It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Friday, November 30th, 2007 @ 6:47 pm in Personal - International.

Yes, our tree is finally up. I am basically done with the decors so that's that. I might add a few more baubles here and there if something nice catches my eye. Otherwise, that's about it. :)

And here's the little girl posing in front of the tree. It looks like she's already got the Christmas spirit, don't you think? :D

Bed of roses (not!)

Posted by on Friday, November 30th, 2007 @ 6:25 pm in Personal - International.

We have two beds in this house. One for us, and the other for the guest room. The mattress in the guest room though is a bit old now and looks kind of out of shape. I am thinking of replacing it soon, maybe in the coming year. That is, of course if I find a good deal. Well, let’s hope there is one out there so we don’t have to spend so much on it.

International Day of Disabled Persons 2007

Posted by Ang Therapist on Friday, November 30th, 2007 @ 6:20 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

In 1992, at the conclusion of the United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons (1983-1992), the General Assembly proclaimed 3 December as the International Day of Disabled Persons to celebrate and acknowledge the experience and capabilities of people with disabilities (PWDs).

Employment is one of the main issues for PWDs.  In explaining this year’s theme “Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities,” UN Enable highlights  Article 27  titled “Work and Employment” of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

In every society very few persons with disabilities are gainfully employed. In fact, in most countries up to 80% of persons with disabilities of working age are unemployed. Most others are under-employed or will never have access to the labour market. Everywhere there is a sizable gap between the working conditions and employment trends of persons with disabilities and those without a disability. All too often persons with disabilities are dependent upon begging, hand-outs, and welfare for their livelihood, not through any meaningful employment. The denial of opportunities and negative attitudes are the main reasons why persons with disabilities are disproportionally absent from the workforce.

This year’s International day of Disabled Persons focuses on how to ensure decent work for persons with disabilities and on ways to tap into the abilities of this marginalized talent pool. The recently adopted Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes in Article 27 the rights of persons with disabilities to work and employment on an equal basis with others. It stresses the right of persons with disabilities to earn a living from freely chosen work, and to work in an environment that is both accessible and accepting.

Have a look-see

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Thursday, November 29th, 2007 @ 10:06 pm in Personal - International.

Summer is here and for many people, it is camping season as well. If you are going sight-seeing anytime soon, then make sure to get a pair of binoculars so you won't miss out on anything important and worth seeing in bush.

I haven't done my bit of camping ever since I could remember. Neither is it J's favorite activity. We're not the outdoors kind of people you see because we still want the comforts that a home could give, like a decent bathroom and toilet. It's just not our cup of tea. Don't get me wrong though. I like nature trekking, just not camping overnight.

World AIDS Day 2007

Posted by Ang Therapist on Thursday, November 29th, 2007 @ 6:41 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

On  December 1st.

Take the Lead.

Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise.

Building on from last year’s theme of accountability, the 2007 and 2008 World AIDS Day theme is “leadership”.  This theme will continue to be promoted with the campaigning slogan, “Stop AIDS.  Keep the Promise.” The World AIDS Campaign (WAC) is encouraging everyone to  show leadership – as an individual, in our families, communities or in our place of work.

STOP AIDS Leadership Pledge

In collaboration with national, regional, global and constituent partners, this initiative asks people from all over the world to pledge their leadership to help stop AIDS. These pledges collected online, by mail and at events, will be used to create exhibitions, banners and other visibility actions during major events in 2008. With a goal of 100,000 signees, these pledges serve as a persuasive tool for leveraging greater political leadership on universal access to AIDS prevention, treatment, care and support and act as a visual example for key national and international decision-makers to follow.

Gift shopping

Posted by on Thursday, November 29th, 2007 @ 6:07 pm in Personal - International.

I am trying to draw up my wishlist for this year’s family gift exchange. I still have not completed it yet because I do not have the slightest idea what to get at $25, except for a book perhaps, which I had already jotted down on my list.

I still don’t know who my partner is because we have yet to draw lots soon. I hope it’s going to be one of the females who love cooking as it will be very easy to get them stuff for the kitchen like chef’s aprons. Cozy Homewares would be a nice shop to browse around but it’s too bad that they deliver for free only to their US customers.

An assault not only on press freedom, but also on democracy itself

Posted by Bryanton Post on Thursday, November 29th, 2007 @ 6:05 am in Politics.

The arrests of journalists and other media practitioners who were covering the Makati incident is not only unprecedented but an outrage. Worse, it is a telling indication of the authoritarian tendencies of this administration, which has fallen in its obsession with political dominance.

That is what the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility said in a statement it issued just now in the light of arrests made on journalists covering the Peninsula Hotel takeover. CMFR also calls on all media, free expression and journalists’ groups in this country as well as abroad to "denounce this atrocity as a willful act to inflict collateral damage on the Philippine press for doing its mandated responsibility of providing the sovereign public the information it needs."

