Hottie of the moment: Katharine McPhee

Posted by Pinoy Guy Guide on Monday, March 12th, 2007 @ 4:39 pm in Lifestyle.

She's from American Idol and she is so gorgeous. Seriously she is such a hottie. Combining her beauty and her voice I must say that she has indeed found her way to stardom. Currently her hit single "Over it" is topping the charts on both radio and tv here in the Philippines. Now for those who haven't seen Katharine, here she is :) Fair use disclaimer: This photo is courtesy of Headline

A night before their wedding, the guy went to his girlfriend’s house. While waiting for his fiance’e at the living room, her hot young sister asked, “If you’d like to have sex with me, I’m just upstairs.” The guy stood there, shocked and confused… until he made up his mind and turned back to go [...]

Vacations, Holidays, Time Off

Posted by msquareone.com on Monday, March 12th, 2007 @ 5:20 am in Personal - International.

As I've posted on my blog before, I'm now temporarily living in Ireland.  My company has relocated here from California, and we've agreed to move to Dublin for two years.  I've made many observations about how life here in Europe is different from the US, and even the Philippines.  Today, I'm posting about one aspect in which I believe the US should follow suit: vacations (or holidays as it is referred to here.)

The Irish sure love to take their vacations!  Some info:

  • The standard mandatory vacation time is 20 days per year.  (In the US, you get a measly 10 days.) That's a whole month, people.  This of course increases with position/rank, amount of time at your job and other factors.
  • On top of that, in Ireland, you get 9 public holidays per year.  Mind you, these aren't all on -real- holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and the like.  They even had to make up 'bank holidays' as an excuse to take some more time off.  These are scattered amongst 4 Mondays throughout the summer.
  • Plus you get the customary sick and personal days on top of that.
  • The vacation business is huge here in Ireland.  It's everywhere online, newspapers and the many travel agencies you'll find at malls and such.

In all, for my situation, I get almost two months' time off this year.  Yay!  This almost balances the pains of being away from home since our family has a lot of learning and exploring to look forward to over the next couple of years.

Being in Ireland, and with the availability of low-cost carriers, it's (relatively) affordable to see the rest of Europe.  This is our plan for the next two years.

So, my wife and I sat down last week, pulled out a calendar, and started planning our vacation schedule for the year.  So far, here is what we have:

  • April: Trip home to California for a week.  We need a quick sunshine fix and visit with family. We might sneak in a quick trip to Vegas as well.
  • May: Planning to do a quick four-day weekend this month.  Not sure yet where we're going, but likely somewhere close by, either in Ireland (Galway, Belfast) or Scotland or Wales.
  • July: Week in Spain.  We are exchanging part of our timeshare in Vegas for a week at one Marriott's beach resorts in either Malaga, Marbella or Ibiza which are in the south of Spain.  We're still working out the details and picking which resort to go to.
  • July, August, September:  These are the summer months which we plan on taking every opportunity to go out and explore.  We're still working on plans for these, but places on our radar are:
  • Rome, Italy
  • Venice, Italy
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Stockholm, Sweden
  • October: Halloween in Paris.  We exchanged the other half of our Vegas timeshare for a week at the Marriott's Village d'Ile-de-France which is right beside Disneyland Paris.  We'll spend the week visiting the usual Paris landmarks.  It'll also be a good opportunity for the kids to spend Halloween at Disneyland.
  • December: Christmas and New Year's in London/Belgium/Amsterdam. Last December, we had a rather quiet new year's eve with just my wife and two kids.  The kids were already asleep, and my wife and I huddled in front of the TV with a slice of cake and watched the celebrations in London.  They had quite a fireworks display which cost several million Euros, some free concerts, and a parade the next day among other things.  We knew right then that we had to be in London this year, so that's the plan.  The Christmas holiday is quite long (12 days) so we plan on taking a train to Brussels, Belgium and/or Amsterdam during this stay as well.

As you can see, we're really taking advantage of this opportunity.  Can't believe we actually have time this year to do all this.

...plus we have 2008 to see the rest.

How do you handle phone calls from telemarketers?

I ask for their home phone number and tell them I'll call them back at dinner time!  That usually gets a laugh from them, then I politely (or sometimes impolitely by necessity) hang up on them.

Why I Don?t Heart Wikipedia Much

Posted by Everywhere and Here on Monday, March 12th, 2007 @ 3:43 am in Personal - Philippines.

To echo my Disclaimer, “This blog does not represent my employers’ opinions in any way…”

My initiation into Wikipedia was unpleasant. Like going to the dentist for a filling… or getting out of bed the day after a strenuous workout… or… taking cough syrup. Unpleasant but necessary.

An entry on Every Nation, the ministry I work for, had been contributed to by individual editors making the article appear slanted in their favor and un-encyclopedic. The goal of Wikipedia is to be able to gather multiple viewpoints attributable to (a) reliable published source(s)”, and into entries that are verifiable and written in a neutral point of view.

Good premise but in reality, and more specifically, in my experience, a nightmare to achieve. The Every Nation page came to my attention through members of my church. Uninitiated at the time in the workings of Wikipedia, I clicked on the Discussion Page to orient myself on what was being said about Every Nation. A personal concern turned into a professional one as it became a red flag at work. The following days found me creating an account/user name, reading up on Wikipedia guidelines, and making amateur attempts to remove the biases from the page.

As is the common mistake of new contributors, edits are made without explanations on the Talk Page and my attempts were seen as an act of vandalism. So I did my homework on how to settle a dispute and filed for mediation - one Wikipedia way to solve disputes.

Mediation ensued and in the process, our mediator kindly introduced me to the Wikipedia way of things: cite credible sources, avoid using words that cast bias on an article, and one I figured out on my own - personal feelings are best left in blogs (blogs are not credible sources). As a result, it took seven weeks of daily discussions and debates to turn the entry around, from tabloid to fairly decent encyclopedic entry.

But here we are almost a year after cleaning up the EN article through mediation and we’re almost back where we started. Our mediator, Jbolden1517, abruptly left Wikipedia due to personal reasons and we reached somewhat of a… stalemate with fellow contributors. The following months, life, family and work took precedence over safeguarding the Every Nation entry and as a result, the entry has since been refilled with biased contributions.

With only two mediation coordinators available these days, I wonder now where does one go for help with settling disputes. And with the recent Wikipedia scandal, I can’t help feel somewhat… uneasy, or wary, about Wikipedia period. A contributor named Essjay admitted to lying about who he was, which wouldn’t be a problem, technically, except that he used his fake credentials to throw weight in mediating cases.

You can read more details of this in Andrew Lih’s blog and follow up post. Andrew is actually a Wikipedian himself who uses the name Fuzheado, a fact he discloses on his blog. Which is the direction that Wikipedia says it will now take - identity disclosure if credentials will be claimed.

I have no problem with that. And I will continue to be involved with Wikipedia - by way of patrolling the Every Nation entry and making whatever contributions I may be capable of making. And though it might not always be pleasant, it’s necessary. Sigh. I’ll just think of it as a daily trip to the dentist. In between living a fulfilled life, enjoying the company of family and friends, loving my job…
