My Davao Impromptu Trip

Posted by "Travel blogging? Is that thing still around?" on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 9:55 pm in Personal - Philippines.

My sister, me and Blogie Robillo at a his friend's bar in Davao

Me and my sister visited the city of Davao a week ago and we would like to extend our appreciation to Mr. Blogie Robillo of Mindanao Bloggers and his friends for their hospitality. We talked everything about blogging, blogging personalities and the upcoming 1st Mindanao Bloggers Summit in Davao City. This trip is so memorable like our first visit exactly a year ago. Aside from the usual great sites that Davao has to offer, everyone is so helpful and accommodating, from the bellboy at the Marco Polo Hotel up to the barbecue vendor at Recto Street. I may not be physically present on October 27 for the summit because I’ll be in Iloilo for the November 1 long weekend but I will definitely be back in Davao in the near future.

I usually plan my trips at least a month in advance but this trip is different, we planned everything with my sister over the phone in less than an hour. I only got to purchase the plane tickets less than 36 hours before our intended departure. And for our hotel, I had to call the reservation agent in Davao directly. I'm thankful that at present is the lean season for domestic travel so the plane is not that full and the hotel occupancy rate is not that high.

Thank God I still have the travel brochures which I got last year...

Taking the Day Off

Posted by PinoyBlogero.com on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 9:39 pm in Technology, Miscellaneous.

[Warning: This is a rant post, sorry]

Only one more week until our school’s term break and the already-familiar struggle of students against tons of schoolworks, projects, and exams has finally began. Yep, Hell Week is once again upon Mapuans and PinoyBlogero is now experiencing a hard time juggling both his schoolwork and blogging tasks as always.

I didn’t get the chance to sleep last night and my body motors have been running for over 24+ hours already. Depression had already settled-in after being rejected by our professor to defend our Protoype Project this morning. My overall morale is on an all-time low and it took me exactly 30 minutes just to compose this post from the first paragraph up to this line. Puro wrong grammar pa! Damn.

Doc Tess told me to take some rest for me to replenish both my body’s energy and my creative juices.

@pinoyblogero: Sometimes, an emotional high diminishes our blogging abilities. Just take your time. [Doc Tess through Twitter]

I wonder why I am not following her advice right now. I should be at my dorm right now hitting the sack, but no, i choose to stay at the internet shop to waste money and stress myself even further. To think that I need to get back to school at 12 noon today for a Practical Exam on another one of my laboratory subjects!

Tsk, tsk. Bad Karlo, Bad…

Hmm… Sige na nga, uwi na ako! humph!

I’ll try to upload a post tomorrow if I can. Happy blogging!

The Ideas of Ayn Rand’s “Atlas Shrugged”, 50th Anniversary Exhibit

Posted by Prudence and Madness on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 9:15 pm in Personal - Philippines.

Author’s Note: I got this as an email because I’m subscribed to The Ayn Rand Institute media releases. And I’m posting this to encourage those who are within the vicinity or have the capacity to travel there to see the exhibit. As an Ayn Rand fan, it would have been my pleasure to see the stuff they have there. But circumstances does not allow me to

It was said that Ayn Rand’s book, Atlas Shrugged, is one of the most influential books ever written and only second to the Bible in scope of influence. However, personally, I think this is only because the Bible is taught in schools, sometimes forcibly, while not even many of the college students are familiar with the book, which is unfortunate. And in my personal life, her books placed more influence than that of the Bible. Her books are testaments to her advocacy for upholding reason above all. Those books changed me. I highly recommend it to anyone with an open and free mind. Ayn Rand books can be acquired easily from Fully Booked and Powerbooks stores.

IRVINE, Calif.–Ayn Rand’s novel “Atlas Shrugged” is the subject of a new exhibit to open on October 8, 2007, at the Frances Howard Goldwyn Hollywood Regional Library. Commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the novel’s publication, the exhibit is jointly sponsored by the Los Angeles Public Library and the Ayn Rand Institute, and is curated by Jeff Britting, archivist of the Ayn Rand Archives, a special collection of the Ayn Rand Institute. The exhibit will include a reception open to the public on the date of the novel’s fiftieth anniversary, October 10, 7 pm, as well as four public talks devoted to the ideas of “Atlas Shrugged” and their contemporary importance.

