What the?!?

I haven't been a fan of beauty pageants of late but this one got my attention when they featured it on Rove last Sunday. You have got to watch this.

click to watch miss south carolina fumble

Ano daw? I couldn't get her point. Can you? She was going around in circles the whole time.

Alright, let's give her the benefit of the doubt. I suppose she must have been terribly nervous at the time, hence, the fumble. I mean I, for one, personally hate speaking in front of a huge crowd. I know lots of people do. But candidates in this type of competition surely must have had enough practice to have that presence of mind. Then again, in Miss South Carolina's case, maybe not. :P

I guess the kicker here is that inspite of making that boo-boo on international TV, she still managed to bag third place in the pageant. Imagine that! Now I reckon it's the judges who do not have the 'presence of mind.' Pun definitely intended. :D

Last Minute Travel Tips

I'm now back from my Malaysia trip. After observing my travel habits including those of my fellow passengers I want to share to my readers this indispensable tips to make your hundred or thousand miles journey hassle free and without inconveniencing other travellers.

Before going to the airport:

*Always have a blue or black in pen handy to sign immigration declaration forms and other documents.

*Remember to lock every single zipper in your bag. When packing, to get fewer wrinkles on your clothes, roll them! Particularly shirts and they also allow you to add more stuff into your luggage. Oprah even does it.

*After all the bomb scares around the world, make sure you don’t bring in any liquid on your hand luggage to avoid inconvenience. (You could bring a certain regulated amount but it is better just to put it on your checked luggage).

*Dress light but bring a jacket just in case you can’t stand the cold temperature inside an aircraft. Don’t overdress unless of course your final destination is Japan. And finally, don’t wear clothes with metallic objects as you will regret it after going through countless security checks.

*Bring extra clothes on your carry-on to freshen up and just in case your flight will be delayed forever and you don’t have access to your luggage anymore.

*Remember PLMT -- passport, luggage, money, ticket

At the airport:

*Be aware if the airport where you will be departing requires you to pay anything like travel taxes or terminal fees. Most airports wouldn't charge you anymore for those taxes as it is already incorporated in your ticket except Manila, Saigon and Bangkok to name a few.

*Carry less hand luggage as much as possible especially when transiting to different airports.

*If you don’t want to use your credit card abroad always have an extra U$20 in your wallet even after your trip. Just in case you get stuck in an airport even if that bag you got in London looks great... it's not worth it if you're starving and lost in a 10 hour layover in an airport. There’s an exemption: Singapore Changi International Airport – where else would you look forward to being delayed.

Inside an aircraft:

*For the millionth time, do remember to turn off your mobile phone before boarding the aircraft because everyone will blame you when the plane crashes. Remember the preflight announcement? “Turn off any electronic devices as it may interfere with the aircraft navigation equipment.”

*When seating in economy class remember that personal space is a premium and needed to be respected at all times. Avoid reclining your seat before take-off or during landing. Remember, you are inside an airplane, not a Victory Liner.

*It is perfectly fine to take off your shoes during along flight and people would not mind but make sure that your feet don’t smell like a skunk as the plane is an enclosed space.

*The low humidity levels of outside air being supplied to the cabin can cause drying of the the eyes which can irritate wearers of contact lenses.

*And finally, no, they do not serve hard drinks for breakfast. Look on the bright side, you should avoid them including coffee and tea as they act as diuretics.

‘Call us Batch 2007,’ says successful nursing test retaker

Posted by PHILIPPINE NURSE on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 10:27 pm in Miscellaneous.

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines -- Nurses who passed the scandal-ridden 2006 licensure examinations wanted to call themselves members of Batch 2007, after successfully passing the licensure test for a second time.
"Refer to us as Batch 2007, please," said Cyndi Erfe, one of the three Baguio nurses who first exposed cheating in 2006.
Erfe was among the June 2006 board passers who gave up their licenses and retook the five sets of examinations in 2007.
She said retaking the whole test erased the stigma of last year's examinations, which prompted American nurses' associations to review the licenses of Filipino nurses seeking employment there.
She is testifying against two former board examiners and two nursing review centers for their alleged role in test leakages in 2006.
Maria Grace Lacanaria, nursing school dean of the Saint Louis University, said nurses of Batch 2006 who chose to keep their licenses still "have great professional futures."

