On Forced Democracy

Posted by Bryanton Post on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 @ 11:26 pm in Politics.

Here's a insightful piece written by Shankar Vedantam of The Washington Post on US President George W. Bush's analogy between Philippine democracy and the Iraq situation.

Lessons in Forced Democracy
By Shankar Vedantam
September 17, 2007

Four years ago, during a speech in Manila, President Bush drew an analogy between the history of the Philippines and the history he was rewriting in Iraq.

"Democracy always has skeptics," Bush said. "Some say the culture of the Middle East will not sustain the institutions of democracy. The same doubts were proved wrong nearly six decades ago, when the Republic of the Philippines became the first democratic nation in Asia."

Since 2003, Bush has rarely mentioned the Philippines. But as the nation debates Gen. David H. Petraeus's recent report on the state of the Iraq war, a new study by political scientists Andrew Enterline and J. Michael Greig shows that the president ought to revisit his analogy.

Bush got some of his historical facts wrong, but his analogy turns out to be unintentionally accurate -- the Philippines is an excellent example of the risks, stakes and odds of imposing democracy on another country. By contrast, the oft-cited success stories of Japan and Germany turn out to be outliers.

Enterline and Greig's as yet unpublished study is a detailed examination of 41 cases over about 200 years where one nation has tried to impose democracy on another. As Washington debates the success of the recent U.S. "surge" in Iraq, the study offers a sobering glimpse of the big picture -- not the odds that the Iraqi insurgency will go up or down, but the odds that a stable democracy will emerge in the country.

Ito ang mga sugat
Kapalaran ng isang nasyon
Iginuhit ng sibilisasyong kanluran
Layuning ibunyag ang katotohanan
Ngunit bitbit nga sandata't karahasan
Silang naturing bumigkas ng inyong pangalang biniyagan ng inkaruwagan
Unti-unting naglaho ang natutunang kultura
Simulang di pagkilala sa mga sugat
Nalimutan na ang kinagisnang ritmo
Mga instrumento, liriko at tiyempo
Nasaan na nga ba ang mga testamento?
Bukod sa puso

Chorus:
Heto ang mga sugat
Mga sugat ko 'to
At simulan ang paghilom
Ang pagkilala ko (2x)
Sa mga sugat
Mga sugat mo 'to
At simulan ang paghilom
Ang pagkilala mo (2x)
Sa mga

Heto and mga sugat

(Repeat Chorus)

Hilumin mo ako
sa mga galos ko
sa mga galos na natamo (3x)

Hilumin mo ako
sa mga galos ko
sa mga galos kong ito

Hilumin mo ako panahon
Sugat kong matagal nang nabaon (2x)

(repeat chorus)

Hinahamon muli ang bawat boses
na tumutugon as tawag ng lahi
bawat boses na sinilang noong
dekada nobenta
sariling interes lang daw
ang yong nakikita.
Nababahala ang nakakatanda
Sabi-Sabi nila’y mahina
yaring mga bata.
Laki sa layaw at hindi na handa.
Anong tugon ng kabataan sa
agnitong pagkutya

[chorus]
ang alay mo’y
nilisan na ng panahon
kumilos ng mga ubing
hukayin ang nakalibing na
alay mo.

Sa pagdating ng unos ay lubus na
kinakailangang magtubos
aking dekadang binabatikos.
karanasan ay kapos.
‘Di raw tayo nakasama sa tunay

Ngayon, kaya ako’y nagtatala
Bagong kasaysayan aking
ilalathala.
Nang balang-araw mababalikan

Sa gunita ang mga kwento ay akin

[chorus]
ang alay mo’y
nilisan na ng panahon
kumilos ng mga ubing
hukayin ang nakalibing na

[bridge]
Naiwan ka na ba?
sabihin mo sa akin ang

Naiwan ka na ba?

Take a piece off my mind.
Look at me with those impenetrable eyes
Blinded by the memories you loathe.
Sing with me against the fourth wall.
"i will be pure and
Immaculately chaste
In the darkness
I will shine
Free from all disgrace."

Speak. these words will forever
Sail these streets of old.
Make these words your own.
Never again
Never to fall.

Never again should you forget
Every part of you is real.
But when light hits
Your skin reveals your shadow long ago.
Numb and oblivious to the whole
Truth that you are a secret no one knows.
Gift to mother
In her eyes you were home.

Fly away up in the clouds to chase your dreams
They never die, you say.

Shine the light upon me again
For I have spoken many words.
Words that fly frequently past the ears
Of the muopic individual.
Dreams of a nation nourished in time,
Left to die upon a desert of lies.
I'm trying to incite a riot within
'coz all is broken and barren
Beneath the surface of skin.

