Celebrating 27 Years at Pork Barrel

Posted by Prudence and Madness on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 10:57 pm in Personal - Philippines.

So now you know how young I am

My birthday was actually yesterday, September 5, but I’ve been celebrating my birthday since last Saturday. For the joint celebration of my birthday and Herbert’s birthday, the barkada went to Pork Barrel (which is somewhere in Timog avenue, I think. Not the one along Congressional. Or whatever. I’m really bad in remembering street names) for a night of good food, videoke, and barkada bonding.

But, first, we dropped by TriNoma because I’m really craving for some black forest ice cream cake at Five Cows.

five-cows-logo.jpg

I miss the white-washed chairs and the colorful pillows.

dsc01625.JPG

I wasn’t able to take photos much because I was busy waiting for the cake to be served. Hehe. And all the good shots are in Herbert’s camera. Maybe if he could email me some of the photos, I’d post it here.

Also, I wasn’t able to take a photo of the luscious slice of Black Forest Ice Cream Cake because it’s almost eaten to oblivion before I realized that I want to take a photo of it for my blog.

So maybe in my next visit I’d be able to take some photos.

Then we went to Pork Barrel. Our friends, the Penguins, AJ and Jo, were still now with us at that time but AJ said she called to have a VIP room reserved for us. When we inquired though, there were no reservations under AJ or Jo’s name. We even tried asking if there was a reservation made under the name, “Penguins”. But there were none.

But since we’re a bit early (it was only 7:30 p.m. then), we just took an unreserved VIP room. Only later when AJ and Jo arrived that we learned that the reservation was made under the name, “Jedi Council” (a name we call our Saturday drinking sessions). We transferred to the reserved VIP room because it was smaller, cooler, and more private.

Barrel of beer and lots of pulutan…that’s only the start of a long-drawn evening of singing, eating and drinking.

The Tower of Power! And, no, that’s not piss

So, yeah, we had that tower, 2 barrels, and 2 buckets of beer. And lots of sisig, buttered corn, Hungarian sausage, seafood fest, crispy tofu, peanuts, and kropek. Goodbye health and hello to cholesterol!

But at least, we had loads of fun!

Me and Bestfriend Mutya. Promise, we are not tomato red in real life.

I can’t believe, though, that they made me sing “Baby, One More Time” by Britney Spears AGAIN. I think this is in commemoration of my first attempt at the song during our Barkadalympics ‘07 Latian getaway (What can I do? It’s the only song I know from the songs they picked for me to sing). ‘Was thinking of doing it Marty Casey style but sadly it didn’t come out that way. Haha.

We left at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and decided to drop by Starbucks West ave. for a bit of caffeine (and sugar rush). Even if it’s raining and we’re still getting wet despite the umbrella above our heads, we liked hanging out at Starbucks, or any coffee shop for that matter. We just don’t seem to run out of things to talk about. Call it chismax but who doesn’t like to talk gossips? Or reminiscing about the good ‘ol days?

After an hour, we decided to go home. For one, they don’t like spending 3:33 a.m. out in the street because of the Exorcism of Emily Rose movie. Good thing I didn’t see this movie because I’m already scared shit just hearing them talk about it.

Also, the hospital awaits me for my 24-hours hospital duty.

But despite those, I enjoyed very much this celebration. And I also got a new Starbucks tumbler out of it. Hehe.

(More pictures to follow, if Herbert will send me those that are in his camera. Hehe.)

Beware All Bloggers!!!

Posted by "Travel blogging? Is that thing still around?" on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 9:00 pm in Personal - Philippines.

I got this very important news from BBC warning all bloggers regarding the spread of viral storms attacking Google's Blogger site. The site is being used by hackers who are posting fake entries to some blogs that could infect a Windows PC.

The following text were taken from http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6970368.stm

The fake entries contain weblinks that lead to booby-trapped downloads that could infect a Windows PC. The Blogger attack is the latest in a series by a gang that has managed to hijack hundreds of thousands of PCs.

The entries on the blogs have the same text as some of the spam distributed by the group behind the attacks. These attempt to trick people into clicking on links and downloading booby-trapped files using cleverly crafted messages.

