One Bad Day!

April 26, 2007 - I hate this day. I really hate it. The day came in fiery, literally. My aunt’s home got burned to ashes. They were unable to salvage anything - even their clothes. They were asleep so by the time they woke up the ceiling was on fire!!!! They are left homeless, as of [...]

Guy Guide 101: For girls FAT = UGLY

Posted by Pinoy Guy Guide on Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 @ 10:53 pm in Lifestyle.

Saying to a girl that she's "FAT" is simply the worst and most cruel thing you could ever say to her. And that's a FACT since for them FAT = UGLY!

Given that women are 24/7 calorie-alert (yes, that's how anorexic they can be), they simply couldn't accept someone, especially if it is a guy teasing her that she's fat. This is what I've learned after hearing a fellow guy throw a joke at a friend telling her that she's getting fat. The girl just couldn't accept it that she almost cried. You see, women try very hard to get in shape because they know that their body is their most important asset that we guys ran after.

So next time, even if you're just being honest - make sure you know the consequence of telling a girl that she's fat. After all FAT is definitely equal to UGLY - well at least, for them. LOL. It's sad, but true.

Madame Malaprop

funny notice

The stark ridiculousness of the sign above (found at Nakanampucha!) reminded me of Melanie Marquez’s malapropisms. I was prompted to scour for her unforgettable bloopers, and here are what I found online.

Here are my top five:

5. “Ang tatay ko ang only living legend na buhay!”

4. “I don’t eat meat. I’m not a carnival.”

3. “Hindi si Joey ang tipong mambubugbog ng babae… talaga lang malapit sya sa mga gulo… PRO-ACCIDENT kasi sya eh…”

2. “You can fool me once, you can even fool me twice, you can even fool me thrice. But you can never fool me four!”

For number 1, I can’t decide between this:

(while waiting backstage during a noontime show, after watching Nikki Valdez do her dance number) “Nikki, you’re so galing(good). You should go to the States. You will sell hotcakes!”

and this:

“Don’t judge my brother; he’s not a book.”

There’s more:

  • “I won’t stoop down to my level!”
  • “We are lovers, not fighters.”
  • “My brother is not a girl; he’s a gentleman.”
  • “Kapatid ko pa rin siya. We are one and the same.”
  • “That’s why I’m a success, it’s because I don’t MIDDLE in other people’s lives.”
  • (when asked for a message to her daughter who was allegedly abused by their houseboy) “Don’t worry little angel, big angel is here.
  • “(on what they should do to the houseboy who molested her kid) “He should be put behind bar!”
  • ATE LUDS: “Paano ka nag-susurvive sa mga trials mo?”"Alam mo Ate Ludz, you know, when you are alone, you really have to istep your foot…ah, forward!”
  • Eddie Mercado: “Angie Dickinson has insured her legs for a million dollars, would you also do the same?” Melanie: “No, of course no, because I am proud and contented with my long-legged.” With this answer, she bagged the crown and eventually won the Miss International in 1978.
  • (at a talk show after her break-up with Derek Dee, Melanie was asked if she had some words for Derek’s mother, whom she partly blamed for the separation) “Oo nga,” said Melanie, “pero i-English-in ko para maintindihan niya.” She looked into the camera and, with the peremptoriness of royalty, said, “And to you, Mrs. Dee, I have two words for you. ANG LABO MO!”
  • “Period na talaga; wala nang exclamation point.” (when asked on S-Files if her present husband, Adam Lawyer, is her Mr. Right)
  • “Sumasakit ang migraine ko.”
  • “Eto na po ang pinakamaligayang pasko at manigong taon sa inyong lahat.” (during her acceptance speech at a Metro Filmfest awards night where her bioflick, directed by her late father Temyong Marquez, won an award)
  • “Bakit ang dami mong tanong? You’re so questionable.”
  • “Yung STD, baka sa maruming toilet lang niya nakuha yan.”
  • “Hindi ba kayo naaawa sa kapatid ko… sa mga kwento nya? Di ba kayo na-persuade ng mga kinwento nya?”
  • “Hello? Bulag ka ba? Bingi ka ba? Are you DEP?”
  • On an interview after giving birth, “my answers have been prayered.”
  • On the lovelife of her brother Joey and Kris, ” they should talk behind the scene.”

