I adore Haraken *tee-hee*

Posted by HyukTa.net on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 11:05 pm in Personal - Philippines.

Connection’s being stupid again. If it weren’t for that short electrical problem. FUCK! XP I get Network Error (dns_server_failure) in most of the sites I visit. Included site is my LJ friends’ page. ARGH! At times like this, I I wish I could just subscribe my friends’ LJ in Google Reader. (It’s one of the few sites I could visit at the moment.) But I can’t because the majority of my friends set their posts to friends-only. _

It’s been raining since lunch time. I told Lez I would go to school, but I ended up not going. *lol* I planned on taking a short nap and leave around 1:30PM. I ended up waking up by 4:30PM. *lol* I don’t think it was a good idea to go out anyway. The rain was kind of strong. It would be hard to commute. I wanted to wear my new flats even. *sighs*

So far, I updated SASHIMI with a review of Dennou Coil ep. 8-9. If you haven’t seen that series yet, please go watch it. Another series I recommend is Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. ♥

They’re like family ♥ ^_^

New Tourism Industry Vocabulary

Posted by Ar-wee-der-yet on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 8:20 pm in Personal - Philippines.

If you don't know what "red-eye flight" and "missionary routes" mean, just look it up on Google. Here are some unique terms that will beef up your tourism lingo. The frequency that you will use these words in everyday life will determine how you love to travel.

arm restle
n. the ongoing battle waged with your seatmate over the middle armrest. Maneuvers include elbogartingrecline and conquer (capturing the armrest during feigned or actual sleep). (slow advance of the elbow to gain ground) and

flight dependent
n. neighboring passenger who, flying solo, turns to you in search of company/a drinking partner/a date.

gabbin pressure
n. sense of obligation to chat to the passenger next to you during a flight. ("I'm just recovering from gabbin pressure - I sat next to a real flight dependent.")

John the Laptist
n. the guy in front of you who reclines his seat until his head is in your lap.

mathzheimer's
n. the inability to calculate a foreign exchange rate without elaborate financial and/or tech support.

touron
n. tourist + moron. ("Don't even bother with the Louvre on a Saturday. It's overrun with tourons.")

travelanche
n. the state of affairs when one little thing goes wrong and then everything snowballs toward disaster. ("It started as a minor delay in Seattle and ended up a full-blown travelanche involving lost luggage, bad airport food, and dire intestinal consequences.")

U.S.O.
n. unidentified stained object; mysterious mark on hotel carpet or bedding. ("Alexis refuses to stay at subpar hotels due to her intense fear of U.S.O.'s.")

Hacking and Ethics

Posted by sweetperceptions on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 6:00 pm in Personal - Philippines.

I don't know why its been a buzz eversince the computing world began.  I think its because for every matter, there should be an anti-matter.. well, that for a fact still needs to be proven.  Let's just say, for every good, there is evil... but hacking isn't evil by itself.

We programmers get elated by our creation.  We enjoy making things out of plain ideas.  Seeing them come alive is the next best thing to being alive.  But, if you think about it, you cannot create something that you cannot undo, or destroy.  For every creation, there must be destruction too.. otherwise, there wouldn't be any end to anything at all that is being created.  Right?

TV news booboos

Posted by Bryanton Post on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 1:42 pm in Politics.

These clips are all over the Internet. Technical glitches or just plain incompetence?

Merry Miller, the novice reporter in the video below, was described in some blogs and websites as the world's worst celebrity interviewee ever. Tsk tsk. Here is the poor kid's infamous interview with actress Holly Hunter.

Miller's station, ABC explains what happened in this entry.

Just when you think Miller is the worst reporter ever, this site says, a local newscaster in Seattle named Connie Thompson makes Miller sound like the highly-respected news anchor Walter Cronkite. "Bless the person who took the time listening to hours upon hours of footage to compile a lengthy string of flubs from the easily confused reporter, who is probably sitting at home right now wondering if Donald Trump has just fired someone or if one of his building’s has burned down," the site said.