Chief nurse urges docs to stay in RP

Posted by PHILIPPINE NURSE on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 10:23 pm in Miscellaneous.

The president of the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) made a personal appeal to Filipino doctors who want to take up nursing to be able to work abroad.

Dr. Leah Paquiz said the PNA cannot control the number of people who want to take up the nursing profession because it is the right of every individual.

She, however, said: " Makikiusap po ako sa kanila: Huwag na po kayong mag-nurse para naman po mayroong mga doktor na maiwan sa Pilipinas (I'm appealing to them: Please don't take up nursing. We need doctors in the Philippines).”

Paquiz admitted that more doctors are determined to leave the country to work overseas as nurses because of the bigger pay and incentives.

The PNA chief also said that she is concerned over the exodus of doctors to other countries to look for work as nurses.

“Madami kasi. Nawawalan na po tayo ng doktor. Iyon ang nakakalungkot, nawawalan na tayo ng doctor na titingin sa atin (They're too many. We're losing our doctors. It's sad because we're losing the doctors who should take care of us),” she added.

Still on the Malu Fernandez controversy: Some questions and insights (and is she back again in the Manila Standard Today?)

Posted by Bryanton Post on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 11:53 am in Politics.

And I almost thought I'm finished posting about the Malu Fernandez controversy. But these things are too important to just throw them away.

First, now that Fernandez supposedly resigned (but more on this a bit later), other crucial question needs to be addressed: Are the editors at People Asia (or at least the ones who edited Fernandez's piece before it got published) not culpable for deciding to publish the article nevertheless?

Here's Freedom Watch on the issue:

Why did People Asia decide to publish Malu Fernandez's story anyway?
Source: Freedom Watch

University of the Philippines journalism department chair Rachel Khan raised an important question in the still raging Malu Fernandez controversy: Why did the People Asia editors let Malu Fernandez's article "From Boracay to Greece!" pass through?

While the blogosphere is full of castigating remarks against Fernandez, Khan wrote in her blog last August 25, "(N)o one seems to realize that the editors who decided to publish that piece of trash are equally--if not even more culpable--of insensitivity and bigotry against the hard working Filipino overseas workers. Who made the editorial decision to publish the article in the first place??!!!"

Read more here.

And for Fernandez's supposed resignation from Manila Standard Today and People Asia, I have to verify this tomorrow whether this really came out (it looks like it came from Standard Today), but take a look at this:

Got this from this Smoke's blog through The Philippine Experience. Is this true or what? Will post about this later when I can check the actual issue. Repeat: I am not sure about this yet. So for now, let's take this photo with a grain of salt, okay?

Some things can be seen from the whole issue: First: Blogs have become not just a source of opinion, but also of news; Second: That this is one of the few instances in which news got first picked up by the online medium before the mainstream media noticed it (although the rapid rise of the local blogging community has made it sure that this is not the first time it's going to happen); and third, that citizens have become increasingly critical of the press and the role it plays in our society.

Related Posts hack for Blogger 2

Posted by Batang Yagit on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 11:15 am in Personal - Philippines.

It's been a while since the last time I updated the features for my blog. I am jealous with Word Press' related posts feature. I have been waiting for blogger to do the same. Though it can be done in blogger if you know how to program. But since i'm not good in programming XML calls and JSON, it's better if I wait.

While I was blog hopping this morning, I came across this Hoctro's Place wherein he published several hacks for blogger. The related posts interest me most. I have not explored his site yet. I concentrated on the related posts hack first.

So how does it work? The Related Posts Hack utilize the posted item's Labels. These labels are used to make JSON calls for items with similar posts. So what the hack really do is list the recent posts containing the same label as the opened item. If a post contains several labels, then the hack lists the related items for each of the labels. The hack is easy to install but make sure you make a back-up of your template.

A change in strategy, A change in template

Posted by Make Money with Kirby on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 9:46 am in Miscellaneous.

There are things in life that are better off changed for the greater good. Its not very likely, but i have to say one of these is your blog template.