FF: Legend of the Crystals

Posted by HyukTa.net on Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 @ 2:19 pm in Personal - Philippines.

I planned on downloading Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals, but when I checked AniDB.net I changed my mind. *lol* Most Squaresoft (they were Squaresoft at the time of the FF OAV) games are good. Their movies or animation are disappointing.

Proper blog post, replies to comments and friends’ LJ posts will be done later. I must get back to burning and watching Tokko.

Just when we need journalists like David

Mr. David Halberstam, you will be sorely missed.

David Halberstam, Pulitzer-Winning Reporter, Killed
By Ryan Flinn and Dan Reichl (Bloomberg)

David Halberstam, a journalist- historian whose reporting on the Vietnam War won a Pulitzer Prize, died in a car crash. He was 73.

He was killed yesterday when three vehicles collided in an intersection in Menlo Park, California, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. He was a passenger in a car driven by a journalism student that was broad-sided. Halberstam was wearing a seat belt, the San Jose Mercury News reported today, citing Harold Schapelhouman, chief of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.

Halberstam chronicled the latter half of the 20th century, from darker moments, such as racism in the U.S. South during the civil-rights movement, to lighter fare, including lifelong friendships among aging baseball icons. He wrote 21 books over four decades after working for the New York Times.

"The world lost a wonderful man and a great journalist,'' New York Times Co. Chairman and Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said today at the company's annual meeting in New York. "David, you will be sorely missed.''

There is a site on the net that mocks Wikipedia named UncyclopediA and it can be edited by people that registers to their site. So far, they have this on:

Gloring Macapal-Arroyo (also known as P-GMHey, Mrs. Jose Pidal, GMA, Tuta ng Kano, Ewok and Dwarf, ) (born April 5, 1947) is the current Furher and 14th president of the Philippines. She is the country's second female president after Kurakot Akilobut she is still the shortest President (Rumor has it, that the only reason people stand up during her speeches is because she is too short to be seen). She is the son of former President Dios-daddy Macapal before she had Sex Change Surgery, according to medical reports, her surgeon was drunk with vodka and took also most of height think it was the thing....

She is being identifed as "the mole" because of her mole in her left cheek and the shortest president in the world. She is currently tutoring George W. Bush on how to stay in office despite the politcally and complextion damaging social/political issues. She is currently teaching him under the presidential table to avoid the media.

On the side under the heading Gloring Macapal-Ayoko complete with a manipulated likeness animation of GMA:

Order 14th President of the Philippines
(4th President of the 5th Republic)
(1st Fuhrer of the 6th
Republic aka Banana Republic)

Term of office January 20, 2001
xxxxxx xx, xxxx

Vice President Tio-fist Gingula

(2001–2004)
Boli de Broadcastro
(2004–present)

Predecessor Josef "Sherap" Espada

Successor Gloria Macapagal v2

Hmmmmn, what do you think? Go to their site and check it out...... if that's any indication of how she is perceived and a measure of her unpopularity in what people post on that site then she is beyond political redemption.

Filipino Signs of Wit

FILIPINO SIGNS OF WIT
Nury Vittachi - The Far Eastern Economic Review

This week, we shall take a “reading tour” of one of the most spirited communities in Asia. The Philippines is full of word play. The local accent among many Filipinos, in which English words with “F” are spelled and pronounced with the sound of “P” and V is pronounced as “B” (because the Philippine alphabet has no letters F or V), is often used very cleverly, such as, the sign in a flower shop in Diliman called Petal Attraction.

Much of the word play in the Philippines is deliberate with retailers and various businesses favoring a play on names of Western establishments and celebrities (Americans, in particular—movie stars and entertainment personalities, especially).

For example, there is a bread shop in Manila called Anita Bakery, a 24-hour restaurant called Doris Day and Night, a garment shop called Elizabeth Tailoring, and a barber shop called Felix The Cut.

Reader Robert Harland also spotted a bakery named Bread Pitt, and a Makati fast-food place selling “maruya” (banana fritters) called Maruya Carey. Then, there are Christopher Plumbing, and a boutique called The Way We Wear ; a video rental shop called Leon King Video Rental; a restaurant in the Cainta district of Rizal called Caintacky Fried Chicken, a local burger restaurant called Mang Donald’s, a doughnut shop called MacDonuts , a shop selling “lumpia” (egg roll) in Makati called Wrap and Roll, and two butcher shops called Meating Place and Meatropolis.