See, the cancer is in us.
Look away and all is over.
Undivided, undecided man...

Would you let me in
Before it;s too late to live?
Break away from comfort
And security and skin

Within us is the enemy.

Comfort breeds the lazy in a bed.
Sores are bleeding cold indifference.
Seek into the hours of your life.
Have you ever realized the lack of sacrifice?
So tap into the core of your own.
Remember fire burning in your name.
Every moment passes us
Like ashes in the wind
Fleeting away.

Shine the light upon me again,
I wanna break free,
Break free from these chains.
I am locked up in shame now.
Shine the light upon me again
I wanna break free,
Break free from these chains.
I am locked up in
Would you let me in?

Dumadaloy sakin
Bawat ilog, lawa at tubig-asin.
Dumadaloy sakin,
Sa tinataglay kong lawak ng himpapawid

Makinig sa pahiwatig ng
Makatang galing sa modernong paraan.
Hanapin ang sariling ligaw
Sa makitid na daan at pagtanaw.
Ang pagmamalay wag na wag pabayaan
Nang makabangon ang perlas ng silanganan.
Isip mo at isip ko
Ginintuang sandata ng pagbabago

Tanong ng kababayan:
Paano makakapag-isip ang walang laman ang tiyan?
Sino ang nagsabi
Na siya ang huhubog sa kinakabukasan

Madalas na 'di napapansin
Edukasyon ngayon ay kulang sa diin.
Ang ating mga silid aralan,
Ang mga guro nagbebenta na lamang.
Pero di ako susuko sa tanong.
Pag-asa ko'y kakaibat ng aking dunong.
Doon tayo sa malayo tumingin.
Mahalin ang bukas na darating.

Dumadaloy...

Walang pamagat alay kong alamat

'di makakahon damdaming naisulat
'di mo ba naririnig ang tinig ng lahat

Sabay-sabay lumiliyab, sisikat nang muli

Support the Pinoy Torchbearer for 2008 Beijing Olympics

Posted by Batang Yagit on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 @ 6:55 pm in Personal - Philippines.

As I was browsing my feeds this morning, I found this very interesting feed from Pinoy Ambisyoso. It says let's make miracle for the pinoy torchbearer in 2008 Beijing Olympics. That's when my curiosity aroused. First, I had no idea that the 2008 Olympics will be in Beijing. Second, I did not know the selection process for the Olympic torchbearer. Lastly, I got intrigued by the "Let's make miracle...." line.

Reading through the pinoy torchbearer's voting page, I realized that he really need his country's support.

Let us support our fellow Filipino, Marcos Antonio Torres, who is vying for the privilege of carrying the Olympics torch towards the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. You can vote here.

As of the moment, a Colombian national is already a few thousand votes ahead. Let us do our part as Filipinos. I believe that an internet campaign would be very effective. It's not yet too late for us to beat the one on top. Just don't forget to vote.

Click here to vote for Marco Antonio Torres.

Well I?ll Be?

Posted by jun.anteola on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 @ 9:44 am in Personal - Philippines.

My memory of Mormons used to be of clean-cut Caucasian men in immaculate white shirt and tie, leather cases in tow, walking the streets in pairs. Their house visits along the neighbourhood drew as much excitement and were as eagerly anticipated by us kids as the red cheeked Santa who tossed candy and balloons on Christmas. Being odd and Amerkano, we followed them around.

I’m not familiar with the religion, but judging by their modest appearance and the door-to-door preaching, I thought theirs is one with very little leeway for more “worldly” pursuits. I may be wrong.

With the 2008 Men On A Mission Calendar, they are breaking tradition by featuring twelve returned Mormon missionaries in their undress.

Here is part of the project information found in mormonsexposed.

While the fact that twelve young returned missionaries are posing shirtless will certainly raise eyebrows, it may also help to sort out some common misconceptions of Mormons by celebrating the beautiful bodies, great looks and amazing stories of service of these deeply spiritual men. Intended to be a light-hearted spin on a social taboo, the Men on a Mission calendar is a tongue-in-cheek celebration of the selfless servitude of missionaries.

Tongues will come a-wagging, I figure?

Laksa in Singapore

Posted by Culture Shiok! Singapore OFW on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 @ 9:01 am in Personal - International.

Hailed as Singapore’s national dish by its loyalist camp, laksa, a humble dish of rice noodles, shrimps, cockles, fish cake and chilli paste in thick coconut-based broth has won over fans, locals and expatriates alike.

Typical of Singapore original fusion food, Singapore laksa is a Chinese adaptation of Malay curry based on fresh herbs. It comes in many variations with different names depending on the topping and ingredients used.

