I was able to watch some NBA playoff action earlier today and I’m quite surprised (and disappointed) to see Miami fall into a 0-3 hole against Chicago. I mean… it was terrible enough watching the Heat lose 2 straight games in Chicago, but I thought, “Hey, they’ll surely make up for it once they get back home…”. They didn’t!
Well, I guess the defending champs are done with. Regardless if they win games 3 and 4, chances are they won’t advance to the next round given the consistent trend of NBA teams that try to comeback from a 0-3 deficit.
What a bummer!

A year ago I wrote: "Hey, I am new here! In fact I am groping blindly (as in literally) around the site. I am not sure what I am going to write on my blog and how to go about it. But it does not matter anyhow because I am excited, and learning can be a lot of fun. This lady here is trying to enter into the blog scene!" Didn't notice it's already been a year since then. It just started raining in Manila today. This for us is the foreboding of the end of summer in the Philippines. Which is good and bad for us city-dwellers.
The good thing is that the heat is slowly losing its grip on our islands. Slowly, I stress. It ain't over yet.
The bad thing is that with rain comes horrific traffic, and for those of us who commute, the possibility of falling/tripping on an open manhole. Yes, we have those here. This and the getting drenched by cars, jeepneys, or buses that drive by and splash water on pedestrians, albeit unintentionally. Sometimes.
So before the summer ends, I just gotta post these two pictures of my regulation commuting attire. And ask the question, why don't Filipinos do the same instead of getting office clothes wet from sweat?
I find it vaguely amusing when people at work comment on my choice of clothing for my commute to the office in 34 degree Celsius heat - "You're so American!"
In my head, I'm thinking it's not so much an American thing but more of a practical solution slash common sense thing to want to be comfortable when walking to the jeepney stops, the tricycle stands, the bus stops, the pedicab rides, and whatever ride that needs getting to.
At least this way, my requisite office uniform isn't sweaty when I get to work. One stop at the restroom to change and I'm all... fresh and clean.
What's so foreign about that?
So now that the rainy season is starting to assert itself, there is no way that I'm not coming to work in anything but my regulation commuting attire - t-shirt and trainers. Okay, maybe I'll get rain boots...
Steps walked so far since my walking obsession began? 163,725.
*these feet were made for walkin'... what else can i do...?*

I stumbled upon this some time ago on the TIG page and bookmarked it for when I would have time to put it up.
In case you want one too, visit xantus.vox.com and/or click on this post. Directions are there. But in a nutshell, you need to make sure that on your Profile page in your Account Settings, you have checked the box at the bottom that asks if you want to sign up as a Beta Tester.
And since I'm sooooo jealous of all the VOX-ers who have the little 'I was a VOX Beta Tester' banner, I signed up!
I'm not sure how, or if you can keep the site counter in one place on the side bar but I know for sure it gets the job done...
Thank you, galavantiator, for asking! You beat me to it. =)

