Pinoy Blogosphere Weekend Recap (09/16/07)

Pinoy blogosphere weekend recap

This week is one of the most tiring days of my student blogging life thanks to the impending arrival of finals week. It’s nice to know the Pinoy blogosphere is still having fun without me. Sniff. Here’s a recap of the latest news and interesting posts in the Pinoy blogosphere throughout the whole week:

  • The recent verdict on the Joseph Estrada “Erap” trial has caused quite a stir on a number of political blogs in the Pinoy blogosphere. Here are some interesting reads on the said issue:
The Erap Plunder Trial: A Recap of the Coverage by The Jester-in-Exile, Law Student Par Excellence (heh, he wishes)
A Guilty Verdict For Erap Is Bad For All Corrupt Officials
A trap of his own making
  • Coy from Cokskiblue has uncovered yet another click fraud invitation that is less blatant than the one I exposed here in PinoyBlogero. Instead of asking for clicks through link-baiting, the said scam targets unsuspecting users of Friendster.  Check out the post here.
  • Blogger.com has just recently released Blogger Play, which is a new feature that automatically collects pictures that are posted on blogpost blogs and shows it to others through a slideshow that is updated in real-time.
  • Paolo Mendoza from PaoloMendoza.com shifts his blog’s focus and concentrated on talking about “making munnies online”. Yep, the Philosophical Bastard is now teaching everyone how they could earn money through their blogs. Expect a different approach on the world of money making.
  • Yatot from RandomThoughtsofMe says that one of the popular things to do in the blogosphere today is to stir things up with a little controversy. What he did was he listed down ten Pinoy bloggers and ranted about the things he doesn’t like about them and attacked them one by one! LOL!
  • An interesting piece of writing about the latest gaming fad, Defense of the Ancients (DotA) had been circulating the net lately. The said write-up claims that DotA is devil worship and playing it is like defying God. The author made some word association to make the game seem evil and even a true-to-life testimonial of a boy who was saved from the evils of it. Myk from Lee Flailmarch has stumbled upon the said article and shares his thoughts about it.
  • Pinay Wordpress themes designer, Beng Hafner from the blog Kauderwelsch, was accused of stealing graphics that she used on one of her themes. I saw both their works and they are almost exactly similar to each other. Find out the difference by checking out their blogs.
  • Users hosted under Philhosting.net are frustrated over the number of downtimes that their servers are experiencing over the past weeks. Allen from Silkenhut.com exclaims, “Their tagline, ‘Affordable Solutions for everyone’, true… but what about reliability?!” I had the same problem when I was still hosted under them just weeks ago, the downtimes were a threat to my blog, which is why I decided to look for a new webhost. Philhosting.net, what is happening to you?

Jpepa draws fire from senators

Posted by PHILIPPINE NURSE on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 9:29 pm in Miscellaneous.

Under the Jpepa, only 400 Filipino nurses and 600 caregivers would be allowed into Japan in the first two years, subject to re-negotiation thereafter. Filipino nurses and caregivers would also have to undergo a six-month language training. The professional association of Japanese nurses lobbied hard to restrict the entry of Filipino nurses.

Total Lost Revenues from JPEPA Could Pay for Salaries of RP Nurses

The Philippine government could actually keep Filipino nurses from going abroad by utilizing revenues it would otherwise have foregone under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA).

The average monthly salary of a nurse in the public sector is some P10, 000 ($215.98 at an exchange rate of $1=P46.30). The government employs around 20,000 nurses. Even if the salaries of these nurses are increased to P50,000 ($1,079), it would only cost the government P1 billion ($21,598,272).

With a journal and a camera as travel companions, we hope to document our memories and experiences that are sometimes missed or forgotten. With Food Trip, you will experience a truly rewarding tour of Bulacan and Pampanga as you learn to cherish each memory with your own words and photographs.

