13 Tips For Making Powerpoint Slide Presentations

Moonlighting as an ER physician, I sometimes get invited to attend nursing students’ learning conferences when not busy in ER duty. One of the things I noticed during those presentations is that students are not really sure about they should go about their cases. With the voluminous material on medicine and nursing topics, it overwhelms them that in an effort to cover everything they think are of “essence”, they cramp all of their research materials (everything they have photocopied) into one sloppy case report. It’s piteous that they have to be lectured about slide presentation making even before finishing their reports. But it was a necessity so as they’d know how to properly make slides for an effective presentation. I think my colleague and I have been gentle about it, remember the hell we went through for it when we were still in medical school. These kids are just lucky.

This post was also inspired by an entry of Doctor Anonymous about his boring board review day. May we not encounter slide presentations/presentors/lecturers like that which he described. Hehe.

Mind you, the following are not tips lifted from academic books. Rather, these are but practical guidelines based on my experiences in presenting for conferences and reports during medical school and internship.

  1. Clearly state the title and the objectives of your presentation. And, of course, your name. It is wise to state the covered topics of your lecture/report so as to focus their minds on those areas you wish to tackle. Also, it would be common courtesy to tell your audience who they’re going to listen to. Don’t recite your entire curriculum vitae just to prove your right to discuss such topics. Make it simple.
  2. Do not heap unnecessary words and graphics on your slide. Have bullet points to emphasize important phrases.
  3. Do not use irritating sound effects like typewriter and speeding car sounds. Newbies to PP presentation are often guilty of this. It may be useful on certain occasions but it would be better to make it an exception rather than the rule. It is not useful for academic presentations.
  4. Do not display the words in your slide presentation letter by letter. It’s not how we normally read words anyway. We read and recognize words by groups of letters, not one letter at a time.
  5. Limit the contents of your slide into 6-8 short lines of text, preferably bullet-numbered. If you need to present a quoted text and it’s way too lengthy, place this in a separate slide. You can always link back to the main presentation.
  6. It would be better to use dark backgrounds for slides and bright colors like yellow or white for fonts. This is the best contrast for easy ready, especially when lights are dimmed inside the conference room.
  7. Use easy to read font-styles like Arial, Verdana, Tahoma, and Times New Roman. Use appropriate font-sizes so that even those at the last row can read your slides. Don’t be tempted to use every font-type available in your computer in your presentation just to give an idea of “variety”.
  8. Do not use MS Word for presentation! I have encountered this in a case conference of nursing students. Apparentl, they have divided making of presentation among themselves and someone lost his copy of his presentation. As a “remedy”, he opened *.doc files containing his research materials and used it as his visual aid for presentation (which definitely did not aid us at all). Don’t do this! If ever you’ll be stuck with using MS Word for presentation (because your MS PP crashed or accidentally got “erased” from your disks), use large font-sizes. Do not let your audience read paragraphs of texts!
  9. You are allowed to glance at your visual aid but do not read your entire presentation from it. It will decrease your credibility. Who would believe a speaker who cannot even discuss naturally his area of specialty?
  10. Cite your main sources for the presentation. It will lend credibility to it. You can also mention your sources for the images/diagrams used as this will aid your audience when reviewing your presentation afterwards.
  11. Use exclamation points sparingly. It is irritating to see lots of exclamation points one after the other. One punctuation mark is enough. I’ve seen this done before and he used it just to prove the point as important. It is unnecessary, actually.
  12. Keep your slides at the minimum. If you’ve to use plenty of slides, use some nice break slides in between topics.
  13. Clearly make a slide that indicates that it’s the end of your presentation. This may only be more of an aesthetic rather than a necessity. But, really, it will definitely be a plus point for your presentation. I mean, you should end properly what you’ve started properly, right?

What’s hot according to Google

Posted by Top Dog on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 @ 10:51 am in Personal - Philippines.

Today (at least I just discovered it today), Google launched a new service called Hot Trends, which is a part of Google Trends.

It basically lists down the top 100 searches for a certain day. However, it does not list down the top searches per se. According to Google Blog,
Hot Trends aren't the search terms people look for most often -- those are pretty predictable, like [weather] or [games] or perhaps [myspace]. Yes, [sex] too. Instead, the Hot Trends algorithm analyzes millions of searches to find those that are deviating the most relative to their past traffic. And the outcome is the Hot Trends list.
I'm not really sure if this will benefit a lot of users, but hey, it's a pretty nifty service.