The much-maligned video:

Sorry but I can't help myself remembering that I posted here Michael Fajatin's report sometime ago. I still don't personally know Fajatin, but I am quite glad that at least I have never seen or heard him doing a similar report again.

Will Murdoch signal the end for The Wall Street Journal?

Posted by Bryanton Post on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 12:42 pm in Politics.

Oooh boy, did I speak too soon. I thought I am going to be pretty relaxed the next few days, but I thought wrong. Need to finish proofreading the election book and writing an article for PJR Reports. Aargh.

Meanwhile to keep me insane, here are three good reads from the Columbia Journalism Review on the controversial deal between media mogul Rupert Murdoch and Dow Jones & Company and its jewel, the highly-respected The Wall Street Journal.

The Scorpion and the Frog
CJR's editorial on the Murdoch offer

A familiar fable tells of a scorpion that asks a frog to carry him across a river. The frog is sensibly fearful of getting stung. But the scorpion is persuasive, pointing out that if he stings the frog, they will both sink into the water and die. Why would he do such a thing? So the frog agrees. Midway across the stream, the scorpion stings. The dying frog asks: Why? It's my nature, the scorpion explains.

For our purpose here the frog is the Bancroft family and the scorpion is the charming Rupert Murdoch, who would very much like to own the Bancrofts' shares in Dow Jones & Company and its jewel, The Wall Street Journal. Family members sensibly fear that he would misuse that paper's journalistic power. Murdoch's answer is that to damage the credibility of the Journal would be to destroy it. Why would he do such a thing?

You know the answer. For proof, you can read the wonderful 114-inch page-one piece in the June 5 Journal itself, which reported multiple examples all around the world demonstrating (again) that Murdoch's "newspapers and other media outlets have made coverage decisions that advanced the interest of his sprawling media conglomerate, News Corp."

Why the Dow Jones Vote Matters
Dean Starkman on the mission of The Wall Street Journal
NEW YORK -- Last Nov. 14, 38-year-old Martin A. Siegel, one of Wall Street's leading investment bankers, was spending the afternoon in the Park Avenue offices of Martin Lipton, an eminent takeover lawyer and a man Mr. Siegel had come to regard almost as a father.

Suddenly a federal marshal burst in upon the two men, thrusting a subpoena into Mr. Siegel's hand. When Mr. Siegel read the subject matter of the investigation—Ivan F. Boesky—and the accompanying list of his own takeover deals at Kidder, Peabody & Co. in the 1980s, he knew his career was over. He began sobbing, as a horrified Mr. Lipton rushed to comfort him. [1]

The Wall Street Journal leder. Has modern American newspapering produced anything better, or at least more elegant? The nation's leading financial daily has produced long-form narratives on its front page since Bernard Kilgore decided after World War II that the nation's business news was of interest to people other than the nation's businessmen and women, and that the interests of the nation's businessmen and women were broader than just business news.

Bending to Power
Murdoch historian Bruce Page on how Rupert built his empire, and how he uses it

“There might be other buyers more palatable to them. But who’s to say Rupert Murdoch is all that bad?”

Brian Rogers of T. Rowe Price, advising the Bancrofts to sell The Wall Street Journal.

The answer to this question depends on what you mean by bad—or good—and on who is a credible witness. Robert Thomson, editor of The Times of London, testifies for good. He says Rupert Murdoch’s control of The Times doesn’t distort its reporting, which is admirable if true. But Mr. Thomson is a Murdoch employee, and there’s some evidence that he is talking through his hat.

For Mr. Rogers, making money is generally “good,” but there are particulars in News Corp. that might trouble him. For instance, making money at newspapers like The Wall Street Journal is something Murdoch has been notably bad at. (The Times is a prime example.) We must estimate, since News Corp. doesn’t publish results for its individual titles. (There are about 175 of them, the best-known being the New York Post, in America; The Times, the Sunday Times, The Sun, and the News of the World, in Britain: The Australian, The Herald Sun, The Daily Telegraph, and The Mercury, in Australia). Media companies are often secretive, and News Corp. outstandingly so. If due diligence meant as much as Wall Street pretends it does, the Bancroft advisers would require disclosure before talking business.