Some pose as YouTube links others claim to be looking for testers of software packages or digital greetings cards.

Security experts estimate that the group can send out so much junk mail because they have hijacked so many Windows PCs via successive campaigns. Some suspect that the group has infected more than one million PCs over the last eight months.

3 things to consider when looking for web hosting

Posted by Silkenhut's World on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 8:30 pm in Miscellaneous.

One of the first things you got to do when you want your own stand alone blog is to go look for a web host. In the Philippines alone, there are a lot of web hosting companies that you can choose from and you have to choose carefully which web hosting company you wish to purchase from.

Personally, I only compared two web hosts. The only thing I compared between them is their prices. ^_^ I did not do enough research before making the purchase so I’m currently suffering from blog downtimes.

There are three things you should consider when looking for a web hosting.

  • Price
  • Features
  • Testimonials

Price

This is the first thing that we should consider when “shopping” for a web hosting solution. We always want the cheapest option but this is not the only thing we should consider. Although you can say that you have gotten a bargain because of its low low price but it also has special features as poor customer support and frequent downtimes. Take note also that Linux Hosting is cheaper compared to Windows Hosting. (I’m not sure why it is cheaper though, my guess is that Linux is free but Windows is not?)

Features

This is the technical aspect in which you need to consider. The following are some of the common features:

  • Storage/Space - This is the storage alloted for your files (100mb? 200mb? 500mb? 1gb) For example, the default wordpress installation takes up about 4mb only but it will grow when you start to add templates and plug-ins.
  • Bandwidth per month - Every time your pages get visited “bandwidth” is getting used. Basically, it is also an important resource you need to look at since if you run out of bandwidth, your site will be unavailable. Bandwidth usage resets every month usually.
  • Subdomains - You can understand this better if you have tried free hosting such as wordpress and blogspot. Each of your blogs there are a subdomain of wordpress or blogspot. For example, in blog1.wordpress.com and blog2.wordpress.com, blog1 and blog2 are the subdomains under the domain wordpress.com. Usually, web hosts give you the power to make as many subdomains as you want. ^_^
  • Linux or Windows - You will have to choose the operating system of you web host. The installed programs, databases and other features are based from the operating system you pick. For example, your control panel when you pick Linux is Cpanel while in Windows it is Plesk. This is different from the operating system of your computer. Do not have the misconception of “Oh I’m running under Windows so I should also use Windows“.
  • Email - Does it offer email services such as silkenhut@silkenhut.com? :D
  • Server Software - This will differ depending on which OS your choose for your OS. Examples of these softwares are PHP, Perl, MySQL, PHPMyAdmin, MSSQL and ASP. I noticed that Linux hosting has more server softwares that Windows Hosting.

Take note that I only scratched the tip of the iceberg for the features you need to consider. ^_^

Testimonials

The first two, (price and features) can be found on the web hosting company’s homepage. They do their best to make you purchase from them. They only show you their good qualities while hiding their bad qualities. However, one thing you should also consider is the testimonials from their current and past clients. You can start by asking your friends which web hosting company did they purchase from and if they are satisfied. Did they come upon any problems? How fast were the services such as activation of your account, billing, and customer support? Also, ask them if they have experienced downtimes in their hosting and how often do they experience it.

So there you have it, 3 things you need to consider before choosing your web host. If only I knew this before I bought mine. I hope you do not do the same mistake that I did, choosing only the cheapest option. ^_^

How to Get Started on Your American Dream

Posted by AngTherapist.com on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 8:18 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

Hello everyone! I know most of the new PT grads are planning to get jobs in the US. It can be very overwhelming and confusing, so I’m offering tips on how to get started.

(Note: the procedure on this post is for applications from the Philippines)

If you have an agency or employer who will pay for your licensure, they may have a local agency here who will assist you with the process. Here is a general idea of what you’re going ro go through before getting to the US…

1. Decide on the state where you want to apply.

Each state will have a specific list of requirements for you to be qualified to take their licensure exam. To save you a lot of time and money, I suggest you go to www.fsbpt.org for the licensing authorities per state. Check their websites or contact them so that you have a specific idea on their requirements, or if your education credits will be enough to be qualified for licensure.

