She’s so Beautiful!!!… My Encounter With the Airbus A380

Posted by "Travel blogging? Is that thing still around?" on Friday, October 12th, 2007 @ 10:39 pm in Personal - Philippines.

History was made last October 11 and 12 when the World's Largest Passenger Aircraft, the Airbus A380 MSN009, first landed on Philippine soil. On October 11, the aircraft touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) at about 2:45 pm and remained there overnight to be serviced by airport personnel.

I went to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA), also known as Clark Airport, to see up close the most sophisticated commercial airliner today. The aircraft was expected to touchdown at 11:40 am. Hundreds of airplane spotters, aviation enthusiasts and ordinary people lined-up the field of the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) headquarters to wait for the arrival of the A380 which will be parked at Bay 9 in fornt of CIAC. At about 11:50 am people shouted that they can already see the aircraft coming. The atmosphere at that time is like watching an airshow as 6 Philippine Air Force fighter planes patrolled the skies and somewhat escorted the flying giant.

The A380 seemed that she will land but just passed the length of the runway with just a hundred feet vertical clearance and treated the eager crowd to acrobatic maneuvers with left and right banks at full throttle. The wait under the heat of the midday sun proved to be worthwhile as spectators were amazed how a "giant" white metal glides through the air. The A380 made a right turn and came back to line up with the runway of DMIA. The two parallel runways at Clark (3,200 meters) is shorter than the main runway of NAIA (3,737 meters) or any other international airport runways in the region but it proved that the aircraft is suitable for Clark as it only used less than 3/4 of the entire length of the runway. Airbus Industrie claims that the A380 is suitable in any runway that currently services the Boeing 747 aircraft.

The A380 has a moniker of "gentle green giant" as it is quieter, economical for operators and more environment-friendly than its main rival the Boeing 747.

The purpose of the visit of the A380 is to conduct tests on airfield maneuvering, docking, ground handling services and fueling to determine its compatibility with various airports around the world.

I don't know when will the A380 will land again here in the Philippines. As of this day no Philippines-based carrier placed an order for the A380 and if ever other legacy carriers will use it in their Manila route our airports still needs some upgrading to accommodate the A380. The launch customer of the giant aircraft is Singapore Airlines which is due for delivery on October 22, 2007.

Back Care Awareness Week

Posted by AngTherapist.com on Friday, October 12th, 2007 @ 7:55 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy recently celebrated Back Care Awareness Week last October 8 to 12.

Facts & Figures

In a recent survey commissioned by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) 41 per cent of people say they have experienced back pain/ache in the last two years. Despite evidence that exercise is crucial to the relief and prevention of back pain problems (1), only 3 per cent were given advice on exercise by their GP and 32 per cent of people had to wait 2-6 months to see a physiotherapist. Physiotherapists are experts in the management and prevention of back pain. Early intervention by a physio reduces the likelihood of back pain becoming a chronic problem.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons for chronic disability and incapacity for work in the western world. In the UK up to 5 million working days are lost each year and up to half a million people receive a long term state incapacity benefit because of back pain. In addition to the impact on individuals and their families, back pain is estimated to cost the UK economy up to £5bn a year (source: DWP). Back problems can have a dramatic effect on everyday life, affecting work, leisure activities and family or social relationships – 66 per cent of people in the survey say their work and/or personal life has been affected in a negative way by back pain or backache.

The CSP has come up with a leaflet entitled ‘Lazy Exercise and Back Care’ to help busy people integrate some simple exercises into their lives to help increase fitness and avoid the misery of back pain.

Two Minds Crack

Posted by A Day In The Life... on Friday, October 12th, 2007 @ 1:16 pm in Miscellaneous.

Two Minds CrackSome of you probably still remember the group, “Two Minds Crack”… the band that performed the New Wave hit song, “Upside Down”, back in the early 80s.

Well, a few months back I posted a remake of their hit single, performed by “Candles”… a band I used to co-manage till they disbanded (creative differences).  This particular remake was included in the group’s debut album which came out during the last quarter of 2006 under Viva Records.  Long before 6CycleMind’s version was ever released.

When I first featured the song here on my blog months back, I got a surprise visit by Two Minds Crack band member, Kevin Jones!  He actually left a short comment below my post commending the band on how well he thought the remake was done.  His message was as follows:

“Hi, I was the lead singer/guitarist in Two Minds Crack and I wrote Upside Down - I really enjoyed the Candles version - keep up the good work!!”

