It rained then it stopped

Posted by HyukTa.net on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 11:51 pm in Personal - Philippines.

I’m late in announcing this. Quentin Tarantino is in the Philippines for the 9th Cinemanila. He was given a lifetime achievement award. He gave a seminar last August 11 which I thought was on the 14th. XP Darnit. I even put it in my Google Calendar. Lesson learned: not to check Google Calendar when you’re very sleepy still.

I so want this:

Motorola RAZR 2
Motorola RAZR2

Motorola RAZR2 is sleek and its features are just awesome. I am curious about the touch screen on the front. The selling price now is quite too much for me. I’ll wait until it gets cheaper. 8)

All school levels are suspended today like last week’s. P I knew this was going to happen. *lol* The rain poured down hard, it was hardly windy, and cockroaches crawled to houses’ outer walls since it’s already flooded outside. ^^ Here’s one picture I took earlier (more here):

I have a friend who went directly straight to PRC's main office and ask when are they going to release the 2007 Nursing board exam results, they gave him a piece of paper that states there that the results will be out a last week of August. He said he ask them if they can give an exact date, they replied that they cannot give an exact date but said that August 27, 2007 is a safe day to release

Carl the Kid Blogger

Posted by Kirbitz on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 6:05 pm in Miscellaneous.

Somehow, the Internet is better seen on the Point of view of a Kid.

Carl, is just another next door filipino teen whom according to Freud's theory, is still on his Phallic stage. He goes to school just like any other high-school kid, plans to play in a band, mingles well with others. But what sets him apart from all the other kids out there, you ask? He is The Kid Blogger. The youngest online earner!

Inspired by the works of his dad, he turned into blogging after failing the first time. He started his site back from Feb 4, '07 and he was 13! Yes you heard me right, the very first teen year. I couldnt even imagine myself being infront of the PC all the time. Heck, i didnt even know what a weblog was when i was 12! (im 19 now).

Get this, he even got featured on a National newspaper in the Philippines! now, can you top that?.

He's made alot of distinguished posts already. But the one i like his post about traffic generation. Hop by his blog and youll be amazed how carl, now 14, made it to the pinnacle of Blogging success.

Keep on Rocking Carl!

Live and Let Live(r) Pate!

Posted by A Day In The Life... on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 10:40 am in Miscellaneous.

Boy am I lucky to have a wifey that loves to cook and make different kinds of dishes… and is damn good at it! She just prepared a whole container of LIVER PATE for me which, in my honest opinion, is way way better than those sold at Santies or Almon Marina or any other delicatessen shop you could think of.

Yum! Pate on my left… whole wheat Crostini on my right… iced tea (light, mind you!) and late night television to keep me company… doesn’t get any better than that! Unless the wifey’s beside me… and “sexy time” comes next! LOL! :D

But not soon after eating…! (Baka magka-appendicitis!) Hahaha! :P

On Friendships, Death, and Legacy

Posted by Prudence and Madness on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 10:36 am in Personal - Philippines.

For us, people in their late 20’s (there, I said it), death is already something we’ve given a serious thought or two. As Serj puts it, think of the years between the present and the year we were in Grade 5, put that together with our age today and that’s when, one by one, we would inevitably start complaining of chronic illnesses, like hypertension, dyslipidemia, or if someone gets unlucky, cancer. Come to think of it, that time isn’t very far off actually, for the years pass us by faster now that we’re older than when we were younger.

This has been the topic of discussion when my friends and I went beer-drinking at La Mesa Grille in SM Mall of Asia after watching Ratatouille last Saturday. Or rather, this has been the topic of discussion for two weeks in a row. But we’re not quite that worried yet about aging and death. We simply thought of how the years have gone by and how through those years our friendship was strengthened. I guess Nietzchean philosophy still applies: what doesn’t kill a friendship strengthens it and it isn’t called poison either.

We talked about the time when one by one Death would stop for us and what we would do during everybody’s wake. Somebody joked about how their sons/daughters would be driving them to the wake because they would already be wheelchair-bound by then.