Choose your “Spot”

For those of you who have read my blog entry about the Nintendo DS browser, thanks. For those who haven't yet, well, you'll understand this tidbit a bit better after reading it here.

Whichever the case, I am currently using my DS to check out the WiFi hotspots I come across. Not the best of equipment I agree, but it is portable as portable is concerned. I have been able to browse successfully at a few Globe BIZ hotspots. Including my first for the DS which was in Alabang. I thought I would try it with some other providers, fortunately, another was available since the Petron SLEX branch of Starbucks is equipped with Airborne Access.

Alas, the good news stopped there. Airborne Access it seems, is a bit picky on who accesses its network. Although, in all true fairness to the provider, it is very much possible that Starbucks itself has blocked the DS. I don't know how (yet). That I admit. Its just that its a different thing with what I have in school. The network just won't give me an IP address so I can browse. Maybe its a bug? Maybe. I am more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

There are a lot of shops that give free WiFi. Unfortunately, some of the more popular stops like Starbucks and Coffee Bean require the use of prepaid cards. Again, I have refrained from bringing my laptop to test these hotspots for a while. At least until my back recovers. But it seems like the HotSpot Quest is far from over.

Enkay’s Mp3/Video Player Giveaway

Posted by Kirbitz on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 10:42 am in Miscellaneous.

Ok, Its 12:06am. . Its our midterm week, Im exhausted for qutie a number of things-- I did a case presentation at school (which didnt go too well), i worked my butt off studying major subjects for a 6 hour marathon. whew! and im off for a break. And yes, i do blogging whenever i take breaks. :)

I was browsing through betshopboy's domain and noticed he did a review about Enkay's Blog. And after i saw the captions "Enkay's MP3/Video Player Giveaway", my mind was all centered on one thing, " I GOTA HAVE THAT MP3 PLAYER! ".
  • Its a 1GB Beauty (wow! enough to accompany me for study marathons)
  • w/ MiniSD slot Integrated Speaker on the back ( That means multi-media enjoyment. . yes!)

Blogging sa Chowking

Posted by Batang Yagit on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 9:09 am in Personal - Philippines.

Free WiFi kahit saan.

Hehehehe.

How I Survived The Post-Influential Blogs Get-Together (And The Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs Dinner, Too)

Posted by Prudence and Madness on Monday, August 6th, 2007 @ 3:21 am in Personal - Philippines.

A post published a little late. But it will never be too late for a lot of link loves and a bit of a story.

The Top 10 Emerging Influential Blog Announcement was made over dinner at Max’s restaurant, Park Square, Makati last August 1. Actually I had second thoughts about coming because I wasn’t in the mood to be sociable and also, I thought I have clinic early morning the next day in Bulacan. That would mean I can’t stay up too late and that I have to go home to Bulacan during the night, which could be dangerous.

Fortunately, the clinic duty was rescheduled to Friday, which means I have the whole Wednesday and Thursday free. Just perfect for an all-nighter. So, off I went to Park Square.

The event started a bit late. And, of course, no blog event would be complete without some shameless plugging. One by one, bloggers had their time in the limelight to introduce themselves and their beloved blogs. No use being shy during times like these because it is inevitable. However, I found it hard to get everybody’s attention when they are busy eyeing dinner that’s being served. Everybody was probably thinking, “let’s get this over soon so we could chow”, including the blogger speaking.

After our splendid (and free) dinner of fried chicken, lumpia, rice, and caramel bar, the raffle for the 10 winners of $100 each begun. And here are the lucky ones (most of which were not present during the event):

  1. Maryrose
  2. Sofia for BiSEAN
  3. J Angelo Racoma
  4. Heneroso
  5. Fruityoaty
  6. Annamanila
  7. Webbyman
  8. Marie Casas
  9. Mira
  10. Jehzeel Laurente

There were also freebies that has been raffled off. However, I’m known to be unlucky when it comes to raffles (and men!) so I didn’t really expect to win any.