Earlier today, I got another message on the same post… but this time it came from Two Minds Crack co-member, Pete Martin!  His message:

“Greetings Candles…loved the version of Upside Down.Don’t listen to Kevin Jones…. I wrote upside down…. I was guitarist and keyboard player in Two Minds Crack… that Jones fella gets everywhere!Joking aside, we wrote that and first recorded it back in 1983 ish, the finished version being released on The Victory Parade album in 1986. We didn’t find out until the 90’s that it was a big hit over there which was a shame cos to be sure we would have come out and played some gigs. It’s a big thrill to hear someone cover one of your tracks believe me. Keep rocking in the free world son…..and at least you got Kev’s words correct !!! Pete.”

Hahaha… I was particularly amused by his last words (”and at least you got Kev’s words correct!!!”) coz I also found out that Pete is aware of 6CycleMind’s version.  And listening closely to their own rendition of the 80s New Wave classic, you’ll notice that there is quite a number of wrong lyrics in it.

Well, it’s a shame Candles disbanded so early in their careers… but things like these do happen.  Oh well… I guess that’s that.

I suppose it’s only appropriate that I feature Candles’ version of “Upside Down” for everyone to enjoy.  So… without further ado…

Penoy Balut!

I recently stumbled upon an image floating around the net which I haven’t seen in ages!  I was pleasantly surprised to discover an image cap of an old old film entitled, “Penoy Balut”.  This film featured Nora Aunor, Roderick Paulate, Me and Isabel Granada.

Penoy Balut

Funny thing is… I don’t have a video of this movie… nor can I clearly recall the plot/story of this film anymore.  Hahaha!  If I remember right, this was filmed way back in 1988… and the location where that image was taken is somewhere along Ortigas (actually Granada St.), one of the houses situated in front of JT’s Manukan.  I think.  Hay… feeling nostalgic again… LOL!  Lotsa memories… good times… fun times.  Oh well…!

Pinoy Torch bearer ranks 3

Posted by Batang Yagit on Friday, October 12th, 2007 @ 10:38 am in Personal - Philippines.

Yesterday, I asked Jehzeel to do a last minute campaign in gathering votes for Marcos Antonio Torres who's vying for the privilege of carrying the Olympics torch towards the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The deadline for voting is on Sunday, October 14.

When I checked the voting page this evening, I was shocked that the votes reached 8,100. As of the latest count, Marcos rank 3 among the hundreds who made their attempts. We are just a few thousands away from the American expat who ranks first. I have high hopes that we can make it to the top.

Do your part now. It's not yet too late. Vote our fellow FILIPINO.

Print Screen Meme

Posted by Batang Yagit on Friday, October 12th, 2007 @ 6:42 am in Personal - Philippines.

I have not answered a meme in ages. Jehzeel tagged me for this meme few weeks ago. This purpose of this meme is to show a print screen of the tagged person's desktop.

There's nothing interesting that can be seen on my desktop. I have this modified wallaper, cracked windows theme and a messy start menu. Desktop icons? nah. I prefer a clean desktop.

The Meme Rules:

My Desktop Free View Instruction:

A. Upon receiving this tag, immediately perform a screen capture of your desktop. It is best that no icons be deleted before the screen capture so as to add to the element of fun. You can do a screen capture by:

[1] Going to your desktop and pressing the Print Scrn key (located on the right side of the F12 key).

[2] Open a graphics program (like Picture Manager, Paint, or Photoshop) and do a Paste (CTRL + V).

[3] If you wish, you can “edit” the image, before saving it.

B. Post the picture in your blog. You can also give a short explanation on the look of your desktop just below it if you want. You can explain why you preferred such look or why is it full of Icons, things like that.

C. Tag five of your friends and ask them to give you a Free View of their desktop as well.

D. Add your name to this list of Free Viewers with a link pointing directly to your Desktop Free View post to promote it to succeeding participants.

Legal concerns in journalism

Posted by Bryanton Post on Friday, October 12th, 2007 @ 3:19 am in Politics.

The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism held a training workshop on investigative journalism last September.

The training had a session tackling legal concerns in investigative journalism. Session lecturer Jose Manuel Diokno (Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) chairperson tackled, among others:
  • Right to information on matters of public concern
  • Right to be free from prior restraint
  • Right to report on any legislative, judicial or other official proceedings and the statements made in those proceedings, or any other acts of public officers in the exercise of their functions
  • Right to report on matters of public concern and the conduct of public officials and public figures
  • Right to protect your sources
For more about the session, click here. Download Diokno's presentation here. The legal concerns discussed in the session definitely do not just concern investigative journalists but other members of the press as well.

What’s wrong here?

What's wrong with this sentence?

Have you heard Coheed and Cambria's song entitled "Wake Up"?

Read here what's wrong. For more grammar and writing tips, click here. Thanks to my dear friend Venus for pointing me to this site.
