New Backpain Guidelines

Posted by on Sunday, October 14th, 2007 @ 9:50 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy in the United Kingdom has published guidelines for the effective use of exercise and manual therapy in the management of people with persistent low back pain. They were developed by experts in persistent low back pain from throughout the UK, taking into account patient views.

Key recommendations are that:
• people with persistent lower back pain should be given the opportunity to participate in an exercise programme after physiotherapy assessments;
• exercise is a cost-effective way of reducing pain and improving function;
• manual therapy, if used, should be part of a package of care that includes exercise and self-management to reduce pain, improve function and improve psychological status.

The guidelines cost £50, but reductions are available for some groups. Contact the Enquiry Handling Unit, The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, 14 Bedford Row, London WC1R 4ED, email: enquiries@csp.org.uk.

Another Reunion!

Cousin Josephine informed me about the 1st year death anniversary of her Mom - Aunt Loring, and loving wife to Uncle Pepito who also passed away early this year. I would say that this also marks the 1st year of knowing my long lost relatives, hehe! We arrived late, ok! Last night was another mark. I finally met Uncle Nando Sumangil who arrived from San Diego, California a few days ago. He

Concrete Sam

I had a lengthy conversation with Don last night. We talked about the things he’s busy with while everybody in the gathering were also busy on their respective stuffs: his job in a multinational BPO provider, his sibblings in the states (Dennis in particular), his girl friend, a significant issue he recently saw on the National Geographic channel, and the band he’s with - the Concrete Sam.

Sports and the press

Here's an interesting piece on the decline of sports news in US TV. Come to think of it, I rarely see sports news reports in local television nowadays. Well, except when there are major sports events like Manny Pacquaio's boxing matches (which by the way are largely exploited to the hilt by sponsoring TV networks).

Instead, do it better -- or someone else certainly will.

Shane Moreland, of WTKR-TV in Norfolk, Va., is a friend of mine and one heck of a news director. He's also not the first friend of mine to drop sports from its daily slot in a television newscast; another friend, Mike George, did the same thing about seven years ago at KVBC in Las Vegas.

Shane and Mike reflect the frustrations of many news directors and general managers whose market research indicates that sports segments of local television newscasts rank near the bottom of reasons to watch. Considering the money it costs to produce local sports coverage, some stations simply don't think the investment makes sense anymore.

I have a ton of respect for Shane and Mike, who are excellent journalists. I just wonder whether they would have come to a different decision had they approached the issue from another direction. Rather than dumping the sports department, we should change our sports philosophy.

Preparing for the Mindanao Bloggers Summit 1

Posted by on Sunday, October 14th, 2007 @ 7:18 am in Personal - Philippines.

A lot of bloggers have already confirmed their attendance in the Mindanao Bloggers Summit this October 27. As of the latest count, 89 bloggers will convene at NCCC Mall for the whole day activity which was organized by The Usual Suspects.

Before engaging into any activity or event, one must make preparations prior to the activity. But what are the preps that should be made? I have read the “A Mini Guide to Offline Blog Events” post of Karlo (PinoyBlogero.com) and took few of his ideas on how we should prepare for an offline blog event like the Mindanao Bloggers Summit.

How to prepare for the Mindanao Bloggers Summit

How to prepare for the Mindanao Bloggers Summit

  1. Register for the Mindanao Bloggers Summit Event
The first thing that you should do is to register for the event. The registration for MBS1 can be found here. The registration requires the user to have his/her own blog before he/she can join the event (of course). This event is intended for amateur and professional bloggers in Mindanao.
  2. Make the “I’m joining the Mindanao Bloggers Summit!
This event is FREE. Thanks to our sponsors who were so generous in helping The Usual Suspects in making the event possible. Since everything in the summit is free, the only thing that the organizers ask is a single post in our blog. This post includes the links to the websites of the MBS1 sponsors. Details about the post is sent through e-mail after completing the registration form.
  3. Update the Sponsor List
The event is so much blessed with sponsors that they keep on coming every now and then. We should update our “I’m joining the Mindanao Bloggers Summit!” for the latest list of sponsors for the event. MindanaoBloggers.com has the latest list of MBS1 sponsors.
  4. Check the event details
Know the date, venue and other details. Check the event program to know the flow of activities. It’s better if we could schedule the even in our organizers. I already posted the details on my phone’s calendar and set an alarm on my organizer. You might as well use Google Calendar. It has an SMS Reminder feature where you can receive an SMS that would remind you of your scheduled appointments.
  5. Book for a place to stay
Since this is a Mindanao-wide event, a lot of bloggers from other cities will be coming. For those of you who don’t have a place to stay, book your hotel reservations at the soonest time. You don’t want to sleep in the streets of Davao, right?
  6. Know how to get to the venue
For those who do not know how to get to the venue, NCCC Mall is located at MacArthur Highway, Ma-a, Davao City. It’s near the downtown are of the city. To be sure, take a cab. If you’re on a tight budget, take the Ma-a jeepneys from downtown Davao. It usually stops by NCCC.
  7. Prepare your get-up
First impressions last forever. You don’t want your readers to remember you as the blogger who wore a torn shirt and mismatched slippers during the event. Plan on what you will wear on the day of the event. It’s a casual gathering. A casual outfit would do. For me, i’m planning to print a shirt.
  8. Prepare some blogger business card
A lot of bloggers will be coming in the event. It’s a chance for you to do a little advert. Prepare a flashy business card. You might want to include your Name, Blogger Nick, Blog Name, URL, E-mail, Messenger ID and other information that you think necessary. It’s a good way for other participants to remember you after the event. It might even drive more traffic to your site.
  9. Find an event buddy
Befriend other bloggers who will be attending the summit. It’s better if you have someone to talk to when you feel you are out of place during the event. It’s inevitable.

  10. Bring your camera and laptop with you
You might want to do some live updates of the event on your blog. Posting pictures and event updates would be easier since NCCC is one of the many WiFi HotSpots in Davao City which offers FREE WiFi access.

Murdered for doing journalism

Posted by on Sunday, October 14th, 2007 @ 2:28 am in Politics.

It is not the soldier who gets killed for exposing corruption. It is not the soldier who gets slain for reporting on and criticizing other problems in the country, such as illegal gambling and the drug trade.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer published the latest report made by the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) on the state of press freedom in the Philippines. CMFR’s findings showed that majority of the journalists slain in the line of duty (nearly 90 percent) during the Arroyo administration were exposing corruption. Others were killed for reporting on and criticizing illegal gambling and the drug trade. Click here for the Inquirer story.

Injustice against the indigenous peoples

What is the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) doing to address this problem? The press can also help in solving this injustice against the indigenous peoples by providing reports explaining the law.

Most IPs don’t understand law

Ten years after the implementation of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), most indigenous peoples in Southern Mindanao still do not have full grasp of the law.

Much worse, they said, the law have become a means to rob them of their lands instead of the protecting their ancestral domain.