I remember vividly how a a young local actress mentioned on TV over a year ago how this certain makeup can make her skin beautiful. She also said that she can actually sleep in it and it can even improve the health of her skin! I readily dismissed her words as BS. I mean it's a known fact, makeup ruins ones skin especially if you sleep in it . It has chemicals. Period. Plus I must admit, for as long as i can remember, i was under the impression that Joey de Leon got his "crater face" because he wears makeup a lot on TV: klieg lights + chemical makeup = disaster skin! (thanks to Manila urban legends)
A few months ago, i read from a U.P sis' blog how she adores mineral makeups. I must say that that blog started my further researches (alright obsession..teehee) on mineral makeup. What convinced me to buy was the hypoallergenic and mineral-from-the-earth factor. During that time, my baby was having skin rashes, so I stopped wearing anything on my face to elimininate probable allergens that could be causing the flare-ups. Ii even refused to use a toner!
My first order of mineral makeup sample from Everyday Minerals was followed by more online orders from 5 other mineral makeup companies abroad! hehehe. I don't know... for some reason, after receiving my first sample of everyday minerals, oh my joshhartnett... I instantly got hooked! In fact, I have already received my sample orders from the following sites (they charge from US$4-8): Elegant Minerals, Lumiere Cosmetics, Signature Minerals, Ocean Mist Cosmetics, and Lauress Cosmetics.
Yes, I am cheap such a makeup connoisseur! (It's the girly-girl dainty-dainty side of me getting unleashed..hehe)
Sometimes, the waiting can be excruciatingly painful (teehee), Everyday Minerals took forever to arrive, while with Ocean Mist Cosmetics, i got the product within the week. Some companies ship the items directly, while some will require you to claim the package from the post office.
Among the brands mentioned, i must say that I equally love Everyday Minerals, Signature Minerals, and Lauress Cosmetics! But with all the mineral makeup free sample pots that I hoarded still have on hand, it's not yet the best time for me to purchase new mineral makeups. From experience, a couple of good brands that have been sitting on my vanity dresser have expired already, Clinique, MAC, VMV, Aido (hehe), The Body Shop, Max Factor, Maybelline, in2it, Revlon, Red Earth, Avon, Shu Uemura, L'oreal, Cinema Secrets- name it, i think i have at least one from each brand. I buy, but if i didn't like the "feel" of the makeup on my skin after a couple of usage, i usually stop using it and i will be off to the next brand (it was a vicious cycle)
So with MMU, I must say those teeny weeny mineral makeup pots are really made for me! I don't think they will expire before i get to finish them! (prolly, i might order sooner than i think!) I will never go back to using regular makeup.
SO anyway, since i started using mineral mkaeup, i started getting nice comments from friends:
"Kaya pala parang palaging fresh-looking ang face mo!", "Parang wala kang skin pores!", "You look blooming!" (friends, thank youuuu)
And when i told them i've been using mineral makeup, they followed the wagon.
Now what is mineral makeup actually made of and what does it do to your skin? (pardon me if i'm sounding like a sales agent..teehee..i can go on and on raving about MMU..)
Companies say the products heal skin, provide natural sunblock, last longer than ordinary makeup and are so safe they can even be used in the sensitive days after plastic surgery. And as if that is not enough, the mineral mélanges are promoted as water resistant, responsible for giving the skin a glowy, silky look and good for women with oily or dry skin.
Mineral makeup is made from naturally occurring minerals, including zinc oxide; ultramarine, which is derived from lapis lazuli; and titanium dioxide. These are mined from the earth and ground into fine powder. They are touted as hypoallergenic and they naturally nourish the skin. They contain no perfumes, talc, alcohol, dyes, mineral oil or preservatives (Thus, making it comedogenic, won't clog pores). Normally only foundation is made from pure minerals. Some eye shadows and lipsticks sold by mineral makeup companies contain fillers, binders dyes or blends which can cause skin problems.
FYI, the best-selling mineral make-up is Bare Escentuals ( click also here) being one of mineral makeup pioneers. The owner also founded Urban Decay ( i did my homework well, I did a lot of reading on mineral makeup).
Madonna on the other hand swears by Jane Iredale dubbed as the "runway" makeup, probably one of the most glamorous makeups. I find it too designer-ish, you know, nice packaging (undeniably classy), nice promotion/advertisement- steep price.
So, what will be my next stash? Bare Escentuals and Urban Decay.. and maybe next time, Jane Iredale!
I've had enough of sample packs :P
-------------------
You can order bare escentuals make-up from me, very reasonably priced. If you will buy from SEPHORA, shipping it will turn out to be more expensive! :)

Pinays (and some Pinoys, actually) - BEWARE. There’s going to be competition. Over Bruce Quebral, that is. Filipino hunk and house mate at the second season of the Pinoy Big Brother reality series, Bruce was sent to Slovenia in exchange for Tina Semolic, for a week’s cross-cultural immersion, and had won the hearts of viewers, particularly women, of the Slovenian counterpart.
A comment on the Slovenian website says:
“Many mothers would want him to be their son-in-law.”
The show never got me interested earlier, not until I read about the swap at Tingting’s blog and by chance got to see an episode while having dinner with my family. Too bad I only saw too little, too late. It was the second show prior to their goodbyes. They’re on their way back to each other’s homes as of writing.
What did I find interesting about it? Brief it may be, it gave a slight but engaging study of contrasts between these two cultures. It had me looking for Slovenia in Wikipedia, as did with a lot of Filipinos I am positively sure.
Big Brother on the other end may have chosen Bruce over his other house mates purely for his exotic looks. This former Mr. Philippines’ brown and brawny features made for eye candy to compete with the Slovenian hunks. But he seems to have delivered more than what was expected of him. In the few video clips shown on their web page, and on PBB, Bruce proved to be sensitive, gentle and compassionate with the ladies, while humble and considerate with the guys. He cooked them adobo and taught them tinikling. There are comments that the other men had been aloof with him, and I did notice he seemed to have bonded more with the women. It must be the language barrier, among other things. And yes, he was competition, after all. We can’t know for sure how he measured up to them and to other Slovenian male viewers. It seems that most of those actively involved in the forums are female.
At our end, too, Tina was well received. She was made Reyna Elena, taught to twirl the baton (not THAT, you guys. Hehe!) and treated to anything and everything with a hint of Philippine fiesta. I cannot be sure whether she was enjoying, she seemed to have had a hard time adapting to the heat. But she was sweet, adaptive and game, and noticeably appreciative of the hospitality.
If anything, this gimmick got viewers from both parts of the globe connected and may have easily forged optimistic images about each other. Hopefully so. It can’t be all bad news about the Philippines, right?