Man: Lord, why did you make woman so beautiful?

God: For you to love her.

Man: But why does she have to be so dumb?

God: For her to love you.

This is an old joke I got through text, and in Tagalog, but I was ‘inspired’ to post it here after reading another one like it at Marizen’s. :-)

Dead journalists? Repressed press? The attacks continue

Posted by Bryanton Post on Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 @ 11:19 am in Politics.

To those who have been following my Twitter posts lately, they know I've been terribly busy these days (since when did I stop becoming busy, my friends from PulpCommunity who have been egging me to join their swimming break on April 29 would say). I'm sure the frequent readers of this blog (if there are any) would notice how I have become slower in posting here. Plus, I'm out of Manila next week for a weeklong stay in Jakarta for the regionwide activities for this year's World Press Freedom Day. Sigh. I'm actually looking forward to it (visited Bali, but haven't gone to Jakarta), but half of me feels it is better for me to stay here, given the tons of work I'll be leaving here. Sure, I'm taking half of my work in Jakarta, but my Jakarta travel happens at a time when there's so much work in the office. Our interns at the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility can attest to this, I guess. (Note to myself: Have to convince Criz to help me convince our PulpComm friends that I won't be coming to the swimming-slash-reunion, even though half of my friends there would probably not understand and be angry at me for not going, even though the last time we met was ages ago.)

So here I am, just finished with that backbreaking discourse analysis of television news programs of the CMFR's third report of the news media elections coverage monitoring project. Wow. Even just writing that line makes me tired already.

But what makes me more disconcerted these days, however, is this latest stunt from Malacañang. The pattern of intimidating the media continues.

President Arroyo issues order further restricting access to information
Source: CMFR

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has issued an Executive Order (EO) that will restrict public and media access to official information. EO 608, issued on 20 April 2007, will create a National Security Clearance System that will "protect and ensure the integrity and sanctity" of classified information against "enemies of the state."

"It is the duty and responsibility of all government departments, agencies and offices to implement security measures that will protect and ensure the integrity and sanctity of classified or sensitive materials or information they have access to or in their possession," the EO said.

Heads of government agencies with access to classified matters are directed by EO 608 to implement and institutionalize the security clearance procedure approved by the office of National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales.

"Any unauthorized disclosure, sharing, publication or use of the information contained in the classified documents or materials shall be considered a grave offense and shall be punishable in accordance with civil service rules and regulations," the EO said.

Departments are also ordered to designate a security officer who will assume responsibility for holding classified information.

Read more here. Meanwhile, physical attacks against journalists continue. Another reporter gets killed. I think I should ask CMFR for a raise. Journalists in this country have become an endangered species. While the Philippines can claim it has the freest press in Asia on paper, the reality speaks otherwise. To borrow the words of CMFR deputy director Sir Louie, God bless all of us.

The Radio Series? Soon

Posted by Everywhere and Here on Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 @ 4:33 am in Personal - Philippines.

I’ve been tossing around more ideas on what I’d like to share on this here blog o’ mine and have decided to share what I’ve learned in radio.

Putting together a daily morning show; the finer points of conducting an interview; what to do when hosting gigs come in and you have to stand in front of a crowd of thousands, or twenty.

Kind of like a guide/how-to for anyone who’s interested.

I’ll most likely intersperse with non sequitur posts on jobs and on faith. Which I’ve already been doing. Hmmm. I guess it’s the other way around then… The Radio Series will interrupt my… musings.

Not that I’m an expert in said field… or anything for that matter. But fourteen years and different formats - pop, jazz, alternative, and talk - did teach me some things that hopefully someone else might learn from.

Of course, this could all just be a ruse to get myself back in the game.

Nah.

At least not now.

Arrest Gonzales, Abalos & the rest of the 07 Election Jokers!

Posted by Pedestrian Observer on Wednesday, April 25th, 2007 @ 1:50 am in Politics.

In an Inquirer breaking news Comelec Regional Director Renato Magbutay was quoted as saying:

The giving of money is prohibited in the campaign period especially by candidates to officials or supporters. That is considered vote-buying," Comelec Regional Director Renato Magbutay said in a telephone interview.

Magbutay said, however, that the poll body cannot act to determine if Gonzalez violated any election law if there is no formal complaint and no witness comes forward to execute an affidavit.