The exhibit–a sequel to the library’s 2006-07 exhibit on Ayn Rand’s time in Hollywood–titled “The Ideas of Ayn Rand’s ‘Atlas Shrugged,’” once again displays items from the Ayn Rand Archives, including rare and never-before-displayed reproductions of manuscript pages and notes from early drafts of the novel. Also on display will be original promotional materials produced by Random House, including a dollar-sign cigarette; an excerpt from Rand’s manuscript for a television miniseries written shortly before her death; and the cover artwork of historic and foreign editions. Portions of the exhibit text have been extracted from Mr. Britting’s illustrated biography, “Ayn Rand” (The Overlook Press, 2005).

In addition to the exhibit, the library will present, free of charge, four Saturday afternoon discussion sessions about the ideas of “Atlas Shrugged” and their relevance to today’s world. Hosted by Mr. Britting, this series will feature presentations by speakers from the Ayn Rand Institute:

* Oct. 20, 2007, at 3 pm: talk by Mr. Alex Epstein on Capitalism
* Nov. 3, 2007, at 3 pm: talk by Dr. Onkar Ghate on Morality
* Nov. 17, 2007, at 3 pm: talk by Mr. Elan Journo on Foreign Policy
* Dec. 8, 2007, at 3 pm: talk by Dr. Keith Lockitch on Environmentalism

In “Atlas Shrugged”, Ayn Rand wrote a philosophic mystery story that she said integrated metaphysics, politics, economics and sex. It also presented for the first time her original philosophic system, later called “Objectivism,” a philosophy advocating reason, rational selfishness and laissez-faire capitalism. The theme of “Atlas Shrugged” is “the role of the mind in man’s existence,” and the novel dramatizes what would happen to the world if the creators withdrew their works. “Atlas Shrugged” became an immediate best-seller, but was so vilified by critics and academics at the time that Ayn Rand realized she would have to become a full-time philosopher in order to defend and spread the philosophy that made her fictional heroes possible.

“Atlas Shrugged” ranks as one of the most influential books of all time, ranking second only to the Bible in a 1991 survey by the Library of Congress. Selling more copies than ever before, it is studied every year by thousands of students and is regularly cited by businessmen, athletes, scholars and politicians as a book that changed their lives. Even though it was written a half-century ago, the ideas in “Atlas Shrugged” are still profoundly relevant to the moral, cultural and political issues we face today. As Ayn Rand herself explained: “My attitude toward my writing is best expressed by a statement of Victor Hugo: ‘If a writer wrote merely for his time, I would have to break my pen and throw it away.’”

The exhibit at the Frances Howard Goldwyn Hollywood Regional Library runs through December 11.

US Visa Updates

Posted by AngTherapist.com on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 9:15 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

The New York Times has reported that about 300,000 applications were filed by skilled workers and professionals from July 1 to August 17, 2007. This figure was extremely high compared to a monthly average of 54,700 applications filed before July.

The dramatic increase was due to the increase of filing fees effective July 30, 2007 and the reversal of the USCIS July 2 memo rejecting adjustment of status applications whose priority dates were current under the July 2007 visa bulletin.

While the adjustment applicants may be entitled to interim benefits such as employment authorization, the high volume of applications will certainly prolong their wait time for their green cards due to the annual limits imposed by law on the preference categories.

Three hundred thousand is a massive figure alright. It just goes to show that the United States is still the ultimate destination for most migrants. But looking at the huge backlog because of this increase, why don’t applicants try to explore and consider other first world countries to migrate to and save themselves a lot of time? Just my two cents.

Radio keeps Spanish language alive in former colony

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture, and Inspiration on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 8:21 pm in Entertainment.