Whatever ingredients you choose to top your laksa, the secret of a great bowl of Laksa lies in the shrimp based soup and that very special herb is called laksa leaf. Though laksa maybe served with various noodles, there is nothing quite like the subtle and smooth rice noodle used in most laksa.

Though basically a fish/shrimp based noodle soup, the different in regional variations is so big its a wonder why they should all carry the same name. The Singapore laksa is finding its way into the menu of many Asian restaurants and cookbooks. So the next time you open an Asian cuisine cookbook or visit your favorite Asian restaurant, be on the look out for LAKSA!

Filipino Love Teams: Sweet Money Machines, and Angel Locsin is Amazing

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture, and Inspiration on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 @ 7:22 am in Entertainment.

Angel Locsin es una actriz filipina.

I just wanted to take this time to talk about how amazing of an actress Angel Locsin is.

I was first introduced to her in the movie Kuya, and I just immediately was drawn to her charisma and beauty. And the character she played, it just felt so real to me. The girl who dates guys for attention, seems on top of everything, but is hiding up deep insecurities. That was such a unique character, and I couldn't see any other actress out there that could've played that role convincingly, because Angel has this sassy spicy kikay quality about her that adds realism to that role, but is also down to earth, so you see the heart behind the role.

Most Filipinos give credit to the lloronas, the crying actresses - Claudine, Judy Ann, the harder they cry, the more "awww how sweet" it seems to Filipino audiences, but me being a former drama major/ theatre actor, I learned something from personal experience that the Filipino masses might not necessarily know - it's extremely easy to play a sad, crying role, but it's much harder to play a comedic role, or a role like the one Angel Locsin played in Kuya in which you have to subtly show the insecurities of a person without being teledramatically obvious about it. Most Filipino movies are overly simple, so if it's not presented in an extremely simply way sometimes, the masses, especially the C-D classes who aren't exposed to too much foreign cinema (which seems to be more subtle in the drama) won't understand it, but, roles like that like the ones she played are the hardest for actors to portray, and she always did it well.

The way I see it, Claudine and Judy Ann and the "leading actresses" always seem to get the easiest roles - the heroin, the super sweet simple poor tortured girl that you root for. It's the same Filipino female character that is played in every single movie and every single new teleserye - it's the same young girl dreaming of love, has her heart broken, and cries like a baby in the end. For leading Filipino actors, it's the same role, just a change of gender, and add a little "mahirap ng buhay" (life is hard) and poverty to it. Claudine and Judy Ann aren't that great actresses (neither is Piolo Pascual or Richard Gutierrez), many times, it's easy to see where Judy Ann could've improved the lines here and there and how sometimes Piolo could have, but the roles that they're given are the ones that Filipinos want to see, and they have the looks to qualify for it (which overrides all other qualities sometimes), so they end up being the leads and end up getting all the popularity.

And in Filipino culture, quality or workmanship or character or merit is not that important in being popular sometimes, sadly enough.

But real acting, REAL acting, comes in the form of being able to convey complexity. The best actors and actresses, believe it or not, are those who can do comedy, because all actors know that it's extremely easy to make people cry as long as there's a good script, but it's even HARDER to make people laugh.

Assunta de Rossi is an amazing actress. Jericho Rosales is an amazing actor. Kristine Hermosa is an amazing actress. Ai Ai de Las Alas is an amazing actress. Diether Ocampo is an amazing actor. Cogie Domingo is an amazing actor. Sarita Perez de Tagle is an amazing actress. Rufa Mae Quinto is an amazing actress, although most Filipinos view her as boba, the fact that she plays comedy and drama equally well, that takes a lot of skill, but many (not all) Filipinos are so shallow, they don't even know that. Rosanna Roces is an amazing actress. Vic Sotto is an amazing actor. Vhong Navarro is an amazing actor. Jolina Magdangal is an amazing actress. Just because they're comedy, Filipinos think more lowly of them, which is not right in the first place, because if they knew how much harder it is to make people laugh than it is to make them cry, they wouldn't. And if you think about it, do you ever remember seeing an actor in a movie TRY to be funny but it is not, for example, Mark Herras or Jennylyn Mercado. There were so many movies where they TRIED to be funny, but they failed, because it just looked lame. That's proof that it's harder to make people laugh, and harder to do a comedic role than it is to play a dramatic role.

The thing about Filipino television and Filipino telenovelas (and movies) is that the scripts aren't always very good, out of every 10 scripts, only 1 ends up being of quality.

