Portable DVD player

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 11:43 pm in Personal - International.

Yes, can it get any clearer than that? I am definitely jotting that down on our wishlist -- a portable 10 inch DVD player. I tell you, this list is getting longer and longer as the days pass by!

Why, you ask, are we including this gadget? Well, it is for the simple reason that Erin seems to be easily entertained by what she sees on the screen of late, especially if her favorite shows are on. The time will come when she will be a bit older and she will be able to show more appreciation for movies. So a portable DVD player will definitely come in handy especially when we are on the road. With a massive high resolution and high quality ten-inch screen, it will surely keep her entertained for hours on end anywhere and anytime she wants it. If she is happy, then we are happy too.

Changing Times

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that J was not wearing the watch I gave him. You see, he wears his watch even if he is asleep in bed. So to see him "watch-less" meant that something must have gone wrong with his timepiece.

I was right. He told me that a screw in the bracelet had gone missing which naturally did made it impossible for him to wear the watch on his wrist. We might take it to mall to have it fixed. But if it is found to be beyond repair, then maybe we'd just have to start shopping around for a new one, like the piece by Patek Philippe.

Laong Laan

Posted by Batang Yagit on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 7:46 pm in Personal - Philippines.

Few of you might have wondered of the sudden blog identity crisis of BatangYagit.com this afternoon. I changed my profile and title from Batang Yagit to Laong Laan.

A friend, who's making a project for her Mass Communication course, asked me if she could use my blog for her film. The film is about a lonely person named Laong Laan. A part of the film is wherein Laong Laan's friend opened Laong Laan's blog (Batang Yagit's blog). That's the reason behind that I am too much alone in this world post.

Yes, the poem was nice but i'm not in the mood of getting emo. I didn't write the poem either. The author's name was written right after the poem. Hehehhee. There's only one poem I could remember that I wrote for the past 10 years of my life. (It's not that good i think.)

What to blog, what to blog?

Posted by Batang Yagit on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 7:25 pm in Personal - Philippines.

It has been a while since the last time I made a post on this blog. I've been very busy in school these days that I can't find time to make a post. The creative juices and crave for blogging seems to ran out of my head. I dunno. I'm just exhausted in school stuff.

It's my 200th post and I don't have any sensible topic to post. I hope this one would do.

My first credit card

Posted by Culture Shiok! Singapore OFW on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 12:07 pm in Personal - International.

Credit cards are very convenient payment mechanism. It is not intended to be a long term credit facility. Should you require long-term financing, you may wish to consider alternative financial products.

There are 0% credit cards which offer 0% interest when you transfer your high-interest credit card balances.

Competition among banks have brought about the best credit cards. Some will give you rebates for gas, shopping, utilities and other everyday purchases. Some will give out movie tickets and free popcorn. Some will give you plane tickets for to to your favorite tourist destination. And some will give cash rewards.

Before applying for a credit card, ask yourself:
1. Why am I applying for this credit card?
2. Can I pay for the purchases in full each month? Or do I intend to pay the minimum sum required and rollover my payment?
3. If I do rollover my payments, do I have the capacity to pay the accompanying charges?

Used wisely, a credit card can provide convenience and allow you to make purchases with nearly a month to pay for them before finance charges kick in.

One City Three Festivals

Posted by Culture Shiok! Singapore OFW on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 11:46 am in Personal - International.

After the Great Singapore Sale season, I'm starting to believe that one of the best times to visit Singapore is during the months of September through November. Singapore is holding three cultural festival all happening in the same period.

There's the Chinese's Mid-Autumn Festival, with its colorful lanterns and mooncakes, the Muslim's Hari Raya with its street bazaars and the Hindu's Deepavali with its bustling stalls and a line up of music and dance performances. Rich in contrast and color, Singapore's ethnic enclaves teem with activity that echoes all throughout the island giving Singapore a very festive atmosphere.

IMMUNITY

Posted by on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 11:34 am in Miscellaneous.