A treat to every Filipino foodie
Where else can we enjoy a culinary feast but in Bulacan and Pampanga, known as the food capitals of the country? Situated in Central Luzon, they boast of their culinary treasures. Bulakeños and Pampanguenos take pride in their cuisines and recipes that have been handed down by their forefathers. Since both are agricultural provinces, the ingredients of their dishes are readily available.

Relive the history and capture the flavors as we explore Bulacan and Pampanga’s culinary secrets–from their daily fares to fancy main dishes; sample sugary desserts, varied dipping sauces, and native delicacies.

A treat to all aspiring food photographers and writers
Give your personal scrapbook a new twist or better yet, bring your writing and photography skills to a higher level by getting published. The best articles and photographs will be featured in Yummy magazine, a Summit Media publication.

Emergency @ Home

Posted by A Day In The Life... on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 12:20 pm in Miscellaneous.

It’s been a while since I last posted… give or take a few days.  2 nights ago, my little boy got into an accident at home while I was away taking my wife to work.

WappyApparently, he was taking a bath and he stooped down to soap his feet.  What he didn’t realize was that he was too close to the wall and the soap dish’s water drain (a little pointed spout) was just above him.  This wasn’t the type of soap holder that’s usually seen with 2 suction caps sticking to the wall.  This one was ceramic and installed “into” the wall.

After soaping up his legs and feet, he stood up… so quick that he didn’t realize how close he was to the pointed object.  BUMP!!!  Right on the top of his noggin!

And as with all head cuts, these usually tend to be very bloody.  So, with all the water from his hair that came from the shower together with the gush of blood from his injury, it flowed all over his face… and down his body.

According to my dad (who was at my place and saw the incident), my little girl was freaking out and crying… scared and filled with concern that her big brother’s condition might get worse.  So, they immediately applied first aid, they cut the hair around the affected area and placed medication for the wound.  They called me up as well as my wife via cellphone… I was on my way home then and my misis just arrived at work.

I rushed home and checked if everything was ok… the situation was handled competently and my little boy was already getting ready for bed.  A few minutes after I arrived, I got a text message from my wife informing me that she was told  (ordered, actually) to head back home due to what had just happened.

Next day we took our kid to the hospital to have his wound cleaned properly and for a routine checkup just so we know that “we’re in the clear” with regards to complications that may arise due to the sensitive area wherein my boy had been hit.

He underwent a “skull series” to make sure there were no fractures (Thank, God!).

I just hope it doesn’t happen again… although we know that accidents ARE indeed accidents.  They occur unexpectedly.  But to the best of our abilities, we can somehow minimize the probabilities by taking all necessary precautions and preparations.

Puyatan na naman

Posted by Batang Yagit on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 12:04 pm in Personal - Philippines.

My puyatan buddies. My super loyal Naomi and a cup of coffee.

Isang gabing puyatan na naman ito. It's 12:50 a.m. now and I'm still awake. My tired body must work beyond its capacity. Hahahaha.

I had a very tiring day. I woke up from the voice of my little cousin early this morning. I only had a few hours sleep and after much efforts, my body forgot the urge to get more sleep. It was the reason why I left home late this afternoon. I went to school to work on our report tomorrow and to work on Kalasag's campaign for this week. Multi-tasking na ito. Thanks to my groupmates for giving consideration in understanding my semi-absence in working for our report.

After school, I went to the hospital to visit my cousin who was admitted yesterday for a swelling gums. She had a bad tooth which made a complication and resulted to the swelling of her gums. I did not stay long in the hospital coz I was forced to leave my laptop and the rest of my tech stuff at the guard's desks and I have to get my stuff before 9pm. I didn't know they would not allow it inside the hospital even if I am not going to use it.

I was so hungry that I decided after leaving the hospital to dine at Ilustre. I had a lechon paksiw which was quite spicy yet nice. The price was also reasonable.