And they would still come late, as always, a friend quipped.

Laughing at the idea that our quirks would remain unchanged even when we’re already old and sagging, we agreed that for each one’s wake, those who remain will bring a bottle of that person’s favorite drink, pour him a shot in a jigger and put it on the coffin with several sticks of ciggies (even if he doesn’t smoke), lighter, and an ashtray and drink to his death and perhaps, rebirth, if there would be an afterlife. We believe that death must also be celebrated with joy like birth for death means that one has lived.

And since we were on the topic of death, we would be remiss if we do not talk about legacies, too. No, it isn’t about inheritance and wills. Rather, we agreed that, since we perceive that we are at that age when death is not imminent but is a near enough future possibility and we believe that it is important that we leave a meaningful and important legacy, we would start with doing a more veritable charity work that would involve the whole barkada. We’re not simply going to gather our money and give a certain amount to a certain institution. We are thinking of sponsoring the education of, at least, one child. All of us will try to come up with a certain amount each year, enough to send the child to school. But it will not end there. We will schedule visits to the child to show our genuine concern for how he and his schooling is turning out and offer help whenever possible and needed. It would be gratifying to watch how a child, given chance and all the help possible, mold his own future and grow up to be a good, well-educated person who could contribute to the betterment of the country.

It is a small endeavor perhaps, concentrating on just one child. But if time and money permit, we can start sponsoring a few more. A little difference it might make but, I think, a well-educated person will spell good benefits to a society plagued by poverty and poor education. And we need not anymore think of what he can do to benefit the country. Think of the life he’ll have! To be able to help improve another person’s life and be somewhat partly responsible for his good future is, perhaps, the best legacy one can give.

This project is still in the making. And it’s a bit complicated for us, who know nothing about organizing such projects. If you have any suggestions as to how my friends and I can go about it, please do email me. As of now, we’re still concentrating on gathering funds for our Christmas gift-giving project for kids who are working in the streets in our local area: the newspaperboys, the junior garbage collectors (they’re actually more hardworking than the government-employed garbage collectors), and the sampaguita peddlers. These kids never had the chance to experience the wonderful childhood that most of us had, all because they needed to start working at an early stage to be able to provide for their family and for themselves. We do believe that these kids need to be given the chance to, at least, experience, even for a while, that they are kids, free from the problems of the adult world.

So now you see why I love my friends. For people who’ve known one another for a decade or two (some of us were classmates since kindergarten!), we’ve gone through a lot of joys and hardships that could perhaps make any shallow friendships crumble to dust. And yet here we are still. We’re not only a group of people who’re happy together because of booze, food, and gimmicks. We are a group of people who’ve seen each other’s bests and worsts and still, we love each other as much as we can while still alive and, for sure, until death. If there is something that I could give someone before I finally take that last breath, I would wish that someone to have the best friends anyone could have in this world…just like the friends that I have now.

Pista Atenista

Posted by Batang Yagit on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 10:10 am in Personal - Philippines.

Agosto ang paborito kong buwang sa Ateneo. Bakit?
Good night.

Government’s goal: Continue keeping the public in the dark?

Posted by Bryanton Post on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 7:09 am in Politics.

"True freedom depends on freedom of information. You can't have one without the other."
- Peter S. Prichard, editor, USA Today, 1993

Why does it seem hard for the Arroyo administration to consider the people's right to information bill an urgent one? Has this government, like BusinessMirror said in today's editorial, become a "government of secret and shady deals"?

"The Philippines should have its own freedom of information legislation. It’s high time the government stops treating people like mushrooms in the dark constantly being fed horseshit," BusinessMirror said in its editorial.

A government of secret and shady deals

IF there’s one thing glaringly absent from the President’s legislative agenda now lodged with the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (Ledac), it’s the absence of the proposed Freedom of Information Act.

The private sector, especially the foreign chambers of commerce, have been clamoring for it, and yet their pleas don’t seem to get across to Malacañang.