Being in the know is hot these days.

Or probably not. I'm not really a regular hip-shaking party person, but more of a beach bum. However I really like to drink and have fun with my friends.

Magbalik by Callalily: PGG’s Music of the Moment

I know this is a bit late but hey they're still the one of the hottest bands around. I'm talking about Callalily, the OPM band which sang "Stars". I'm featuring their current single Magbalik as Pinoy Guy Guide's Music of the Moment. What I like about the band is that they started out young. I believe most of them are studying in UST and are in their sophomore year in college. Their ages are

Dream Vacation… Part 2

Posted by Must Be That Girl! on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 @ 6:36 am in Personal - Philippines.

The Plantation Bay (Mactan, Cebu, Philippines)
If you are still on a lookout for dream destinations, come and take a look at this place. I originally promised not to write about popular tourist destinations in Cebu, because I guess everyone who has a Cebu blog is promoting them. I wanted to have a blog that goes beyond the the most common tourism topics. Thus, chronicles of an ordinary Cebu life was born... But the Cebuana in me could not help it. So forgive me, if I will shamelessly promote the place... Now, be honest and tell me if you would rather not be here in this beach than anywhere else in the world?
Actually the highlight of this beautiful resort is a man-made lagoon. Villas with dreamy rooms like this one here below, are built sorrounding the lagoon. If you wake up in the morning and decide to take a dip, the warm water is just a few steps away...
Hmmm... if this pampering is not paradise, then maybe it must be heaven?
The best time to come is during summer between March until the month of May. But just be warned that it can really be HO...T! during this time of the year. Nevertheless, it is worth it. Photos Courtesy of: Plantation Bay

Game Show Mo ‘To!

Posted by A Day In The Life... on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007 @ 1:16 am in Miscellaneous.

Finally, I am able to unveil the theme song of the newest game show of QTV Channel 11!

The title of the one-hour program is “Game Show Mo ‘To” which will air twice a week (Fridays and Saturdays) on the 10:30am slot (still to be confirmed).  No date has been decided yet as to when the pilot episode will air.  But it looks like it’ll be late May or early June.

The title of the composition is “Appear Disappear (Game Show Mo ‘To)”.

Why Appear Disappear?

Well, it’s because the mechanics of the game involve the terms: “Appear”, “Disappear”, “One Half”, “One Fourth”.  Not necessarily the old hand slapping game which most pinoy kids used to play.  But nevertheless based from that.

The Baywalk Bodies will be releasing the same song as the the carrier single for their next album.  The difference between the game show version and the album version are the slightly modified lyrics in the chorus.  The album version won’t have the “Game Show Mo ‘To” tag included in the chorus and will be replaced with a different line.

Anyhow, as promised… my bloggies will be the first ones to listen to the composition.  This was recorded, mixed and mastered at my recording studio.  Musical arrangement was done by me also.

I mentioned earlier that the song had a novelty-ish approach… but not too much of it.  I didn’t really want the music to sound too “temporary” (gets?)… so I gave it sort of a swing-ish beat which infuses a classic disco feel making it sound like a classic revival yet actually really isn’t.  I also opted out of the “simpleton” lyrics known to be a staple of today’s pinoy novelty tunes.

You’ll soon understand once you listen to it.  I hope you guys like it!  Lyrics are included also below…!  Comments are greatly appreciated.  Enjoy!

“APPEAR DISAPPEAR (GAME SHOW MO ‘TO)”
Composed by Chuckie Dreyfus
Performed by the “Baywalk Bodies”

(Tara na) Tara na… Huwag nang mahiya
(Tayo Na) Tayo na… Itodo mo na

Ba’t hindi mo samahan
Ng kembot ng iyong bewang
Umindak pa ng todo

CHORUS:
Appear Disappear 1/2 1/4
1/4 1/2 Disappear Appear!
O ayan… ulitin pa…
Appear Disappear 1/2 1/4
1/4 1/2 Disappear Appear!
O diba… Alam mo na…
Sige lang wag kang hihinto
Ginaganahan pa ako
Itodo mo lang… “Game Show Mo ‘To”!

(Mas exciting) Mas exciting ngang talaga
(Lalo pa) Lalo pa’t ika’y kalaro
(Parang ayoko) Parang ayoko nang huminto