After eating my meal, I went to the gym only to find out that they close at 9pm every Sundays. I did a few minute warm-up on the thread mill and did arm curls and arm extensions. I didn't finish my program. Babawi na lang ako bukas kasi magsasara na ang gym.

So these are the things which kept me busy the whole day. What about tonight? I downloaded few episodes of the Korean drama 'Coffee Prince' which was recommended to me by Andi. The series was really funny. I'm still on the 3rd episode and I'm still trying to complete the series.

Another thing is my thesis. I need to finish the 4th and 5th chapters of our research. I still got no copy of the survey results that I asked from my groupmate. Another is the Smart Pala-ECE-pan review for we have to study concepts about GSM, GPRS, CDMA, etc. I'm not interested in this competition but I have no choice but to comply since this wil be considered as one quiz for us.

Kaya Restaurant

Posted by Rey Ian's Personal Blog レイイアンコープズのブログ on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 11:23 am in Personal - Philippines.

Eating at Kaya Restaurant along Jupiter street is relaxing and a taste of authentic Korean dishes. It was third time to eat at Kaya but it was my first time to eat grilled beef tongue. Grilled tongue is very delicious. Everything is served with kimchi, kimchi and more kimchi. I can't resist the smell of kimchi. The perfect blend of salty and spicy taste keeps me from eating more and more kimchi. Aside from having a fiber-rich composition, this is also rich in amino acids that is good for the body. Mung beans, bean sprouts, sweet-spicy dried and deep-fried anchovies are also served. A perfect combination of overflowing hot green tea is a great match for this meaty night. Aside from beef, we also order pork cutlets and a plate of raw beef with raw egg on top of turnips-like vegetable. Also Korean rice tastes like Japanese rice. It was very satisfying. After the dinner, a bowl of cinnamon and pineapple-based drink was served and a slice of pineapples was served as a complement to our hearty dinner. The best part of all was that it was our boss' treat. 御馳走様でした!

Audio Visual Presentations

Posted by Rey Ian's Personal Blog レイイアンコープズのブログ on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 9:54 am in Personal - Philippines.

Doing audio visual presentations along with the proper tools and equipment for a visual presentation are crucial for its success. When presenting with a very huge crowd, the size of the text should be big enough to see the people especially at the back side of the room. It is also important to emphasize color contrasts. It means that when the background exhibits a light or bright color, the foreground text color should be dark so that it is readable. Text and image sizes should also be proportion with each other. The bigger the text and image, the better. One paragraph or bullet of a presentation may represent single or two images within the slide. In creating presentation layouts, it is also important that simple but well designed templates must be used. Don't make it too dry to look dull but not too much with so many overlapping elements as audience will be distracted. In presenting ideas and opinions, do not present so many text within a paragraph. Present only what is important and as a presenter, should explain and further elaborate the items in the bullets or the several sentences within the paragraph. The presentation material should not be the one who will explain but the presenter itself. Sometimes, a graph or diagram displayed in the presentation explains the entirety of the presentation. It is also good to place more readable and presentable graphs and pictographs in the presentation. The audio visual presentation is just a tool to help your audience understand what should be conveyed. Appropriate audio visual projectors should have the appropriate ANSI-LUMENS requirement depending on the size of the room and the natural illumination within the room. The higher ANSI-LUMENS of the projector, the better. The higher the resolution of the presentation media tool like a projector or flat-screen television will determine the quality and success of the presentation.

The darker the room, the better the presentation since the readers can clearly see the text and images within the slide. Sound effects can also a good catch for sleepy readers but do not add sounds to every transition of each text displayed since it will sound funny. Slide transitions are also important as it will give quality and emphasis on the actual presentation. Audible sound within the room is important as the speaker explains about the presentation. The sound quality will add viewer attention to the speaker further as catching attention along with the quality of the sound heard are related.

TV Streaming on Cellphone

Posted by Rey Ian's Personal Blog レイイアンコープズのブログ on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 9:39 am in Personal - Philippines.