But the thing about Angel Locsin is that she's such a good actress that even the worst dramas in the past, she's managed to make even watchable.

The main problem I have with Filipino actresses is that they play up to Marianismo - the image of the Virgin Mary. Filipino actresses are always expected to be so sugary super sweet that it just makes you feel a little uneasy sometimes, because it's so unrealistic. There is no Filipino girl that exists in this world that is that sweet all the time. But you see it all the time, that is the ideal Filipino woman, super sweet, super demure, super nice and happy all the time - it's a fake image. It's not real. But it's what's expected out of Filipino actresses - and in the grand scale, what's expected out of Filipino women.

I really like the work of many Filipino actresses, but my favorite ones have been those who play against the Marianismo type - the more sassy types, because they seem more real to me than the sugary manufactured "love team" types. Love teams are a fallacy that the Filipino masses - especially the C-D socioeconomic classes - eat up. Of course, they're not real, the two actors play together, and pretend to flirt with each other to appease their fans, only sometimes does that ever lead to true love, but either way, it always started out of a social pressure to flirt with each other, in other words, they were forced to flirt with each other because this is your love team, this is what's required, this is how you should play it, flirt with him and maybe you'll find love, but you should do what's expected out of you as an actor/actress, because your career is on the line. Every Filipino actor/actress from Piolo to Judy to Aga down to even the youngest littlest newest ones knows that those are the rules, but they're unspoken rules.

But they both know that it's just show business, the actors have their own lives and own private love lives - but the masses, especially the uneducated, don't know that, and it's helpful to their own lives to escape the harsh reality of poverty and delve themselves into a made up world of a current Angel Locsin-Piolo Pascual, Dingdong Dantes-Marian Rivera, New Actor-New Actress love team. It's not real, it's completely fabricated by the TV networks in the Philippines to make money, but the Filipino masses due to their lack of education believe that it's real, they believe that Piolo Pascual has a secret crush on Toni Gonzaga, they believe that their favorite love team is just hiding their true love for each other and will end up together in the end, they believe in the love they see when their two favorite love team actors sing on live tv to each other, they believe in the fabricated world of Filipino showbiz in front of them because they don't know any better, and don't realize that in the end, the love team system is a fool-proof Filipino invention of genius and a money making system for Filipino TV networks and sponsors that will never go away as long as the Filipino public continues to remain uneducated about it, and they will for a long time in the future to come, and in the end, it benefits everybody.

It benefits everybody.

It benefits the masses as their kilig escape from harsh poverty and reality into a made up fantasy world of love and romance. It benefits the actors, who make money from that illusion, that they themselves participate in. And it benefits the TV networks of course who rake in the pesos and overseas dollars from the many times poorly-scripted, poorly directed (but not always) movies that they put out there, many times not for artistic expression but for the sole purpose to make money.

New Actor/Sam Milby/New Filipino-American with an American accent is hot right now. Quick! Pair him up with some actress, publicize and start a buzz on their supposed "flirtations" to the gullible Filipino public, write up a quick movie script, it doesn't have to be a quality story, it can be about anything because it's the star power that counts that will help us make money, put out the movie, put out the album, strike while the iron is hot, and boom! Beautiful, sweet money. And there's Filipino show business. Everybody benefits in the end, so what's the problem?

To be continued...
and is continuing in the daily lives of millions of Filipinos...

Who wants to buy my dead body?

I have not been drinking a lot lately (so mom if you're reading this, jump up and shout YEHEY! out loud) Do not worry, the mucho Red Horse and Gran Matador bottles under the sink are from a long long time ago and I have gotten rid of some of them already. I got around 50 pesos as refund from the stores when i returned those bottles.  But the Tequilla and Triple Sec in the cupboard is another story, I am still trying to decide if I will pour them in the sink. If I do, then another YEHEY! for you. But since it will be a waste, and I still have maraschino cherries, I might just go on a drinking spree this weekend OR I can just give it away to the needy. Why am i doing this?

Hello, Garci timeline

Posted by Bryanton Post on Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 @ 12:19 am in Politics.

Here's a "Hello, Garci" timeline from GMANEws.TV.

June 6, 2005

Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye holds a press conference, plays two compact disc recordings, says that both contain the voice of the President but one was doctored.

June 8, 2005

Suspended lawyer Allan Paguia says he was the source of the recordings. Paguia intended his distribution to be on an installment basis to keep the Palace in the dark.

June 10, 2005

On June 10, whistleblower Samuel Ong, a former deputy director of the country's National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) announced in a public press conference in Manila that he was the source of a set of audio tapes in circulation for the past week around the country. The master tape is allegedly of a wiretapped conversation between President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Virgilio Garcillano. Ong currently holds, as he claims, one out of four known master tapes that may incriminate Mrs Arroyo. He says that he did not tape Mrs Arroyo's conversation himself; the evidence was just entrusted to him by another source.