IMMUNITY – body’s reaction to any foreign body that might enter our tissues
2 types:
  • NON SPECIFIC/ CELLULAR / Innate immunity present in our body since we were born
  • SPECIFIC

Mediators (non specific)

1. MECHANICAL BARRIERS

  • Skin (keratinized)
  • Body secretions ( sweat, oil)
  • Cilia (transports)
  • Mucus (traps organism entering the Respiratory tract)

2. CHEMICAL BARRIERS

  • Enzymes (lysozymes)
  • Acids ( kills bacteria by denaturation)
    Fatty acids – skin
    Gastric acids – stomach
  • Complement system – becomes activated in cascade fashion 1,2,3…..
Activated Complements System – presents antigen to the bacteria; once activated, has to be removed from the body

3. INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE

Presents the 5 Cardinal signs which is chemically mediated that can come from:

  • Damaged tissues
  • Inflammatory cells
  • Even from the bacteria itself

5 Cardinal signs & symptoms of inflammation:
1. redness (rubor)
2. swelling (tumor)
3. pain (dolor)
4. heat (calor)
5. loss of function (functiolaesa)

FXN:

  • forms a barrier to confine infection
  • tries to eliminate infectious agent
  • initiates repair of damaged tissues

4. CELLS – WBC’s

a) GRANULOCYTES – granulocytic leukocytes; WBC’s with granules inside the cytoplasm

1. Neutrophiles – plenty; 1st line of defense; 1st to respond during an infection
HALLMARK OF ACUTE INFECTION (10days)
Once they leave, they cannot go back (through “DIAPEDESIS”)
CBC - increased Neutrophiles = acute infection
Disease is current; can be bacterial

HOW DO NEUTROPHILES KILL BACTERIA?

  • Phagocytic – active engulfing
  • Degranulation – release granules in the cytoplasm which contains cytotoxins that kill the bacteria

2. Eosinophiles – mediate for Allergies; Hypersensitivity reaction; Anaphylactic reaction;

Contains vasoactive dilators:

  • Serotonin
  • Histamine
  • Bradykinin

Limited phagocytic activities
“Picky eaters” eat only * complement system, * Ag aggregated with Ab

3. Basophiles – HEPARIN – anti coagulant; lesser blood clots

b) AGRANULOCYTES

1. Monocytes – found in the blood which rids bacteria, virus, and other debris
“scavengers” (10 days in circulation)
ACTIVE phagocytes
DIAPEDESIS – mode of escape w/o damage
MACROPHAGES – once they are out, monocytes take this form; derivative
Neutrophiles, Monocytes, Macrophages = 3 active phagocytic cells

2. Lymphocytes – non phagocytic cells
HALLMARK OF CHRONIC INFECTION

a) T –CELLS/ T-LYMPHOCYTES = (Cellular Immunity)
T- cells mature in the Thymus glands(Lymphoid organs)
Once there is an infection, they become ACTIVE EFFECTOR CELLS

  • Natural killer cells – non phagocytic cells which kills by secreting LYMPHOKINES
kills ON CONTACT; has intimate contact with bacteria (sila ang Police na pumapatay sa kahit sinong magnanakaw - virus, bacteria)
  • Helper cells – calls for other WBC’s which circulate around the body by secreting “OPSONINS” (chemically attract WBC). WBC aids in the attack; (nagtatawag para may katulong ang Police sa laban)
  • Suppressor cells – the absence of these mediators will cause destruction of normal tissues
(taga awat kung bugbog na ang kalaban, kung walang aawat sila-sila din ang magpapatayan kahit kakampi nila- “Autoimmune disease”)

b) B CELLS/ B LYMPHOCYTES - mediator of specific immunity

  • must 1st recognize specific Ag (nag draw-drawing ng cartographic sketch ng magnanakaw the 1st time na pumasok sya sa bahay)
  • acquires Ab’s once exposed to microorganism (ipapakita niya yung drawing niya sa police para next time na papasok ang magnanakaw kilala na ng police at bubugbugin na niya ang magnanakaw)

  • improves with exposure (mas madalas niya makita at mas madalas sya manakawan, mas lalo na niya nakikilala ang magnanakaw para lalong maituro at mahuli ng police )

  • Humoral immunity

ACTIVE EFFECTOR B CELLS:

  • MEMORY CELLS – (Ang “WITNESS” na nag draw-drawing ng cartographic sketch ng magnanakaw the 1st time na pumasok sya sa bahay)
  • PLASMA CELLS – makes Ab’s specific to description of the memory cells; (bumubuo ng “TASK FORCE POLICE” para lumaban sa muling pagbalik, dun lang sa magnanakaw na nai-drawing ng witness - “Antigen-Antibody Response”)