The stark ridiculousness of the sign above (found at Nakanampucha!) reminded me of Melanie Marquez’s malapropisms. I was prompted to scour for her unforgettable bloopers, and here are what I found online.
Here are my top five:
5. “Ang tatay ko ang only living legend na buhay!”
4. “I don’t eat meat. I’m not a carnival.”
3. “Hindi si Joey ang tipong mambubugbog ng babae… talaga lang malapit sya sa mga gulo… PRO-ACCIDENT kasi sya eh…”
2. “You can fool me once, you can even fool me twice, you can even fool me thrice. But you can never fool me four!”
For number 1, I can’t decide between this:
(while waiting backstage during a noontime show, after watching Nikki Valdez do her dance number) “Nikki, you’re so galing(good). You should go to the States. You will sell hotcakes!”
and this:
“Don’t judge my brother; he’s not a book.”
There’s more:
- “I won’t stoop down to my level!”
- “We are lovers, not fighters.”
- “My brother is not a girl; he’s a gentleman.”
- “Kapatid ko pa rin siya. We are one and the same.”
- “That’s why I’m a success, it’s because I don’t MIDDLE in other people’s lives.”
- (when asked for a message to her daughter who was allegedly abused by their houseboy) “Don’t worry little angel, big angel is here.
- “(on what they should do to the houseboy who molested her kid) “He should be put behind bar!”
- ATE LUDS: “Paano ka nag-susurvive sa mga trials mo?”"Alam mo Ate Ludz, you know, when you are alone, you really have to istep your foot…ah, forward!”
- Eddie Mercado: “Angie Dickinson has insured her legs for a million dollars, would you also do the same?” Melanie: “No, of course no, because I am proud and contented with my long-legged.” With this answer, she bagged the crown and eventually won the Miss International in 1978.
- (at a talk show after her break-up with Derek Dee, Melanie was asked if she had some words for Derek’s mother, whom she partly blamed for the separation) “Oo nga,” said Melanie, “pero i-English-in ko para maintindihan niya.” She looked into the camera and, with the peremptoriness of royalty, said, “And to you, Mrs. Dee, I have two words for you. ANG LABO MO!”
- “Period na talaga; wala nang exclamation point.” (when asked on S-Files if her present husband, Adam Lawyer, is her Mr. Right)
- “Sumasakit ang migraine ko.”
- “Eto na po ang pinakamaligayang pasko at manigong taon sa inyong lahat.” (during her acceptance speech at a Metro Filmfest awards night where her bioflick, directed by her late father Temyong Marquez, won an award)
- “Bakit ang dami mong tanong? You’re so questionable.”
- “Yung STD, baka sa maruming toilet lang niya nakuha yan.”
- “Hindi ba kayo naaawa sa kapatid ko… sa mga kwento nya? Di ba kayo na-persuade ng mga kinwento nya?”
- “Hello? Bulag ka ba? Bingi ka ba? Are you DEP?”
- On an interview after giving birth, “my answers have been prayered.”
- On the lovelife of her brother Joey and Kris, ” they should talk behind the scene.”

He was killed yesterday when three vehicles collided in an intersection in Menlo Park, California, about 30 miles south of San Francisco. He was a passenger in a car driven by a journalism student that was broad-sided. Halberstam was wearing a seat belt, the San Jose Mercury News reported today, citing Harold Schapelhouman, chief of the Menlo Park Fire Protection District.
Halberstam chronicled the latter half of the 20th century, from darker moments, such as racism in the U.S. South during the civil-rights movement, to lighter fare, including lifelong friendships among aging baseball icons. He wrote 21 books over four decades after working for the New York Times.
"The world lost a wonderful man and a great journalist,'' New York Times Co. Chairman and Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said today at the company's annual meeting in New York. "David, you will be sorely missed.''

FILIPINO SIGNS OF WIT
Nury Vittachi - The Far Eastern Economic Review
This week, we shall take a “reading tour” of one of the most spirited communities in Asia. The Philippines is full of word play. The local accent among many Filipinos, in which English words with “F” are spelled and pronounced with the sound of “P” and V is pronounced as “B” (because the Philippine alphabet has no letters F or V), is often used very cleverly, such as, the sign in a flower shop in Diliman called Petal Attraction.
Much of the word play in the Philippines is deliberate with retailers and various businesses favoring a play on names of Western establishments and celebrities (Americans, in particular—movie stars and entertainment personalities, especially).
For example, there is a bread shop in Manila called Anita Bakery, a 24-hour restaurant called Doris Day and Night, a garment shop called Elizabeth Tailoring, and a barber shop called Felix The Cut.
Reader Robert Harland also spotted a bakery named Bread Pitt, and a Makati fast-food place selling “maruya” (banana fritters) called Maruya Carey. Then, there are Christopher Plumbing, and a boutique called The Way We Wear ; a video rental shop called Leon King Video Rental; a restaurant in the Cainta district of Rizal called Caintacky Fried Chicken, a local burger restaurant called Mang Donald’s, a doughnut shop called MacDonuts , a shop selling “lumpia” (egg roll) in Makati called Wrap and Roll, and two butcher shops called Meating Place and Meatropolis.