Smart Communications recently launched its MyTV for their Nokia N-series cellphones. I find this so amazing that the offer for the time being, the service is unlimited, even for pre-paid subscribers. You can view your favorite TV shows on your 3G cellular phone. TV channels like Cartoon Network, Entertainment Central, Jack TV, Pinoy Box Office, MTV, CNN, Basketball TV, Solar Sports, PBA, The History Channel and The National Geographic Channel are only available. But despite the limited channels you can view, can't you imagine that now, that you are able to view your favorite channels in your cellphone that was just a fantasy a decade ago? Indeed.

But with this cellphone model we found at 1 Esplanade, do you want to own this? Hahaha. This would probably measure 21" across. Cool for video streaming and viewing, right?

Subway Meal

Posted by Rey Ian's Personal Blog レイイアンコープズのブログ on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 8:57 am in Personal - Philippines.

This could be the perfect meal for those who keep themselves healthy. Subway's hot and cold subs (sandwiches) makes your day a real healthy day, except that, do not fill too much soda on your body because they are absolutely refillable. Get rid of all those unhealthy food you eat. Try inserting this subway meal in between your daily menu. This is guaranteed to wash away excess fat on your body. Their subs contain appropriate levels of fat on their meat since the serving is just sufficient, and their veggies are real fresh. Also, their bread is already enriched with fibers since they are made from wheat flour. Make you day healthy with Subway.

It’s the law!

Okay, I've told you about my brush with this plagiarist on our egroup. As all of these are on the world wide web, it is just sad to know that there are still no clear laws on internet copyrighting. It is also frustrating because there is not much for me to do to deter this person or future plagiarists from stealing our original works.

Had it all been on newspaper, I reckon it would have been an entirely different ball game for Mister Copycat and me. By now, if all was in print, I would have consulted a law firm like simmons jannace & stagg to help me on this matter and I'd probably be able to finally put a stop to all of his unoriginality. Now this is what you call wishful thinking! :P

Copycat

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Sunday, September 16th, 2007 @ 5:53 am in Personal - International.

Geez, don't you just hate it when people copy your work without even acknowledging you as their source of information? Well, over at my other working blog, I have been ranting about this fellow egroup member who copies the articles word for word from that site and sends them as email without citing the reference for all those information. I am so irked by this person because even if I have stated in an article about my disgust over this situation, he still continues with his plagiarism by only stating the phrase "forwarded by a friend" in his emails. Argh!!!

Here is what I wrote in my other blog regarding this matter:

On a more serious note, somebody has called my attention to the posting of our articles in an egroup without (!) citing AngTherapist.com as their source. It irks me that somebody can just easily copy and paste these original articles without acknowledging the author. Friends, we don’t mind you disseminating information found on this site to your colleagues but please have the decency to name your source and not try to claim it as one of your own.

I have said the following in an earlier post but I will say it once again.

We don’t mind you sharing articles from this site. But please don’t forget to mention where you got the article from. All of the articles written here are original, except of course for seminar announcements. If you see something in quotes, those are the ones we got from other sources, which, as much as possible, we try to acknowledge as well.

And as to the ‘fair use’ of copyright, take note of the following guidelines:

(1) PERFORMANCE: the work must have been lawfully made accessible to the public and the use must only be made in private and free of charge
(2) QUOTATIONS: the work must have been lawfully made accessible to the public; the source and name of author must be named (Art. 10(1), Berne Convention)
(3) REPRODUCTION OF NEWS, etc.: if only for information purposes with source clearly indicated (Art. 10bis(1), Berne Convention)
(4) INCLUSION BY WAY OF ILLUSTRATION: for teaching purposes with source and name of author clearly indicated (Art. 10(2), Berne Convention)
(5) CRITICISM, COMMENT, NEWS REPORTING, TEACHING, SCHOLARSHIP, RESEARCH

Alright, now my next dilemma is what to do with this kind of person. Any tips?