IMMUNIZATION – is the process by which we reinforce our immune system by introducing antigens that stimulate antibody responses

  • ACTIVE – our own body participates in the production of Ab’s
slow acting so it is introduced during our childhood; last longer than passive
VACCINES – made up of dead, inactivated organisms; parts of Ag’s; or attenuated (weakened virus or bacteria)
  • PASSIVE – giving antibodies (Ab’s) especially during epidemic
Gives immediate protection but temporary (3-6months)
    Ex. Equine vaccine from horses
    A) NATURAL – from mother to baby
    B) PASSIVE – Ab’s from other sources

Busy break

Aaaaaah. Ten days before October 15–the day I will know if I am accepted in the Internal Medicine Residency program of PGH. From the day I submitted my application, I knew this was a long shot. Now, as I await the results, there’s no thumbs up or thumbs down around me. Aie. I just hope for the best.

I’m very happy that I’ve been productive despite my anxiety over the results. My job with Telehealth/MIU turned out to be very challenging and I’ve also squeezed in some time to finish an old personal project–Okidoks.com. Here’s an ad:

Filipino singer Enrique Iglesias is glad he’s not a woman

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture & Inspiration Blog on Friday, October 5th, 2007 @ 2:00 am in Entertainment.

I'm referring to him as a Filipino singer and will refer to him as such from now on, because the entire world refers to him and has been referring to him for years as a Spanish singer completely ignoring the fact that his mother is Filipina, and they categorize him and label him to whatever fits their preferred racial palette, so I'm gonna do something nobody ever does, especially in the racist eurocentric English and Spanish-language media in the U.S., Europe, Latin America, and Spain that I watch everyday, which is to acknowledge his mother, grandmother, uncles and aunts, cousins, culture, family, people, and ancestors from the Philippines. MABUHAY!

“Though I was born in Madrid, my being a Filipino is very strong in me,” says Enrique. “When I was growing up, my mom (Isabel Preysler) would always talk about the Philippines. She taught us the things that are very important to Filipino culture such as family, being hospitable to guests, and fear of God. I even remember the Filipino dishes she used to whip up.” - Manila Standard, March 18, 2004

Enrique Iglesias Talks About Being Filipino

Enrique Iglesias is glad he's not a woman because he couldn't handle having menstruation.
Bang Showbiz

The 'Insomniac' singer insists men have it far easier than women because the fairer sex has to deal with menstrual cycles, pregnancy and childbirth.

He said, "I think it must be harder to be female than male. Apart from having to deal with period pains, pregnancy and child birth, I think women are more emotional than men. It's not just that they find it easier to talk about emotions, I think they actually feel emotions more deeply."

The 32-year-old singer, who has been in a relationship with former tennis player Anna Kournikova for the past five years, also revealed he gets on better with girls than men.

He said, "I'm as comfortable with women as I am with men. Of my closest friends, three are men and two are women.

"I learned a lot about women from my mother and my nanny, but I don't think you really get to know what makes women tick until you have a romantic relationship."

Despite claiming to get on well with women, Enrique isn't a very romantic man.

He said, "Like most men, I'm not very good at romantic gestures."

Feast One Hundred & Sixty Three

Appetizer
On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest, how much do you look forward to your birthday?
Hmmm... I'd give it a 5. I am indifferent to it because I'll be turning 32 then. Pretty much 'not in the calendar,' as they say! I am looking forward more to Erin's first birthday, which, occurs, by the way, on the same month.

Soup
What is one word you don’t like the sound, spelling, or meaning of?
There are so many words out there so I sought Google's help to give me a shortlist of possible words. Ok, here is my random pick: furuncle. It sounds weird to me. Its definition? Well, it's also known as a boil. In Filipino, pigsa! Yuck! :P

Salad
Do you wear sunglasses when you’re outside? If so, what does your current pair look like?
I used to wear a pair before. But now with a little girl who's keen on grabbing everything in sight, not anymore.

Main Course
If you were to write a book, to whom would you dedicate it?
Definitely, J and Erin. They are the most important people in my life. My world revolves around them.

Dessert
Name a beverage that you enjoy.
I love iced coffee drinks, especially topped with whipped cream! I refrain from drinking them these days because I am still breastfeeding Erin. So whenever we got to a cafe, I just order a cup of hot choco instead.