MANILA (AFP) — Despite 400 years as a colony of Spain, the Philippines has retained little trace of the language but producers of the country's only Spanish-language radio programme says that's about to change.

"Filipinas Ahora Mismo" -- which loosely translated means "Philippines Right Now" -- features book and movie reviews, information on the Spanish influence in different parts of the country and music by modern stars such as Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin, all in Spanish.

It is just a small step but its producers hope the show can help lead a revival in a language that has withered away in most of the Southeast Asian archipelago nation.

"It is not a question of making Filipinos speak Spanish again," says Spanish ambassador Luis Arias Romero. "It is a question of making Filipinos aware of the importance of Spanish in culture and world affairs."

The radio show, sponsored by the Cadiz Press Association, is part of this effort although the project's manager Chaco Molina concedes they still have a long way to go.Camille Tan (L) and co-host Theresa Jose tape their Spanish-language radio show

Molina said when the Cadiz association first proposed the plan, they suggested an eight-hour radio show. "I told them that was too ambitious. This isn't Guatemala where everyone speaks Spanish," he said.

The show, hosted by veteran Filipino broadcaster Bon Vivar, airs from 7-8pm (1100-1200 GMT) Monday to Friday on government-owned DZRM radio at 1278 kHz in Manila and in simulcast to several major cities.

"I see a renaissance of the Spanish language in the Philippines," says Molina, adding the show is aiming at a young audience who will be more receptive to the language.

What surprises Spaniards who come to the Philippines is the fact that their language has virtually disappeared.

The archipelago was first colonised by the Spanish in the early 16th century shortly after Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the islands and later died here in 1521.

Spanish culture permeates the country where 80 percent of the population are followers of a Spanish-styled Roman Catholicism and where 20,000 Spanish words have been absorbed into most of the local dialects.

Even today, Filipinos eat paella, menudo and chorizo, have brazo de Mercedes and turrones for dessert and drink San Miguel Beer and Fundador Brandy.

But when the Philippines passed from Spanish to American control after the Spanish-American war of 1898, English completely supplanted Spanish.

Today, most Filipinos speak and read English.

The most serious blow came in 1987 when the government removed Spanish as one of the official national languages of the country and did away with a requirement that college students take courses in Spanish.Theresa Jose (R) and co-host Camille Tan (L)

Jose Rodriguez, local director of Instituto Cervantes, the Spanish cultural center, notes that ironically, only one Philippine university now offers a doctoral course in Spanish compared to 12 universities in South Korea and 10 in Japan.

Rodriguez says there is no updated figure on how many Filipinos can actually speak Spanish although Molina says a study in the 1990s found one out of eight Filipinos could understand some Spanish.

Molina says the Spanish language was never as widespread in the Philippines as in Latin America.

Christian missionaries who came to the Philippines found it easier to learn the local dialects to preach to the natives rather than teaching them Spanish.

Spanish was limited to a small intellectual and social elite while local languages like Tagalog and Cebuano continued to thrive under Spanish colonial rule.

In contrast, the American occupation implemented a vigorous public education system with English as the medium. Decades of American movies, pop music and publications further strengthened the language's presence.

Help for Baby Hannah

Posted by on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 7:59 pm in Personal - International.

Yesterday, I received this letter from a fellow egroup member. It was about her friends’ newborn baby who was diagnosed to have Ondine’s Curse (or in technical terms Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome). Anyway, read on.

I am writing in behalf of my friends Joan & Carlo. They are former w@wies.

Joan gave birth to a baby girl last August 14 at Asian Hospital via CS. Her name is Hannah Ysabelle. When she was born, her lungs were full of mucus and she was diagnosed with pneumonia. Her pneumonia was treated already, but she still had difficulty breathing, she has to use a ventilator so she can breathe.

After some more tests, the doctors eventually found out that she has Congenital Central Hypoventilation Syndrome. It is also known as Ondine’s Curse. In simple terms, nalilimutan nya huminga (she forgets to breathe). When Hannah is awake she’s having a hard time breathing, and when she’s asleep she’s not breathing at all. This disease is a lifelong disease and has no cure. And Hannah might be the first case in the Philippines .

