Monitoring news media coverage of the elections; and why journalists should blog

Posted by Bryanton Post on Monday, March 5th, 2007 @ 1:26 pm in Politics.

What a tiring day. We just held earlier our round table discussion on monitoring the news media coverage of the elections. Will update you on what happened. Right now, I just want to sleep -- except I have to finish something for Mr. Vergel Santos first (about it, won't tell you that yet).

Anyway, here's Tarra Quismundo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer reporting on the forum:

Media watchdog monitoring poll coverage

Underlining the media’s role in helping the electorate vote correctly, the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) has begun a three-month review of the election reportage of leading media outlets in order to assess their performance in this election.

Despite limited manpower and resources, the CMFR has started monitoring the election coverage of three major dailies and six television news programs, reprising its effort during the 2004 elections.

“It’s important because we want to know how the media are providing the public the information it needs so that it can make informed choices. The usual complaint in the Philippines is that we haven’t been choosing our leaders very well, so one of the ways the media can help in that area is by providing the information that the people need,” CMFR deputy director and journalism professor Luis Teodoro said.

I think BusinessWorld also has a report ("Media challenged to pursue depth in election coverage") on the forum, but I can't access the online version because I am not subscriber of the newspaper's website. Oh well. Will check it later in the office.

For the meantime, while I am so so busy these days, here's a piece on why journalists should blog. Got this item from cyberjournalist.net.

Why journalists should blog

Chris Cobbler, publisher of the greeleytrib.com, says all journalists at newspapers should blog.

Blogging helps you better understand your audience. The hallmark of any blog is the ability for readers to post comments to what you write. By having this regular conversation with readers, you learn what hits and what misses.

In this Corner of the Universe, Piolo and Erik -totoo ba?

Posted by CelebritiesCorner on Monday, March 5th, 2007 @ 12:09 pm in Entertainment.

Aesop’s fable

Posted by Carpe Diem on Monday, March 5th, 2007 @ 6:42 am in Personal - Philippines.

i used to be an Aesop's Fables reader as a kid. The blog entry below (which i got from  Sanj) has one of the best lessons to teach adults like us.

When i was a child i used to read aesop's fables, they were little stories with animals in them and they always had a moral to the story. people always send u stuff via email of little stories with a little moral at the end so i thought id share one with u that someone sent me!

There was once a boy who always got angry at the littlest of things, so his dad said to him one day whenever u get angry, put a nail in the fence, so he did. Over the next few months he became less angry as it took him a lot of effort to put the nails into the fence, he gradually stopped getting angry. Then his father said to him for every day that u dont get angry take a nail out of the fence, so he did. As he tried to take the nails out of the fence, they left holes in the fence. Eventually he took all the nails out of the fence but the fence was not the same, it was full of holes!

When we get angry we say a lot of things we may not necessarily mean, although we may apologise for it later, we have still left a mark on that person forever (like the hole in the fence!!). You may say something out of anger but depending on the person and how sensitive they are and their relationship with you they may never forget those words you said in anger. So try not to get angry and if you do try and watch wat u say!!

In case you haven’t seen these

QotD: The Best Blend

Posted by Carpe Diem on Monday, March 5th, 2007 @ 6:38 am in Personal - Philippines.

What's your favorite blend or brand of coffee or tea?

It's like going against the grain... because when it comes to coffee I like Gloria Jean's.

i mean here in Manila, going to Starbucks for coffee is the most common thing. But not me. Honestly, i think GJ suits my tastebuds just right: the aroma, the taste, the blend... very easy on my discriminating taste ;p

I was the first in the family to explore Gloria Jeans, Henry followed, then my in-laws.

And yes, my in-laws are the biggest Gloria Jeans drinkers  these days in the family ;p.

Paul Wasicka is the 2007 National Heads-Up Poker Champion!

Posted by msquareone.com on Monday, March 5th, 2007 @ 4:11 am in Personal - International.

Full Tilt sponsored pro, Paul Wasicka defeated fellow FTP-pro, Chad Brown to take the Heads-Up Championship this year.  (It's worthwhile to note that he also came in second at last year's WSOP Main Event.)

While some of my favorites got eliminated early, such as Phil Ivey, Howard Lederer, Andy Bloch, Allen Cunningham and Chris Ferguson, the Team Full Tilt did quite well overall with 3 of the final four, including Paul.

Here is the winning hand courtesy of PokerWire.com

Chad Brown raised to 25k preflop and Paul Wasicka called. Wasicka checked the Ks10d9d flop and Brown bet 25k. Wasicka reraised to 70k and Brown moved in for his remaining 243k. Wasicka immediately called.

Wasicka had flopped the nut straight and left Brown drawing to runner-runner. The 2c turn wrapped up the match and the National Heads-up Championship for Paul Wasicka.

Paul Wasicka wins $500,000 for the championship, and Chad Brown takes home $250,000.

“You got another blog?!” my daughter exclaimed, “I can’t believe you mom!”

I look across the table at my seventeen-year old with shock and disbelief in my eyes as I stare at her and begin my taunt. “YOU are shocked at me for getting blog number THREE, Miss I-have-FIVE-blogs-floating-around-in-cyberspace!” I can’t stop myself. “You’re the one with all the “copyrights” on your pet du nom!” I tease, “Miss I am ‘——–.whatever.com’ username you!” Ha ha ha.

She rolls her eyes, “What’s it called?”

“thelmabowlen.wordpress.com”, I reply. “Everywhere and Here… again.”

“Wow, mom. How original.”

“Look who’s talking!” I laugh.
