I’m an Ireland

Posted by on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 @ 11:54 pm in Personal - Philippines.

Take the country quiz… it’s cool. Well, I don’t totally agree with the description of my personality but what the heck! You cannot summarize my life in just a few sentences. Right?

You’re Ireland!

Mystical and rain-soaked, you remain mysterious to many people, and this
makes you intriguing. You also like a good night at the pub, though many are just as
worried that you will blow up the pub as drink your beverage of choice. You’re good
with words, remarkably lucky, and know and enjoy at least fifteen ways of eating a potato.
You really don’t like snakes.

Filipinos, OFWs, DVD Recorders and Online Shopping

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture, and Inspiration on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 @ 5:13 pm in Entertainment.

So I understand the technology revolution is going on in the Philippines, and that is just great. Widespread HDTV transmition is starting in Manila, and every middle class house has at least one DVD or VCD player.

This is the Samsung AR650 DVD Recorder, isn't it beautiful?

I'm extremely happy because I just ordered my very first ever Samsung AR650 DVD Recorder. I bought it from Buy.com, which is a great store, I've been buying from them for about 2 years now. I must've spent like thousands of dollars, I can't even keep track because I just keep buying stuff, it's hilarious, but never more than the income that comes in, that is the key to financial growth, your expenditures should never be more than your income can handle.

That's the reason why Filipinos who suddenly come into money, nouveau riche, whether in the Philippines, in the states, or elsewhere in the world, end up right back into financial difficulty soon afterwards, because due to an common cultural trait of showing off, they tend to overspend on unnecessary expenses, throw grand parties to show off to their family and friends, and before you know it, they've spent their newly acquired fortune and are back in debt. They have a grand beautiful house, but they still to take a bath with a tabo because they can't afford the water bills. That's what I've always found ironic about our people. They have all of these new expensive gadgets, iPods, laptops, and car additions to show off to their friends, but they go home and don't have enough money for the bills and have to keep on taking cold baths with a tabo because they spent all their money on things to show off to their friends and family. It's like one's social status comes first before personal comfort, a Filipino may be living in poverty, be in deep financial debt, have to take a bath with a tabo and a big bucket of water, but as long as he has fancy gadgets and vehicles to show off to his friends and family and improve his social standing, he's happy. Oh Jesus, help us.

Of course, that's not always the situation. I have great respect for the OFWs who work hard overseas just to remit money back home to their loved ones in the Philippines, but it's very easy to see sometimes (not always) that the Filipino relatives back home will often take advantage of that income -- to show off. They'll use portions of it for bills and etc., but a large portion of it will be used to spend on unnecessary items, extravagances, grand parties just to improve their social status, meanwhile the OFW family member overseas is living like a pauper, the Filipinos back home are living like princes, albeit on an increasingly shrinking budget due to unnecessary spending. And when they're out of money? "Manong, remit again please, life is so hard here in the Philippines, we're suffering..." Suffering with grand parties and unnecessary expensive things. Ay Dios.

But anyway, Buy.com is very convenient because they can deliver it to your door or at work, and many times the shipping is free. Once I ordered a 100 pack of blank DVD-Rs, and it arrived the very next day. Amazing. Never had any problems except once when I cancelled an order, but a refund wasn't immediately transacted, but I just made a simple call, and the staff was kind and it was fixed, fast and easy.

TIP: If you buy online, buy from the richest online stores, because then you'll be guaranteed. Buy.com is one of the most popular US online stores, and it's great. Anyway I just love my DVD recorder. It records to blank DVDs, and it's so high quality, I can't believe it. Usually my Tivo is on my computer, so I used to just record to my video card, and it was a good quality video card because it was the ATI Theatre 550 Pro, which means it records it in preparation for DVDs, but even with a fast computer, it takes forever to burn DVDs on the computer, so one day I just got tired of it, went to Buy.com, forked over the $200 and bought a DVD recorder. It's neat because it also has an HDTV tuner and upscaling to an HDTV Plasma Television, which is convenient if I ever want to record Ugly Betty to DVD, it'll be in HDTV quality so I know it'll be so clear that I'll be able to see all of their wrinkle lines on the TV screen. The return for this purchase is not only the convenience, but also more time to focus on work and other business projects when at home, because before when I recorded it to my PVR (Tivo) on the computer, then I'd have to edit the commercials, and then burn it to DVD, it took up all my time! And whatever time I had leftover to finish up my work, I didn't feel like it anymore because my back hurt from spending hours just editing the video. So God bless DVD recorders!

10 TIPS IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT REVIEW CENTER

Posted by PHILIPPINE NURSE on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 @ 11:00 am in Miscellaneous.

Written by Jay of
philippinenurse.blogspot.com

1. TRACK RECORD
Choose a review center that has a high passing rate, this means that most of the people enrolled in their program are able to pass the test.
You may also look if they produce topnotchers, but I think that the passing rate is still a better gauge.

2. LOCATION
Choose a review center located in a strategic place. Some people prefer to have their review in a place near their house. This way, they are able to make their time more productive rather spending that free time for traveling. Of course there are other solutions to enrolling in a distant review center. You can opt to rent a house or dorm, or you could live with relatives living near the review center of your choice.

3. REVIEWER AND LECTURER
Choose a review center that employ good reviewers. These reviewers or lecturers doesn’t necessarily have to be popular, what is important is that they have the credentials needed in being a lecturer and that they are effective in teaching.