So that Hannah can breathe, she has an intubator (tube inserted through her mouth) till last week. She had an operation called tracheostomy wherein an incision was made on her neck so that the tube can pass through there instead of through the mouth. When she was in the intubator, another tube is inserted through her mouth for her milk. Now that there’s no more tube on her mouth, she can now drink using a bottle.

After Hannah’s operation has healed, Joan and Carlo will be transferring her to Las Pinas Doctors Hospital anytime this week. Because in Asian, their daily expenses is around 20k/day, in LPDH its aound 6k/day. She has to stay in the hospital because she has to use a ventilator. A home ventilator for newborns in the Philippines costs around P1.5M.

Now, their bill in Asian Hospital is more than half a million already. This still excludes the payment for the CS (which was paid already), and the doctors PF (Hannah has 8 doctors).

With all the bills they have to pay, and other expenses that will come in the future, Joan and Carlo are now asking for donations. They’ve wiped out all their savings. They’ve written letters to institutions asking for help/assistance. They also requested if they can put tin cans in stores wherein people can put donations. If ever you see those tin cans around, please give a little bit of help.

Please also include them in your prayers. They really need all the help they can get.

It is heartwrenching! I am a mom myself and for some reason, whenever I see or hear babies suffering like this, I feel like crying. Maybe it is because I always put myself in their parents’ shoes as we have a little girl of our own as well. In other words, it is so easy to relate!

Another e-group member suggested that the parents should put up a website or blog especially for this so that other people may know about it and that they can ask for more donations. I think that is an excellent idea. But at this point, I think a third party must organize that as the parents are so busy taking care of Hannah. J naman suggested approaching the TV stations and have their case featured on air. I know lots of similar cases have done this and have been successful at raising funds. Also, it is good way of checking if all is legal and true and is not just one of those scams.

Okay, if you want to help this couple out, just go to their friend’s blog for more information. You can also help spread the word about baby Hannah by posting her case in your blog.

Are you a ‘postie’ yet?

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 7:36 pm in Personal - International.

Yes, that's what they call us Pay Per Post publishers -- posties. And being one, so far, has been rewarding. However, to allow me to get more of those higher priced opportunities, I have to improve on some of my blog statistics.

Aside from getting a higher page rank, I really do need to also work on traffic generation, as this blog's pretty young as compared to others. Sounds very difficult, I know, but basically it just means driving more people to visit your site.

Alright, no pressures here. The day I'll be a 'super postie' shall soon come. I just need to be a little more patient. :)

Enrique Iglesias, Isabel Preysler and the Filipino Identity

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture, and Inspiration on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 8:39 am in Entertainment.

So I watched the TV Española 2-part special on her "Hormigas Blancas", and I thought it was fantastic. I think many Filipinos, since I debuted her on my other celebrity site a few years (which until then, most didn't have a single idea that Enrique Iglesias' mom is Filipina) have a rather distorted viewpoint on her life, reflecting their being raised in Filipino movies which espouse a "mestizo elegance" lifestyle in which they, the public, and even the tv networks assume that affluent Filipinos walk around in luxurious silk bathrobes all the time, lounge around the pool drinking wine, and bossing their servidumbre around.

But of course that's not reality, Filipinos born in the middle to upper class still have to work hard for what they have, if that lifestyle in the movies were true where they were just lying around all the time, then for sure, the money would be gone in a second because they didn't have to time to work because they were too busy lounging around! Many Filipinos assume that Filipinos who migrated to Spain (like Junior Morales, and Isabel Preysler) speak only Spanish and don't know how to speak Tagalog, even if they grew up in the Philippines, and that's a ridiculous notion, stereotype, and belief, because you cannot be born and raised in the Philippines, talk to your neighbors and childhood friends, and attend Philippine schools by just speaking Spanish, of course they speak Tagalog. I do know that Isabel Preysler has hired Filipino women to be the yaya of her kids in Spain, and many members of her staff are Filipino, and Enrique Iglesias has said that he always heard Tagalog being spoken around the house growing up.

