So I understand the technology revolution is going on in the Philippines, and that is just great. Widespread HDTV transmition is starting in Manila, and every middle class house has at least one DVD or VCD player.
This is the Samsung AR650 DVD Recorder, isn't it beautiful?I'm extremely happy because I just ordered my very first ever Samsung AR650 DVD Recorder. I bought it from Buy.com, which is a great store, I've been buying from them for about 2 years now. I must've spent like thousands of dollars, I can't even keep track because I just keep buying stuff, it's hilarious, but never more than the income that comes in, that is the key to financial growth, your expenditures should never be more than your income can handle.
That's the reason why Filipinos who suddenly come into money, nouveau riche, whether in the Philippines, in the states, or elsewhere in the world, end up right back into financial difficulty soon afterwards, because due to an common cultural trait of showing off, they tend to overspend on unnecessary expenses, throw grand parties to show off to their family and friends, and before you know it, they've spent their newly acquired fortune and are back in debt. They have a grand beautiful house, but they still to take a bath with a tabo because they can't afford the water bills. That's what I've always found ironic about our people. They have all of these new expensive gadgets, iPods, laptops, and car additions to show off to their friends, but they go home and don't have enough money for the bills and have to keep on taking cold baths with a tabo because they spent all their money on things to show off to their friends and family. It's like one's social status comes first before personal comfort, a Filipino may be living in poverty, be in deep financial debt, have to take a bath with a tabo and a big bucket of water, but as long as he has fancy gadgets and vehicles to show off to his friends and family and improve his social standing, he's happy. Oh Jesus, help us.
Of course, that's not always the situation. I have great respect for the OFWs who work hard overseas just to remit money back home to their loved ones in the Philippines, but it's very easy to see sometimes (not always) that the Filipino relatives back home will often take advantage of that income -- to show off. They'll use portions of it for bills and etc., but a large portion of it will be used to spend on unnecessary items, extravagances, grand parties just to improve their social status, meanwhile the OFW family member overseas is living like a pauper, the Filipinos back home are living like princes, albeit on an increasingly shrinking budget due to unnecessary spending. And when they're out of money? "Manong, remit again please, life is so hard here in the Philippines, we're suffering..." Suffering with grand parties and unnecessary expensive things. Ay Dios.
But anyway, Buy.com is very convenient because they can deliver it to your door or at work, and many times the shipping is free. Once I ordered a 100 pack of blank DVD-Rs, and it arrived the very next day. Amazing. Never had any problems except once when I cancelled an order, but a refund wasn't immediately transacted, but I just made a simple call, and the staff was kind and it was fixed, fast and easy.
TIP: If you buy online, buy from the richest online stores, because then you'll be guaranteed. Buy.com is one of the most popular US online stores, and it's great. Anyway I just love my DVD recorder. It records to blank DVDs, and it's so high quality, I can't believe it. Usually my Tivo is on my computer, so I used to just record to my video card, and it was a good quality video card because it was the ATI Theatre 550 Pro, which means it records it in preparation for DVDs, but even with a fast computer, it takes forever to burn DVDs on the computer, so one day I just got tired of it, went to Buy.com, forked over the $200 and bought a DVD recorder. It's neat because it also has an HDTV tuner and upscaling to an HDTV Plasma Television, which is convenient

if I ever want to record Ugly Betty to DVD, it'll be in HDTV quality so I know it'll be so clear that I'll be able to see all of their wrinkle lines on the TV screen. The return for this purchase is not only the convenience, but also more time to focus on work and other business projects when at home, because before when I recorded it to my PVR (Tivo) on the computer, then I'd have to edit the commercials, and then burn it to DVD, it took up all my time! And whatever time I had leftover to finish up my work, I didn't feel like it anymore because my back hurt from spending hours just editing the video. So God bless DVD recorders!
