pangalan paminsan minsan. Ang aso naming si Bantay, magaling namang magbantay ng bahay. Dati, dahil makalokohan akong bata, pinangalanan kong "kitten" and isa naming tuta. At ng magkaron kami ng cute na  beagle naman, pinangalanan ko ng Poopy. Poo-poo naman ng poo-poo!

Ibat iba ng paraan ng pagpapangalan ang tao. Para sa tao man o sa alagang hayop, may kanya-kanyang dahilan. Junior para isunod sa ama ang aktuwal na pangalan. Ibig din ng mga magulang sa sundan ang yapak ng ama. Merong isinusunod sa idol. Mga anak nga ni Bayani Agbayani, Rosalinda at Marimar... lahat ipinangalan sa Mexican telenovela ni Thalia. Merong may kaugnayan sa propesyon: tatay ko nga, pinangalanang Judy Sharie ang aming bunso (na napilitan tuloy mag-law..hehe), daddy ko kasi ay RTC Judge. Meron pang iba, Justice at Judge naman.

Meron din namang totoong makabayan, magkakapatid na Makisig, Mayumi at Magiting. Meron pang Ampere, Watts at Volts dahil si daddy kasi nila ay electrical engineer. Meron din, pangalan ng magkakapatid: Apple, Peaches at Orange (Aberin sisters).. At si Vilma Santos, bakit pinalayawang Lucky si Luis Manzano? Kasi nga naging “lucky” sya sa career simula ng lumitaw si Luis. Ngayon, hiyang-hiya si Luis tuwing tinatawag syang Lucky.. machong macho para tawaging Lucky. (I love you Lucky!)

Nalaman ko na ang balak ipangalan ng isa kong kapatid sa magiging anak nya ay makalumang pangalan. Isusunod sa mga lolo ng bata. Isip isip ko, hindi kaya magalit ang bata paglaki nya dahil mukhang inaamag na ang pangalan nya? Hehehe. Pero.. pansin ko lang, nagiging uso na din ngayon ang makalumang pangalan, mas sophisticated ang dating, timeless ika nga. Sina Tintin Bersola at Julius Babao, Antonia nga ang ipinangalan sa baby! Sina Aga Muhlach at Charlene Gonzales, Andres naman yung isa sa twins. Galing kaya yung pangalan kay Andres Bonifacio.. atapang atao hindi atakbo? (haha)

Nang makidnap si Jethro, at naging laman ng broadsheets(kahit tabloid) at nabalita sa TV, naikwento ng magaling na sharpshooter na si Jethro Dionisio sa aking asawa na madami daw tumawag sa kanya at nagtanong kung anak nya si Jetho! Baka nga naman screen name lang ni Jethro Dionisio ang apelyidong Dioniso, baka Jethro Chua, Sr sya at junior nya ang nakidnap! hehe

Sa totoo lang, noong mas bata ako, ayokong ayokong tinatanong ako sa history ng aking pangalan. Unique nga, sobrang unique na kahit wala yata apelyido, dead-sure ako na nag-iisa ako sa sangkamunduhang may ganitong pangalan. Nariyang sabihin na napakamakabayan daw siguro ng parents ko at tagalog na tagalog ang pangalan ko. Nariyan ding pagkamalang Muslim ako. At ang pinakamatindi, sa foreign subscriptions at kahit local, inaaddress ako na MISTER sa halip na MISS o MISSIS! Aray! Bukod pa dyan ang madalas na maling mga spelling na pangalan ko. (Kainis! Hehe)

Isip isip ko nga, sana Jennifer, Michelle, Aileen o Tina na lang ang pinangalan sa akin.Yan ang top 4 na pangalan sa mga kakilala ko! Kahit madami kaming Jennifer, Aileen, Tina o Michelle,  at least wala ng tanung-tanong kung sa kinuha pangalan ko. Di pa ako mapagkakamalang lalake! hehehe

Pag tinatanong nga ako kung ano real name ko bukod sa Lami, sinasabi ko, “Wag na, Lami na lang.” Sinasabi ko ding kahit hulaan, di nila mahuhulaan, nahahawig kay Rumplestiltskin!

Kaya ng magkaanak ako, simple lang din ang pagpapangalan naming ginawa. Kinuha naming ang paborito naming pangalan. Mahirap sumunod sa uso, nauso ang Joshua, Nicole, Bea, Krissy, Ethan, Paolo, Matthew. Kaya napansin ko sa pre-school, marami ang magkakapareho ang pangalan sa magkakaedad. Uso nga ngayon ang dalawahang pangalan.  Nauso siguro kasi dahil walang itulak kabigin sa dalawang pangalang pinagpipilian. O para siguraduhan na sa dalawang kombinasyon ng pangalan, bihira ang makakapareho?

Sa tao, eto ang  paborito kong mga pangalan.. Bruce, Brendan, Dana, Keira, Gian, Sofia, at Voltaire. Si Henry naman, gusto ang Lance, Cheenee, Jethro, Henri.

Mahulaan mo kaya kung ano ang totoo kong pangalan?

My tattoo turned ten last February 17. I got it when I was a jock in NU 107. I was assigned to cover a music/tattoo

festival at Intramuros and immediately thought of actually getting one on my finger. Two weeks after getting the assignment and countless design ideas in my head, I went to the festival set on subjecting my skin to a lifetime of permanent ink, painfully etched on in less than five minutes.

Seriously.

Nothing prepared me for the agony of the needle but submit myself I did to the expert hands of Alfred Guevara. Could he put an anesthetic or some kind of numbing solution? I asked. No, was his reply. I figured it was a rite of passage for anyone with body art to simply endure. So I sat and screamed and forced my body to relax and screamed some more and tried to recall my Lamaze breathing techniques - but to no avail. It hurt. Bony parts are the most painful, Alfred explained. Thanks, Alfred, I know.

The agony went on for a good three minutes. The whole time I kept remembering my mom's voice that afternoon. "You're going to look like an ex-con!", "You'll be stuck with it forever, Thelma Elaine!", "What's gotten into you?!", "Baka isipin ng mga tao, kriminal ka!" ["People might think you're a criminal!"] Twenty-seven year old me could only smile and say, "Mom, I know what I'm doing. I'll have to live with it. I want to live with it." To which she gave her resigned, "Bahala ka. ["It's up to you."] It's your choice."

And choose I did. To stop Alfred from taking the design full circle around my finger. The pain had gotten even worse as he reached the skin where the top meets the palm. It literally felt like he was cutting off my finger! So stop he did as tears rolled down my cheeks.

I looked at him and smiled. "It's so pretty..." Sob. Sob.

The night went on with me sharing my experience live on the air. I went home with petroleum jelly covering my new ring and the pride in knowing I was now part of an unspoken club - the tattooed.

Over the years I have added more - a ring around my toe, a tribal anklet, a floral anklet and dainty leaves on my left ear lobe. Many people ask - those with untrained eyes at least - are those real? To which I reply yes. Did they hurt? Of course they did! Why'd you get them? I wanted them, I always smile.