This assumption comes from the assumption that the Filipino identity is completely separate from the Latin/Spanish identity, forgetting that the Spanish identity has already been incorporated in the national Filipino identity along with the Malay elements, molding into one unifying culture - the Filipino culture.

Many Filipinos are also saying that Isabel Preysler is not Filipina, she's actually of pure Spanish blood, and that's not true either, and you only have to take one glance at her beautiful face and almond-shaped eyes to see that. Also, the Perez de Tagle family from which her father, Carlos Preysler, is descended from, are not of pure Spanish descent. Also, the fact that castizos could pass for white back in the days of colonial rule also completely slip over the heads of many Filipinos, for the simple fact that most Filipinos due to the incomplete education given in the Philippines about the Spanish period, don't even know what a castizo is, and didn't understand the dynamics of the social strata in Spanish colonies. Just to recap, during Spanish days, if your indigenous (Native American blood in Latin America, Malay blood in the Philippines) was 1/4 or less, you were categorized as a castizo filipino and could purchase a document from the Spanish crown to declare you as a pure white. This was a policy that happened all over the Americas in the Spanish colonies, and it was not any different in the Philippines. So many of the "pure" Spaniards in the Philippines or Latin America many times were not as "pure" as you might assume, because if you had enough money and social status during those times, it was very easy to declare yourself as white, which many people did as those were the norms of the day during the colonial period.

Isabel Preysler does speak Tagalog and English, and I know this because I've spoken personally to her in person before, and she is the nicest person you will ever meet. She's a true Filipina woman, and she always represents our country to the highest degree in Spain.

Filipinos also should stop referring to her as a Spanish mestiza, because even if she is, that doesn't make her special or unique or anything because a lot of our people are Spanish mestizos, not just among the rich because there is a lot of untraced Spanish ancestry in Spanish colonies due to the way things were, but that does not take away from the fact that she's a Filipina. In fact, it's politically incorrect to continue to use words like "mestizo", "mulato", and other terms from the colonial period that refer to race in Spanish-speaking society, because everyone is trying to look past race now. So when I see Filipinos are still doing it, I'm okay with it because I understand that they don't speak Spanish and so they're not so attuned as to the cultural norms of a completely different society than what they're familiar with (the Spanish-speaking world in comparison to the English-speaking Anglo world that Filipinos are more familiar with, and obsessed with), but it still makes me cringe, partly because it's socially unacceptable and antiquated to continue to use the word mestizo colloquially, partly because of the lack of pride in being Filipino that they feel that calling someone a "Spanish mestizo" or an "American mestizo" instead of a Filipino sounds better or makes them a better person. Because don't they realize that everytime you refer to a Filipino person as a "Spanish mestizo/a" instead of simply as a Filipino, you're doing something detrimental to our national pride and our representation in the world as Filipinos? Of course they don't, because in the isolated society of our beloved Philippines, being a Spanish mestizo is better than being a "pure Filipino", which doesn't make sense again because the Filipino race doesn't exist, the Malay race exists, but Filipino is not a race, it's a nationality.

I just know that there are a lot of stereotypes in the Philippines that need to be erased, such as: Mestizos are Rich, Chinese are Rich, Filipino-Americans are all rich, Filipino-Americans are all snobby and mayabang (conceited), and finally, celebrities of Filipino descent (Enrique Iglesias, etc.) are not proud of their heritage. These are detrimental to our national pride and we need to stop all of this miseducation among our people.

The Filipino people do exist though, and we should some more pride in our nationality that we stop downplaying Filipino heritage in favor of European heritage. Anyways, the Filipino heritage has already infused with Spanish/European heritage, so to continue to refer to a Filipino person as a "Spanish mestizo" as if it was something special is redundant in itself, because many of us Filipinos are Spanish mestizos, but our nationality and identity are as Filipinos. In the Spanish-speaking world, nationality is not defined by race. In the United States, your race has everything to do with your nationality. Filipinos have been shoved down their throat American cultural norms that have supplanted our original ideas of nationalism that were built on a Spanish-influenced society and norms, and this is what contributes to the problem.