Magbutay pointed out that while Gonzalez is not a candidate, his son and namesake Raul Gonzalez Jr. is running for re-election as congressman of the city.

What a joke a cruel one at that and here I am so elated at the news that Comelec is now seriously doing their job with such “bold” statement only to take it back like a yoyo. Boy was I wrong. What is this guy thinking or what’s the point of yakity yak in the press when he can’t even back up his stand on the illegality of the injustice secretary’s OFFER?

Is he joking or is he a joker is an apt question on this untouchable constitutional body making a mockery of the people’s right to choose as if all this exercise is just a game. A game of fools I might say where the people are played by players of the inutile and incompetent ones.

Por dios por santo que barbaridad the provision is very clear and any which way you look at it points to the culpability of Gonzales, to quote:

Section 261 of the Omnibus Election Code states that a person is guilty of vote-buying or vote-selling if the person "gives, offers or promises money or anything of value, gives or promises any office or employment, franchise or grant, public or private, or makes or offers to make an expenditure, directly or indirectly, or cause an expenditure to be made to any person, association, corporation, entity, or community in order to induce anyone or the public in general to vote for or against any candidate or withhold his vote in the election, or to vote for or against any aspirant for the nomination or choice of a candidate in a convention or similar selection process of a political party."

P10K per burangay captain to be exact is the OFFER so in the depreciated peso of this (appreciated peso daw according to the lady who cheats errr seats by the murky Pasig River) Cheating Republic it’s probably worthless, the “OFFER OF VALUE” therefore does not count? Any right thinking individual will see this clearly and why are we not doing something about this brazen arrogance abusing their cheat errr seat of office, idiotizing (to borrow Mr. take no prisoner Abaya’s term) the people in the process?

How about Abalos proudly announcing in printed madaya errr media his big brother’s accomplishment and seeing “nothing” wrong in his "nomination" as the tricycle drivers “advocate” is just pathetic. How about Borra did you not say you will prosecute those announcing the names of the nominees? Shame on these people the “violation” is right under their very noses and they seem to get blinded by their arrogance. Arrest Abalos Borra, or is this just another hollow stance of grandstanding like a clown act in a Comelect that's more like a circus? How about the fixers are you also waiting for some "witness" to come out before you conduct an investigation? Heck who in the name of kurdapya will volunteer to be a witness? After seeing what happened to Acsa Ramirez a witness turned suspect by no less than the cheat errr chief of state, do they think people will be that motivated to come out? Oh, yeah besides they are so busy in this election so what's the rush, they are soooo "overworked", we may be be expecting too much.

Just in case Borra is true to his word that is if they even have a clue what they are bragging about he should order the arrest of Dante Ang too the godfather of the Confederation of Mothers with his dear baby boy Klink as the nominee.

Going back to the callous injustice secretary herewith is his incriminating interview over the phone:

Justice Secretary Gonzalez has offered P10,000 to each of the 180 village captains of Iloilo City or a total of P1.8 million if all TEAM Unity candidates win in their villages.

Gonzalez, a staunch ally of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, confirmed that he made the offer during a meeting with the village captains in a restaurant here last Sunday.

"It's a prize if they will work for the sweep," Gonzalez told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a telephone interview.

So is he telling us that Section 261does not apply in his case and in the absence of the act of giving, he can announce to the whole world his offer and suffer no consequence for it? The law specifically stated OFFER so what’s the deal, what are the math geniuses waiting for? Now I know when this guy goes into private practice not to use or recommend the man he seems to have some comprehension problem in interpreting the meaning of OFFER which he says is a “PRIZE” hesumalosep no matter how you twist it, that is still a violation. So what are the people paying them for if they can’t even arrest blatant transgression of this magnitude? Or is it because as some some numb nut would say, someone needs to execute an affidavit. Well guess what, diligent authorities will not wait like Juan Tanga errrr Tamad for the fruit to fall but order police agencies to investigate and seek out witnesses to build a case. Duh, getting dumber and dumber, let's get rid of these people …… vote them out of office. Hit them where it hurts the most don’t let any of the administratong backed local candidates win. Let’s look for local leaders of integrity support the likes of Fr. Ed Panlilio, Martin Bautista, Zosimo Paredes, Adrian Sison and seek out those who will bring back sanity in our political office.