2. Check the necessary documents for credentialling / visa screening.

A must for all states is that you have yourself undergo a credentialling process through a credentialling agency determined by the state. These can either be the FCCPT, ICD, IERF, etc., and will depend on the state. If your credentialling does not include a visa screen (a requirement if you’re planning to enter the US through a working or immigrant visa; or eventually change your status), you will need to have this done separately. Read the instructions carefully and make a list of all the required documents. Make sure you double check these before sending to avoid delays in processing your papers. This usually takes about 2-6 months to complete so better have this done before anything else.

3. Apply for and take the english proficiency tests if necessary (TOEFL IBT).

This is also a requirement for visa screening. Again, given the large number of applicants, it will take some time for you to take the exam so better have this done ahead.

4. Review for the NPTE.

Once you’ve gotten the credentialling and english exam applications started, you may opt to start reviewing for the NPTE. A comprehensive review may take about 6 months, but you can actually prepare for the NPTE in about 2 months as long as you keep a schedule of about 6-8 hours a day and stick to it.
Topics sensitive to the NPTE are Musculoskeletal (Basic Anatomy/Kinesiology) and conditions, Neuroanatomy/Neurophysiology and conditions, Pediatrics, Cardio-Pulmo, Orthotics-Prosthetics, Assessment Procedures, Tests and Measures, Therapeutic Exercise, Administration (including the US Healthcare System), Ethics (Guide to PT Practice).

5. Get your Alien Identification Number (AIN)

Foreign graduates without a US Social Security Number will need to apply for this as their temporary, unique ID number for use by the FSBPT during the licensure process. This does not expire. You may get the application form from the FSBPT website.

The NEW iPod Nano (3rd Gen)! Me Likey A Lot!

Posted by A Day In The Life... on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 12:59 pm in Miscellaneous.

New iPod Nano

The entire iPod lineup is getting revamped — including the Nano.

The new Nanos will include 2-inch screens with QVGA resolution, and boast the same quality as the iPod video. These new displays have the highest pixel density that Apple has ever shipped, and it seems the extra-wide players will sport an “enhanced” UI with its own version of Cover Flow.

The iPod Nano will come bundled with three games, including a circular-Arkanoid rip-off called Vortex. The battery life is fairly impressive as well, with Apple touting 24 hours of playback for audio, and 5 hours for video (Yes!  It plays VIDEO now!).

The 4GB model will be selling for $149, though it’s only available in silver, while the rainbow-colored 8GB will cost $199.

Both models will be in stores “by this weekend”.

Me likey likey!  Darn…!  I drooled all over the floor…!

The Revenge of the Domestics

Posted by jun.anteola on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 9:12 am in Personal - Philippines.

“Success is often the result of taking a misstep in the right direction. Show me a person who has never made a mistake, and I’ll show you somebody who has never achieved much.”- sagot ni Inday nung sumabog ang microwave na ginamit nya.

And so the sosyalera, ingglesera maid has become the latest phenomenon in Philippine textdom. A Textus Addictus friend sends me daily doses of these Inday witticism and lessons in etiquette and social graces enough to embarrass and abase social climbing pseudo-journalists.

But then it isn’t just us Pinoys who are turning our fancy on maids with accents. Type french maid on Youtube, and voila! You get videos like this…

Birthday Tribute…

Posted by A Day In The Life... on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 5:20 am in Miscellaneous.

Kuya GermsI recently guested on QTV’s, “The Sweet Life” which is hosted by Lucy Torres-Gomez.  And if you were paying attention to my blog a few weeks back, you’d know that this is already my second appearance on that particular show.  The first one was when I came out with my little daughter and, frankly, she had most of the exposure then.  Haha!

This time around, I was invited to be part of German “Kuya Germs” Moreno’s surprise birthday celebration.  Kuya Germs’ 75th birthday is still on October, but the program was doing a series of advanced tapings and the “tribute” was one of them.