So this was my latest revision, someone keeps changing her second apellido to Arrástia, which is incorrect, it's Arrástria. Also, someone keeps saying she comes from a Spanish-Filipino family, which is redundant and not doing anything to promote Filipino pride, because remember, even if a Filipino is of Spanish descent, he still a Filipino because that's his nationality and his country. Many Filipinos don't understand this and always view Spanish as a separate "race" than Filipino, forgetting that Filipino is not a race, it's a nationality, and the two are many times one in the same (as in part of the same person, a Filipino of Malay/Spanish descent, like many of us are).

Isabel Preysler Arrástria (born February 18, 1951 in Manila, Philippines) is a Filipina journalist, model and former TV talk show host in Madrid, Spain. She is known in the Spanish press as "La Reina de Corazones" (the Queen of Hearts) ever since a best-selling biography by the same name was published about her. She is the mother of international pop superstar Enrique Iglesias, Julio José Iglesias, Chabeli Iglesias, Tamara Falcó and Ana Boyer.

Preysler was born in the middle-class neighborhood of San Lorenzo, Manila, Philippines, the third of six children to a middle-class Filipino family. She attended the Colegio de Monjas de la Asuncion, a private Catholic school. Due to her good behaviour, she was often selected to represent the Virgin Mary in the local Christmas parades.

Her nickname as a child was "Chabeli", which would later be the nickname of her first child. According to the book "Reina de Corazones" by Paloma Barrientos, she dated Gregorio Araneta, Charlie Lopez, and Bobby Santos, among others, as a teenager.[1] Her older brother Enrique died in Hong Kong due to a heroine overdose. She named her second son Enrique Iglesias, in honor of her deceased brother. Joaquin, her second oldest brother, also had problems with drugs, but overcame them and now lives in Canada.

During her youth, Isabel participated in a charity beauty pageant for the Sheraton Hotel in Manila and was crowned queen. Jun Ikalav, a playboy with a bad reputation, started dating Isabel. This worried her parents, and at the age of 18, she was sent to live in Madrid with her uncle and aunt to study at Mary Ward College, an Irish Catholic university in Spain, where she studied Accounting. It was at a party in 1970 that she was introduced to a family friend by the name of Julio Iglesias, who at the time was not yet a famous singer. The couple had their wedding just seven months later and were married for seven years, during which time they had three children, Chabeli, Julio Jr. and Enrique. In accordance with their rising careers, Julio as a singer, and Isabel as a model in Spain and Europe, they exploded onto the scene in 1971 and became overnight superstars in Spain and Latin America.

Following their divorce in 1978, Isabel launched her own career as a journalist for Spanish magazine ¡Hola! and her first interviewee was Julio himself. She also interviewed Richard Chamberlain. She married the Marquis de Grignon, Carlos Falcó, on 23 March 1980, a short-lived marriage resulted in the birth of a second daughter, Tamara. She later married former Spanish finance minister, Miguel Boyer, with whom she has another daughter, Ana. This marriage symbolized for critics the alliance of the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers Party, part of the leftist opposition to Francisco Franco, and to the "beautiful people" (aristocracy and bourgeoisie).

Often dubbed "La Perla de Manila" by the Spanish media ("The Pearl of Manila"), readers at Hola magazine have voted Isabel as the most elegant and best-dressed woman in Spain for 1991, 2002, and 2004, and she has consistently topped the best-dressed lists over the years in various Spanish magazines.

In 1984, she hosted the Spanish lifestyle TV programme, "Hoy." She has been chosen by several companies to be an image sponsor for their products, including Ferrero Rocher, Suárez jewelery, and, most notably, the Spanish tile company, Porcelanosa.

In 1987, her two sisters moved to Spain with their families to be closer to Isabel.