As you might have noticed, i changed my blog template. At first look, it doesnt seem like its a blogger blog at all. They say, Content is King and yes, i couldnt agree more. But one thing they miss out is the way the template should present itself. To get your readers to stay, they need a break from the usual minima and rounders that seem to infect most of the blogs.

Dont
get me wrong. . . Content is the first one to be noticed like
Mike Perry's blog; its so generic, the only thing he changed was the font! but look at him now, he earns more weekly than what my dad earns in two. Will this change affect my blog? Only time and earnings will tell. So, i should say. . .

If content is king, layout is queen!

I wanna give a shoutout to Lady for the tip. Hey! you still have to teach me a bit more about the html codings. haha!

If you guys want to get your blog a make-over, do visit Cool-templates and FinalSense. you might just get what suites your taste.

New Hanford ICE Reverse Underwear

I have here my newly bought Hanford ICE Reverse underwear. What I like about it is that Hanford did a great job in using a very soft piece of clothing for the underwear yet making it look like your blue jeans (

Another factor that you need to consider when choosing the state to apply for nclex is their requirements, for example, some states some state requires that you be a cgfns passer and so on.. #2 Visit

Blast!

Posted by HyukTa.net on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 5:48 am in Personal - Philippines.

BLAST is re-opening once more and we’re looking for new staffers! D We need all the help we can get to get this group running smoothly. These are what we need:

Translators
We are looking for Japanese-to-English (urgent) and Chinese-to-English translators. We are not very strict on having every Japanese or Chinese text translated like author notes or SFX, but being able to translate the latter would be great.

Raw Providers/Scanners
We are looking for Japanese yaoi or doujinshi raws. But if you have Chinese yaoi manga or doujinshi, we might give it a try. We do not require scanners to have their books cut or have every pages of it ripped. Click here for hyukta’s sample scan of a grayscale or b&w image that was only bent at most. You must provide us scan samples for colored and black and white pages.

Editors
Editors must already have knowledge with Adobe Photoshop. An experienced editor is not required, but will be a great advantage. If you’re a newbie, you must have the patience and will to learn. Fonts will be provided and a short instruction/requirement in editing. We do not have time constraints for editors, but you should be able to finish in 2-3 weeks at most per chapter.

Proofreaders
The proofreader must be at least almost-excellent in English grammar and able to point out misspelled words and missing punctuations. He/She will have a week minimum to proofread a translation.

Quality-checkers
Quality-checkers must be good at editing as well. You must check if the edits are consistent in terms of width-size and fonts; cleaning, leveling, cloning, and curves are properly done; and, be able to take note of grammar errors, missing punctuations, and misspelled words. The QC-er must be able to explain properly to the editor of corrections. Experience is not required, but an advantage.

Hyukta’s Assistant
Yes, Hyukta is looking for a full-time assistant! *lol* XD The assistant must have IRC access and be logged in most of the time because Hyukta tends to leave messages there instead of sending an email; will (and must be able to) upload releases to Blast’s IRC bot; help ‘poke’ staffers from time to time when there are stuff to edit, scan, or translate; and, have some leadership skills among others.

We will have some releases in the next few days. We’re almost running out of projects, so… Give us something to do? Join us too please? ^.^

This is crossposted in every community I’m in. :3 I hope the mods don’t mind.

The Radio Files # 4 - Announcing Part 4 (My Claire Miranda Notes)

Posted by Everywhere and Here on Monday, August 27th, 2007 @ 1:48 am in Personal - Philippines.

I’ve been cleaning my house in preparation for my move back to the US. Sifting through a ton of stuff is no easy feat both physically and emotionally but my goal is to squeeze my life into suitcases and boxes.

Being a packrat has its pros and cons. For the former, I have so many things of sentimental value; for the latter, I have so many things of sentimental value. The challenge is figuring out what I really need versus what I want to keep. My mantra is “be brutal about purging oneself of what is not necessary”. So while I’ve been separating my life into piles labelled “Keep”, “Donate”, “Discard”, I found more lessons learned from my time in radio.

These were put together by our Programming Director in NU107 in 1995, Claire Miranda. As soon as my life is more in order and the dust has settled, I’ll scan old pics and post either on my flickr or here. Until then, you’ll just have to Google these former bosses of mine that I keep mentioning.