It’s a shame because if there’s one reform initiative that would really make a difference quickly in the life of this country in the next three years without entailing any financial cost, it would be such a law. We may call it the “Freedom of Access to Information Act,” or to be more ambitious, the “Transparency in Governance Act.”

Nokia Battery Recall

Posted by GadgetSpotter on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 5:25 am in Technology.

It seems that laptops or "notebooks" are not the only devices being plagued by battery recalls. Mobile phone giant Nokia is also recalling several (around 46 million) batteries produced by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan. Reasons are more or less the same as with the laptop battery recall, chances of dislodge, exploding during charging, and the like. As if laptops were bad enough, mobile phones are commonly placed in the pocket. Before images of burnt legs and scorched pockets rocket into your mind, find out how to determine if your battery is recalled on the rest of this post.

Not all Nokia branded batteries are to be recalled. Only the BL-5C model which is pretty commonplace because of the sheer number of mobiles its compatible with. From as low-end as the 1100 to several of the N-series such as the N70 and N72, the BL-5C has pretty much left a pretty big footprint.

You can determine if the battery you have can be replaced at Nokia by checking out the Nokia battery replacement site and entering the data asked for.

Are you greedy? Get smorty!

Posted by Kirbitz on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 1:44 am in Miscellaneous.

Recently, i made a post about August Activities of Kirbitz, and if youve read about it, Smorty is not included in the list. This is primarily because my request for membership has been denied when i signed up just a week ago.

When i opened my e-mail just a moment ago, ive had the usual e-mails from programs, link exchanges and stuff like that. Much to my surprise, Smorty was there. Low and behold. . . Kirbitz got Accepted! And that means more earnings for Kirbitz.

I figured i will have a short review about Smorty just so my much valued readers will know what it's all about. So here it goes. . .

Smorty is a get paid to blog program much like Payperpost and blogsvertise but with an edge. The site design is simple yet elegant and direct to the point. Much to the liking of most readers. There's no doubt they have been rising along rankings recently. Expect them to rise in the coming weeks.

After i clicked the confirmation link, i have been taken to my "dashboard". And there awaits two, yes you heard it right, 2! opportunities waiting for me. And guess what, they pay $6 each. Now hows a $12 starting fee sound like? One was about Smorty and the other is about commerce. And yes, im getting paid for writing this post. ;) Plus, they emphasized in their front page, "Get paid to blog weekly". So, if you want to get paid for blogging, This is certainly a big step towards your dream earnings.

Thus my post title, "Are you Greedy? get Smorty!"

e-commerce

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Tuesday, August 14th, 2007 @ 12:44 am in Personal - International.

A few weeks back, J was asked by a friend if he could create a website for her to sell her cakes. He said yes without batting an eyelash, trying to exude the confidence of an employed IT professional. But deep inside, he knew he should be hitting myself for saying yes.

J recalled to me his days as a first year IT student. One of the first big projects they had was to create was an online store. This was to give them an idea of how object oriented programming is used to create software components that mimic a complete e-commerce cycle. He clearly remembered how tedious, complex, and very time-consuming it was because they were coding from scratch and arguing about everything related tp the project. Now, he says, it is like reliving the same nightmare except this time, he's all alone.

However, in the midst of his depression, he remembered the first advice their professor told them.

Don't reinvent the wheel. Nick others' code.

Now that does not sound very creative at all. It even borders on something criminal. But, according to J, in the IT world that is given some decent names like reusability, open source, etc.

This prompted him to do some research on the net and have found some sites that practically saves you from all that trouble. One is Ashop Commerce. The company provides a complete ecommerce software solution that can be integrated with major banks, gateways and third party processors like PayPal. To him, that means less headache and more savings in time and money. Plus with all its features and technical support, he is confident that our friend's website would look and function like any professionally made websites out there.

Lesson learned! Before saying yes, make sure to do some research first because next time, one might not be as lucky.