Her father, Carlos Preysler, has passed away. Her mother, Beatriz Preysler, still lives in Manila where Isabel is known to visit frequently with her children. She is close friends with Maurice Arcache, a local Philippine journalist and socialite. She frequents social events in Manila, including events hosted by the Spanish Embassy of the Philippines. She is also friends with Miriam Quiambao, Miss Philippines-Universe 1999, ever since they met at a party hosted by the Philippine Daily Inquire, a national newspaper, and with fellow Filipina and acclaimed fashion designer Monique Lhuillier, who she met in Los Angeles during a trip. She is known to wear Lhullier gowns at social events in Spain.

In May 2001, she was Prince Charles' guest of honour for the opening of his Spanish Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in England. She was his guest of honor again in 2005 at a garden party during a trip to Spain by the Royal Crown.

In 2004, the became Spain's welcoming host for David and Victoria Beckham when she hosted a welcoming party at her house for the celebrity couple. She became close friends with Victoria and was often photographed shopping with her during their stay in Madrid. [2]

Most recently she launched her official website at the suggestion of her son Enrique, who is one of her biggest fans. She continues to be the national spokesmodel for Ferrero Rocher, Suárez jewelery, and Porcelanosa, for which American actor George Clooney recently joined her in Fall 2006 to represent the brand in a new advertising campaign. [3]

As Enrique points she is noted for conserving her beauty in spite of her age. She, her family, and her home are frequent presences in Spanish magazines. She also helps participate in events for the Philippine Embassy in Madrid.

Vanessa Hudgens posed nude for Disney star

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture, and Inspiration on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 8:21 am in Entertainment.

There has been a little bit of buzz about High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgen's nude photos, but I think she handled it well. And anyway, Jesus Christ, we can't all live up to a cookie-cutter image, we're all human beings and we've all done naughty things in our life as young people and with our friends - I know I have, but that's a different story.

You rule Vanessa Hudgens, and the world believes in you, and I have even more respect for you now than I ever did before, because now you actually seem more a real human being now, instead of some privileged pretty girl, because you were honest to the public and allowed us to see your human side.

Your Filipino people still support you, because you've always been proud of your heritage and people. Mabuhay!

Hudgens Photo: Career Wrecker or Enhancer?

'Musical' Star Photo Could Be a Boon

By BLAIR SODEN

Sept. 11, 2007 —

In her latest role, actress Vanessa Hudgens has attracted a whole new audience to "High School Musical 2."

The actress admitted last week to posing nude in a photograph, apologized and is now hoping she didn't just ruin her chances to continue with the multimillion-dollar "High School Musical" franchise. It's not the slip-up that has Hollywood talking, it's the way the 18-year-old handled it that's earning her praises and may have just catapulted her career to the next level.

It was something that was never meant to become public. A series of photos of a young Hudgens sans clothing in a bathroom spread across the Internet last week.

"This was a photo, which was taken privately," said a statement from Hudgens' publicist. "It is a personal matter and it is unfortunate that this has become public."

But, according to a new report from an anonymous source in People magazine, the photo was meant for someone.

That someone is Drake Bell, a 19-year-old actor who is currently starring in "Drake and Josh" on Nickelodeon. Hudgens reportedly sent the photos to Bell two years ago as an admiring fan before she was famous. Bell's representative, Jill Fritzo, said her client was unaware of the photos.

"Drake says he never received those photos," Fritzo told People.

Like current boyfriend and "High School Musical 2" co-star Zac Efron, Hudgens has worked professionally with Bell. She played his girlfriend on an episode of "Drake and Josh" in 2006, but unlike the relationship with Efron, sparks didn't fly in real life.

Will Nude Pics Help or Hurt Hudgens?

Despite the initial onslaught of negative publicity, will Hudgens' career actually benefit from this controversy?

The general consensus in Hollywood seems to think, if anything, the photos will give Hudgens' career a boost.

Celebrity representative Michael Levine said it's unlikely these photos will do any lasting damage. Levine, who's represented hundreds of celebs, said in this day and age, nude photos aren't all that scandalous.