I was asked to bring a card for Kuya Germs, but I thought a birthday card too simple… too… ummm… common.  So, I decided to give him a personalized CD of all my recent compositions with a birthday message written on the side of the disc.  Why a disc filled with compositions, you ask?  Well, mainly because I never really would’ve realized my interest in music long ago had it not been for his show that I was a regular of:  “That’s Entertainment”.

150px-GMA_logo_1980That was where I actually honed my talent as a musician… I even, for a time, became a musical arranger for his weekly Sunday television program, “GMA Supershow”.

Anyways, I was called in on stage to surprise him and to share with televiewers some good memories I’ve had of Kuya Germs.

So, I went in… exchanged pleasantries and went on to present my “token”.  Before I handed the gift, I explained on-air why I opted to bring that particular present.  Then I continued to read the small message out loud in front of him (the text was small and considering his age, I was afraid to strain his eyes…)

The message read:

- Chuckie Dreyfus

And as I looked up at him to hand it over, he took it and wanted to speak to the mic… but he couldn’t.  His eyes were welling up.  He tried to speak but got choked up… he stopped and looked down… sobbing… silent.  I thought we were gonna cut.  But we continued to roll… silence all around… only his sniffing could be heard.

Then, short of breath… he spoke.  He told everyone how much he was proud of me… he gripped my hand so tight and still continued to choke up in tears.  I didn’t actually think I’d make that kind of an impact on him during that taping.  I had never made him cry like “that”… I mean, by myself… yet I did.

I cannot fully put into words how I truly felt during those minutes… But as much as I knew that the show’s episode was done for him… to pay tribute to his accomplishments in the industry… a celebration of his life… and in recognition of his importance in showbusiness… during that particular moment, it was I who felt important… and that everything I have achieved was all that mattered to him.

Happy birthday, Kuya Germs.

Thank you for everything… God bless you always…

Our Needs

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Wednesday, September 5th, 2007 @ 4:34 am in Personal - International.

I saw this meme over at Gloria's blog. I thought it was fun so I decided to give it a spin myself.

Here's what you need to do:
Go to www.google.com, write your name and the word “needs” in the text box and click the Goggle Search button. Just for fun, see what comes out of your search.

  • Leah needs to shed the pounds and the sooner the better. (Uh, I don't think so!)

  • Leah needs healing. (I desperately need to go to a spa!)

  • Leah needs a job topic. (Actually, I need lots for my project.)

  • Leah needs more training before she becomes the big star that she is GOING TO BE. (Pang-showbiz pala ako! :D )

  • Leah needs to raise more than $4000 to cover the cost of her trip. (Yeah, and we need it soon!)

  • Leah needs to change her lifestyle by incorporating regular involvement in physical activity. (I really do need a change of lifestyle. *sigh* )

  • Leah needs to watch herself on TV after she makes the rounds of the talk shows. (See, pang-showbiz nga ako! :D )

  • Leah needs to apply herself more. (Err, I don't exactly know where...)

  • Leah needs to dream. (I agree! But how, when I'm usually sleep-deprived?)

  • Leah needs a house now. (... of our own. Need I say more?)

  • Leah needs more sleep than she gets and can be a handful if she’s tired. ('Nuff said!)

I enjoyed doing the meme so much I googled J's needs as well.
J needs...

  • your votes again for most attractive man of the month.

  • an adoptive parent who will be patient with him.

  • a family that will provide structure

  • to put the personal s**t or feelings aside

  • support and encouragement to be successful

  • as much freedom as possible so he can continue to explore and push his own boundaries

Hmm, google's got some pretty hardcore and personal stuff there for J. Not as much fun as mine was.

Alright, your turn. Let me know if you did the meme and posted the results in your blog so that I can hop over to your site and see what you've come up with. Good luck!

Pfft.

I forgot to tag people for the previous meme. XP Edited the post with the tagged people, but will place them here as well for those who are too lazy to check the post. XDDD Tagging aqrn785, Toki, Kara, Jenn, and kaosuke. ^_^

I’m busy trying to get my stuff organized now. Ugh~ I badly need to burn. I’m trying to survive with only 1GB free space in my main drive. Two of my other hard disks are at 150MB and 60MB. ^^
