The Malu Fernandez apology

Here's GMANews.TV's report on Malu Fernandez's alleged statement. At this point, it seems the statement indeed came from Fernandez.

Manila Standard columnist quits after getting OFWs' ire
Source: GMANews.TV

Malu Fernandez, lifestyle columnist of Manila Standard, resigned from the paper and the travel magazine she used to write for after getting the ire of readers, particularly Filipino overseas workers in Dubai, a statement posted on blogsites and sent to the GMANews.TV email said.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this. To date I have submitted my resignation letters to both the Manila Standard and People Asia, on that note may this matter be laid to rest," Fernandez said in the statement forwarded to GMANews.TV Thursday evening.

Fernandez's resignation came after readers reacted to an article she wrote for the newspaper and the magazine that apparently made fun of OFWs travel style.

The Malu Fernandez controversy continues

Here's yesterday's TV Patrol World report on the Malu Fernandez controversy. Courtesy of Mukamo Philippines:

As you can see in the video, TV Patrol World's basis to report that Fernandez apologized was this page.

Here's a report on the same issue by ABS-CBN News:

Society columnist quits over OFW bashing
Source: ABS-CBN News

Complaints sent via the Internet and through othery types of media led a Manila-based society columnist to resign from her job following her negative comments about overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau reported Thursday.

Bureau chief Dindo Amparo reported that Filipinos in the Middle East proved they can make a difference by uniting for a cause against columnist Malu Fernandez.

Now, this online report said that ABS-CBN 2 sought Fernandez for comment but she declined. Instead, the report said that Fernandez sent a letter to the network saying, "I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this. To date I have submitted my resignation letters to both the Manila Standard (Today) and People Asia, on that note may this matter be laid to rest.” Which is what the alleged online apology also said.

So, can we really now say that the Fernandez's alleged apology in this site real? But if TV Patrol World actually sought Fernandez for her reaction (but declined), shouldn't the program check with the two papers if, for example, they indeed received such letters of resignation, as what the alleged Fernandez's statement said?

The ABS-CBN 2 online report also quoted Fernandez as saying: “I am humbled by the vehement and heated response provoked by my article. To say that this article was not meant to malign, hurt or express prejudice against the OFWs now sounds hollow after reading through all the blogs from Filipinos all over the world.” Which was also in the alleged Fernandez's statement. The report said that the statement was posted in the online version of the Standard Today. But I could not find any such link in the Standard Today site.

DOLE OK’s online job hiring

Posted by on Thursday, August 23rd, 2007 @ 6:29 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

Philippine Labor Secretary Brion announced last Wednesday that recruitment agencies can now recruit over the internet. These are the guidelines they issued when it came to online jub hunting:

  • Carefully read all the information in the website. Examine whether the company name and profile appear believable. Check for its company profile or click the “about us” button to verify if the office address and phone numbers are correct.
  • Examine the website design and check all the links and pages. A legitimate recruitment agency is likely to invest in web design, while an illegal placement firm is likely to have a cheap-looking website. But this might always be the case.
  • Look at the instructions about submitting a résumé and application papers. Most legitimate websites prefer that applicants to fill out a résumé form online or send information via e-mail.
  • Examine the job offer. If it sounds too good to be true—as the saying says—it probably is.
  • Check the recruiter’s background and other information about recruiter or the company by using search engines, like Yahoo and Google. Do an Internet search using the name of the recruiting firm or other topics posted on its website.
  • Check the domain name of the website. A legitimate recruiter will have one, which features additional information about the company.
  • Report suspicious recruitment offers posted on the Internet to the POEA or other authorities.

My thoughts on this
Pro’s for recruiters: better and wider reach to potential applicants.
Pro’s for applicants: easy access to job openings and therefore an increased opportunity to be employed.

Anybody can put up a website and claim to be a legal recruiter so do some homework first and try to research more about the recruiter or employer you are interested in. Being ignorant is never an excuse. :)

So it isn’t just the lead laced barbies and formaldehyde on clothing, and White Rabbit.

But I wonder how they got to our store shelves in the first place? Are these bootleg? But how come they’re up and out for all to see and take?

Don’t we have the proper authorities to regulate and insure consumer safety? Are they turning a blind eye? Aren’t we?

And China isn’t even alone in the guilt. Let’s look some place closer, like home.

The week it was

Posted by Batang Yagit on Thursday, August 23rd, 2007 @ 12:40 pm in Personal - Philippines.

As you may have noticed, I didn't get to post much this week. I have been busy with some things here. Thank God I still find time to make this post despite that I have to study for my quiz this morning. Mind you guys, it's a really really long quiz. Three weeks of my classmates' reports packed in a single quiz. That's quite long, isn't it.

So what was keeping me busy this week? Hmmm... a lot of things.
  • Thesis Papers. Yeah, I am graduating this March (hopeful). As for graduating students, we are required to make our thesis paper. For us engineering students, we call it Project Study. We have to come up with a prototype system that we could use to help our community. Since we are joining the 4th Smart SWEEP this year, we are obliged to make our project study relevant to this year's theme which is Going Wireless for Disaster Preparedness. We already have decided what project to make. The only problem we had was the submission of the first three chapters of the thesis paper. It's quite difficult cause we have to submit it on Tuesday and we have started doing it the day before. (We were a day late, we submitted it on the Wednesday)

  • Malaysian Friends. Seven Malaysian friends are here in Davao to do a mission for the church (Hope of God). They are here to introduce their Church to the Uni (that's how the truncate the word University) students since they see the potential from these kids. Anyway, I have been going out with them for a couple of nights now. It was fun. I enjoyed their company a lot.

  • Microcontroller Project. This one set me on a bad mood. The project was supposed to be submitted on the morning of Thursday. Until Wednesday, nobody took the initiative to make the project. So I decided to do it on the afternoon of Wednesday. I was at the Kalasag Office the whole afternoon, squeezing my brain out while I work on the program. I am not even sure if the given conditions (from our teacher) that I know were right. Since almost everyone were aware that I was working on the project, someone from our class asked for the HEX File. His statement really set my mood really bad. He could have asked for the source code if he wanted to copy. At least in that way, he has the chance of learning the code I made. Well, he did not. If that's what he wants then fine. So I decided not to share it to the class (who did not do the program), except of course to my group mates. Again, everything did not end there. One of my group mates, a trusted friend, spilled out the information that we already finished the code. And me on the other hand, not knowing what my friend told the class, said that we have not done anything yet and I am still working on it. (Denial to the MAX). I've been like this for the whole time not until that trusted friend admitted that he told the class about our code. WTF! So what's up now? Am I being presented as the antagonist of the show? ... Thursday morning, I woke up late from the stress the previous night had brought me. I was shocked when I entered the room, only to find out that my classmates were around that trusted friend's workstation cramming their way in getting a copy of the code. Ok. No need to explain. I see what's happening. I don't need to freak out. I don't need to make any wrong moves.
Hmmm...what else kept me busy for the time I was not online? Aha, I've been watching Dragon Zakura for the past week. It's a Jap Series about a lawyer who became a teacher. I guess it's similar to Gokusen. :D

Ooooh. Tsk tsk. I just hope ABS-CBN 2 would not get a "bum steer" or in local journalism parlance, "kuryente," over its report on Malu Fernandez's alleged apology earlier.

Jeers to TV Patrol World's for a sloppy report on Malu Fernandez's alleged apology. The report, which aired a few minutes earlier, solely relied only on this page. It did not bother to check the side of Fernandez or even the papers where she write for (Manila Standard Today and People Asia).