"If the photos weren't too explicit and there's no crime involved I don't think it will hurt her career," said Levine.

Bill Bohl, a Hollywood agent and owner of DDO Artists Agency in Los Angeles, agrees. "I don't believe this will hurt Vanessa's career at all," said Bohl. "She made a wrong choice and has been honest about it and now she

can move forward with some insight on how important her choices are."

The Disney Channel seems to agree, giving the starlet a second chance. Disney would not comment early on, giving Hudgens room to apologize to her fans she did in a statement Friday.

"I want to apologize to my fans, whose support and trust means the world to me. I am embarrassed over this situation and regret having ever taken these photos. I am thankful for the support of my family and friends," read the statement released by Hudgens' representative. Disney then responded.

"Vanessa has apologized for what was obviously a lapse in judgment. We hope she's learned a valuable lesson," read the statement.

But in the world of young celebrities, the "High School Musical 2" star's slip-up isn't all that damning.

Young Stars Find Wholesome Expectations Difficult to Uphold

Hudgens isn't the first teen star to fall from grace. For an increasing number of young, troubled celebrities, an acting career is often followed by a rap sheet.

Lindsay Lohan may be the most notorious of child actors gone wild. The 21-year-old, known more for her arrest record and stints in rehab than her filmography, kicked off her career at age 12 in Disney's 1998 remake of "The Parent Trap." Lohan quickly became a "tween" sensation, and like several child stars before her, her career and personal life quickly spiraled downward. Now, after two arrests and months in rehab, Lohan seems to have publicly come to terms with her drug and alcohol addiction.

"It is clear to me that my life has become completely unmanageable because I am addicted to alcohol and drugs," Lohan said in a statement in August.

But Hudgens' scandal isn't quite on the level of Lohan's problems, said Bohl. "I don't think you can compare Vanessa to Lindsay," said Bohl. "Vanessa made a poor choice and has come clean with it and she has been honest. That in itself is something to be admired."

When it comes down to it, these actors are just kids who are prone to blunders; how they handle their mistakes can make or break a career.

"Young people in general make wrong choices and have to deal with the consequences. The only difference is that Vanessa has to do it in front of the press," said Bohl. "Lindsay on the other hand, well we all know that she has not been as quick to take responsibility for her own actions."

Will Hudgens Be Going Back to 'High School'?

Hudgens and the rest of the "High School Musical" series cast are reportedly in talks with Disney for a third film to be featured on the big screen. But will Hudgens attend senior year at East High? When asked about contract negotiations for Hudgens, Disney would not comment.

"Disney does not comment on negotiations with talent," said Patti McTeague, senior vice president of kids' communications for Disney.

Hudgens did the right thing in confessing, from a public-relations perspective. Decreasing controversy and speculation may have saved her career.

"It is respectable to see a young star these days say, 'I made a mistake and I'm sorry,'" said Bohl. "If she spins this right, she can be an example to her young fans about being responsible and thinking about the consequences of their actions."

Levine agrees.

"It's a good idea to get out in front of the problem," said Levine. "The faster you respond, the less obnoxious the problem is."

But will Disney agree? Bohl seems to think so.

"I don't believe her 'High School Musical' career is over," said Bohl. "After last night's Britney Video Music Awards fiasco no one is talking about Vanessa."

Despite the amount of negative press child actors receive, there are still a cast of successful young stars who have managed to keep out of trouble.

Actresses like Hillary Duff and Christy Carlson Romano have become poster children for admiring fans, but have had difficulty getting roles as adults. For Hudgens, the opposite is true. Perhaps she will have a different outcome. Her career could have just graduated from "High School" to Hollywood.

Things Needed for POEA Clearance for Direct Hires

Posted by Rey Ian's Personal Blog レイイアンコープズのブログ on Thursday, September 13th, 2007 @ 8:20 am in Personal - Philippines.

This is definitely clear. If you are a direct-hire, meaning you were able to secure a work from a foreign employer without obtaining an agency, you still need to obtain a