And because the night is nearing its end (reservation of function room was only until 9 pm), finally the top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs were announced.

Congratulations to:

  1. An Apple a Day
    The Philosophical Bastard
  2. The D Spot
  3. CokskiBlue
  4. Make Money Online with a 13-Year Old
  5. Culture Shiok!
    Utakgago
  6. Kubiertos
  7. FruityOaty
    PinoyBlogero
  8. The Dork Factor
    The Anitokid Chronikos
  9. Gibbs Cadiz
  10. Confessions of a Hopeless Romantic

Only four of my top 10 made it. However, I didn’t really expect that all of my candidates’ blogs are read by the blogging community who participated in this project. And yes, I voted for some non-Filipino blogs because I think these blogs may become influential to the Philippine Blogosphere, if only the Philippine blogging community will read it.

And, of course, there has been some sparks of controversies regarding the winners and how they, according to critics, do not fit the definition of an influential blog. Many had different opinions and notions about the use of “Influential Blogs” in this writing project. A lot have been complaining that most of the winners aren’t at all influential or that aren’t popular to deserve the title. Also, someone made a case about the project relying more on popularity rather than the actual influence exerted on the entire blogosphere. Some complained that information about the writing project wasn’t disseminated properly because only a small portion of the Philippine Blogosphere actually knew about it and participated, and so, the results of the top 10 didn’t really reflect that of the entire community.

Perhaps Benj is right for saying it’s hard to reconcile “emerging” with “influential”, being that to be able to exert much influence meant authority and that authority does come only after a bit more experience. But to analyze it with regards to the community of bloggers which participated in the said project, I think it’s enough to say that the winners did exert a kind of influence over those who voted. Most bloggers did vote for those they think exerted influence on them. And I think influence will always mean a measure of popularity. So, yes, it is a popularity contest relative to the group which participated in the writing project. That’s enough reason to believe that the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs project did serve its purpose.

Controversies are expected during and after awarding ceremonies and I do think it’s normal. I have read and heard a lot of opinions and most have proven their valid points well. What is important is that we keep the discussion as civil as possible. We are a group of rational individuals with different opinions but with utmost respect on one another person’s right to express personal thoughts. So we should act and speak like rational human beings. At least, the catfights were only limited to a few blogs.

Okay, so let’s leave that story about the Top 10 Emerging Influential Blogs Dinner and go on to the Post-Dinner events, which I think are more fun.

Some people don’t like going home early, especially from a dinner get-together. So, Kevin, Jhed, Shari, Allan, and Jake accompanied Heneroso (our financier for the night!) to have his new $100 converted to pesos and stayed at Giligan’s. Benj, Jeff, Coy, Rick, Gibbs (who wasn’t able to make it to dinner), Ederic, and Poytee were also there and we occupied on long, long table (one reason why I didn’t get to talk to the people on the other end hehe). Just had some beers and few strange-looking cocktail drinks (Jhed, remember?!).

After we got tired hanging out at Giligan’s and Benj, Jeff, Coy, Ederic, and Poytee decided to go home, we went to Starbucks 6750 to have our proper after-booze coffee drink. Allan and Jake had to go home after a while and only Jhed, Kevin, Shari, and I were left. We talked about a lot of things (of course, that includes sex), and some gossips (Who doesn’t gossip anyway?). And yes, we did stay there until around 6 a.m., when the night shift has already timed out and the new batch of barristas have timed in.

Feeling hungry (but not for pastries), we staked out Tapa King at Park Square. They didn’t open until 6:30 a.m., and so we looked like lost puppies outside the establishment’s door, waiting to be let in.

At around 7 a.m., exhaustion and lack of sleep finally got to us and we decided to go home. Now I know how Starbucks 6750 looks like when it’s deserted. Haha.