June 11, 2005

On June 11, Ong resided in the San Carlos Seminary in Guadalupe, Makati. Sympathizers in the area vowed to prevent his arrest and/or death. Later, the Office of the President formally denied the accusations to the public, although Mrs Arroyo's spokesman, Ignacio Bunye, had earlier acknowledged that it was Mrs Arroyo's voice in the Ong tape. Mass protests grew around the country, by the thousands.

June 12, 2005

On June 12, the country celebrated independence day. Philippine police tighten security around the seminary. Protesters who held vigil in the seminary, and in other areas, dwindled as people paid their respects to the day of independence. Protest activity overall was minimal, compared to the two previous days.

Ong tapes spread, through different forms of media like written transcripts which circulated.

More

June 13, 2005

On June 13, the official position of the government held on to the stand that the pieces of evidence are fake, and Mrs Arroyo did not commit electoral fraud. Copies of tapes, CDs, and written transcripts spread.

The Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) challenged the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) regarding warning of a possible forced closure of networks that air the contents of the tapes that involve the conversations of President Arroyo.

June 14, 2005

On June 14, The KBP attacked the NTC by calling their warning as "an attack on press freedom." The spread of tapes, CDs, written transcripts are accompanied by the spread of computer files (.doc, and .mp3) versions of the Ong recordings over the Internet. Authorities later released their own government endorsed copies over the Internet, and called the Ong recordings, already widespread, as "manipulated". Ong sympathizers countered by calling the act a last ditch attempt by the government to save itself. Sympathizers said that since the government can't control the spread of the Ong recordings, authorities just tried to confuse the electorate with their own fake recordings.

Foreign experts reportedly confirmed that the Ong recordings do indeed have the voices of Mrs Arroyo and Garcillano. This was confirmed by New Jersey based Voice Identification Inc. Mrs Arroyo has yet to respond. With the tape itself authenticated, and the voices therein confirmed, Ong sympathizers began a fresh wave of protests calling for the legal ouster of politicians. They called for the Supreme Court to declare the 2004 elections null and void. They also supported the creation of interim government, new elections, all to be followed by a new legitimate government. Mrs Arroyo stood by her claim of innocence.

June 17, 2005

On June 17, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned the Arroyo administration for attempting to restrict the airing of the Ong recordings. Christopher Warren, IFJ president said that, "Threatening journalists and media organizations is an unacceptable practice in a democracy; the [Arroyo] administration needs to be more transparent in its dealings with election officials."

Authorities instead allowed the country's media to play a government endorsed recording which they claim to be the original. The government tapes portray a conversation of Mrs Arroyo and a man named Gary, rather than Garci (nickname of Garcillano). The Ong recordings though have already been verified (both tape and content) by two neutral parties. Also, the courts have not yet had a say on the matter.

On June 18, the KBP announced that the Ong recordings may now be aired to the general public, until it is proven to be an illegal wiretap by the Arroyo administration. Both the Ong recordings and the government endorsed recordings were broadcast on mass media channels.

On June 19, Virgilio Garcillano was reportedly seen in Zamboanga City, preparing to go abroad. Copies of both recordings spread further everywhere through almost every possible means of mass media. A significant number of the country's electorate was already able to access the recordings. Names of many other election candidates and other politicians are reportedly mentioned in the recordings.

Procedures that are already in place could help end the issue of electoral fraud allegations on Mrs Arroyo, Garcillano and any other related party. Everyday life for most citizens moved back to normal, though the crisis is still ongoing. Members of Congress reportedly were interested in starting hearings about the crisis.

June 27, 2005

On June 27, a day before the burial of the former Archbishop of Manila Jaime Cardinal Sin, President Arroyo addressed the country with a television broadcast. She admitted that it was indeed her voice on the tape. She explained that she was just asking for a count in Mindanao, the southern island. Her admission was followed by an apology addressed to the people stating that she made a "lapse in judgment" in communicating with an electoral commission official during the election. Lawyer Oliver Lozano filed an impeachment case against Mrs Arroyo on the grounds of her alleged betrayal of public trust. Representative Prospero Pichay was confident that no congressman would endorse the impeachment case, however a party list representative had indeed endorsed it. The largest opposition group did not support impeachment because they believed that it was part of the political maneuvering of the administration. Former president and opposition leader Estrada said that Mrs Arroyo could not be impeached because impeachment is made on a legitimate president which, according to him, she was "not."