4. TUITION FEE & LENGTH OF REVIEW
It is important to divide the tuition fee with the total number of lecture hours in a complete review program. This way, you will know the amount you are spending per hour of lecture time. There are review centers that offer cheap tuition fees but what we don’t know is that these deductions are due to a reduced number of lecture hours.

5. TIMING
Some students prefer to have their early review so that they could spend the rest of their time polishing their past lectures and notes, Others prefer to have their review up to the last moment so that lectures are still fresh in their minds. You have to choose what option is best for you.

6. STYLE OF REVIEW
The style of review affects learning. Some review centers focus their review on live lectures; others prefer to give handouts and other materials such as CDs and books. If you are disciplined and you know how to manage your time, I think that the latter works for you.

7. FEEDBACK
If you are going to enroll on a certain review center, look for students who rendered for their services in the past. Ask them to give comments on their experiences about their review. This way, you will know if other people are satisfied with that review center.

8. ENVIRONMENT
When you are in the process of selecting a review center, see to it that they will provide you with a lecture or study room that is conducive to learning. This means that there are no noise coming from the traffic, the room must have comfortable chairs, they must have air conditioning units if possible.

9. NUMBER OF ENROLLEES
The greater the number of enrollees, the lesser the chance of getting the attention of the lecturers. For me, it is important to have a closer relationship with your lecturers and instructors. You are able to ask or clarify things which are not clear to you. Review centers can study the trend of errors committed in their pre-tests and it is easier to focus on the weakness of a small group of students.

10. PRAY
Pray for guidance. Ask Him to help you choose the right path for your success.

If you know Bisaya dialect (and for others who consider it as a language), you would probably laugh at this Korean Tuna product. OTTOGI, from the root word OTOG or UTOG means to get an erection (for men). I wonder how the names of our very own food products would mean in other languages or dialects. I hope there are no unpleasant meanings of it. If you know some, you can share it here. Send it at playpen7@gmail.com.

Looking for fresh flowers? You can find them at Holland Tulips at Glorietta. Different flower arrangements vary from P300 up to P10,000.00 or as how complicated you want your flowers to be designed. Also they offer delivery services near Makati area. Tulips are the most popular and even the good old rose. However, I find it funny to paint the cow like this as an added attraction to the store.

New Health Blog Post: Doctors’ Dress Code

Posted by Prudence and Madness on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 @ 10:07 am in Personal - Philippines.

If you noticed the buttoned-up shirt with neck tie for men, and the blouse and slacks/skirt for women, and the white coat, it’s the doctors attempt to accommodate the “look of professionalism”. It does look nice and it helps people to orient themselves as to who the doctors are in the hospital, though some do still make the mistake of calling everyone they see in the hospital as “nars” or “nurse” (not that there’s anything wrong in being mistaken for one. But job would be easier if people know who the doctor is).

However, according to this news article from Yahoo!, British hospitals are starting to ban neckties, long-sleeved shirts, the white coats and even jewelry for doctors in an effort to curb the spread of hospital-borne infections which are allegedly increased by wearing the aforementioned clothing.

“Ties are rarely laundered but worn daily,” the Department of Health said in a statement. “They perform no beneficial function in patient care and have been shown to be colonized by pathogens.”

The new regulations taking effect next year mean an end to doctors’ traditional long-sleeved white coats, Health Secretary Alan Johnson said. Fake nails, jewelry and watches, which the department warned could harbor germs, are also out.

Johnson said the “bare below the elbows” dress code would help prevent the spread of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, the deadly bacteria resistant to nearly every available antibiotic.

Hollywood actor Jesse Bradford reprises Richard Gutierrez’s role in new remake of Filipino film

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture, and Inspiration on Tuesday, September 18th, 2007 @ 6:33 am in Entertainment.

So I just remembered that the Hollywood version of Sigaw, titled The Echo, is coming out soon. The project was first noticed and brought to fruition by Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and now it's in full swing and in the process of filming in Canada. The part of Richard Gutierrez will be played by Jesse Bradford, and Iza Calzado will reprise her role in the Hollywood version, which is fantastic. It was gonna be played by this British actress, but Iza will be playing it now. Jesse Bradford watched the original version in Tagalog, and told Yam Laranas that he couldn't believe how scary it was. Yam is the skilled director of the original movie and the new Hollywood remake, and the first ever Filipino to become part of Steven Spielberg's multi-million dollar production company Dreamworks. This movie is putting the Philippines directly on the map in Hollywood. We'll be posting more updates here as soon as we hear them from Yam.

Hollywood actor Jesse Bradford gets Richard Gutierrez’s role

THIS is Jesse Bradford, the Hollywood actor recently picked to star in the US remake of Yam Laranas’ acclaimed thriller in Tagalog, “Sigaw.”

Jesse, whom we interviewed last October when he played one of the leads in Clint Eastwood’s World War II drama, “Flags of O

ur Fathers,” tackles the role played by Richard Gutierrez in the original movie. The photo was taken during our press con with him at the Warner Bros. lot.

Our congratulations to Yam — he gets to direct the American version, “The Echo,” as well. It’s a tribute to the filmmaking talent he displayed in “Sigaw.” An American director could have been chosen to helm “The Echo.” For Hollywood to give him the job, that’s a significant achievement.

Yam, way to go! For a change, it is nice to hear that Hollywood is doing a remake of a Filipino film and not the other way around. Let’s hope the American film industry taps more Pinoy stories and talents.