Any moment now, the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR) is issuing a statement on the arrests made on journalists covering the Makati incident.

From Freedom Watch

Journalists and media organizations condemn the arrest of journalists

Maria Ressa, head of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, condemned the arrests of not only members of the ABS-CBN 2 technical team but also other journalists and media practitioners covering the Makati incident.

"We in ABS CBN News strongly condemn the illegal arrests of our ABS CBN reporters and our colleagues in the media and decry the atrocious treatment we are being subjected to in the hands of the police. Our reporters were in the Manila Peninsula purely to fulfill their duties as journalists," she said.

You'll have to excuse my 'negligence' of this blog for some time. I haven't been getting opportunities in the last couple of days and that has somehow decreased my interest in writing. I can't believe all this paid posting has the capacity to give me the drive to write! It used to be just all about feeling creative. But now, things have changed. And that's not exactly a good thing in my book. :(

The sports spectator I am

Posted by A Matter of Perspective on Wednesday, November 28th, 2007 @ 5:39 pm in Personal - International.

When I was a child, I used to watch major league baseball with my dad on TV. He has always been a sports spectator (though never a player) and that has somehow been instilled in me up to this day.

Unlike J, I notice that I also share that love for watching sports with my dad even if I have my own family now. And if I did get the chance to get him a couple of Boston Red Sox Spring Training tickets, I am sure he will be over the moon when he finds out. That is if I do get the chance. Gosh, that would really make some great Christmas present for someone like him who's really into sports like baseball.

CAOT News

Posted by Ang Therapist on Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 @ 6:26 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information  released a report titled Workforce Trends of Occupational Therapists in Canada last November 20, 2007.  Quoted below was the response of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists  to this report as posted on their website.

Reported increase in occupational therapists in Canada is insufficient to meet rising demands

A report released today by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) indicates that the number of occupational therapists in Canada has risen by 27% over five years from 2000 to 2005. This data confirms that occupational therapy is one of the fastest growing professions in the health care system. Yet, according to the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT), despite constant growth in the number of trained occupational therapists, Canadians continue to experience problems with accessing occupational therapy services.

“We are encouraged by the data that shows a rise in the supply of occupational therapists in Canada, but we continue to be concerned about the ability of the Canadian public to receive occupational therapy services,” said Dr. Susan Forwell, CAOT president. “The number of occupational therapists may have increased, but shortages are reported in many provinces, particularly in rural areas.”

The CIHI report indicates that 90% of the 11,400 occupational therapists in Canada work in an urban centre. Almost one-third are also employed in part-time positions, further reducing the availability of services to meet the rising need for occupational therapy.

The need for occupational therapy services is increasing due to the aging population, greater awareness of the needs of individuals with disabilities, deinstitutionalization of persons with mental illness and recognition of the value of rehabilitation. As a result, a recent CAOT review of labour market information and workforce studies indicates a strong demand for occupational therapists across Canada.

Maltreated refugees, forgotten soldiers

Posted by Bryanton Post on Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 @ 11:56 am in Politics.

Take a look at the sad plight of these Bhutanese refugees.

The video can be seen here.

Here's what the London-based news agency Journeyman Pictures wrote about the video:

"Why did India open fire on thousands of Bhutanese refugees, trying to cross peacefully into India on their way home? This investigation includes rare footage of the shooting.
Shouting "Bhutan is our homeland", thousands of refugees attempt to stream across the Nepal-India border to go home to Bhutan. But the area is soon flooded with Indian security guards and shots ring out. Two people are killed and hundreds wounded."

These Hindu refugees are descendants from the Nepalese who settled in Bhutan centuries ago. But most of the population of Bhutan are Buddhist. In 1990, the King suddenly withdrew the Hindus' citizenship and forced them out. India allowed them safe passage to reach Nepal but now refuses to let them return to Bhutan. As one man laments: 'We are living a life that is worse than that of animals'."

Journeyman Pictures has other eye-opening video features as well. One good feature it did was about how thousands of American soldiers returning from Iraq have severe mental problems. "They feel abandoned by the Bush administration and claim officials are trying to hide the true scale of the problem," according to the report.

Response to Intervention (RTI)

Posted by Ang Therapist on Monday, November 26th, 2007 @ 6:52 pm in Lifestyle, Miscellaneous.

There is a new process called Response to Intervention that is being introduced in schools in the United States. Its purpose is to “provide a safety net for at-risk readers, some of whom have learning disabilities. The idea is to catch students when they begin to struggle, so they can succeed without being ‘labeled.’”

Here is an excerpt from a primer for parents provided by the National Association of School Psychologists so that you can understand the program more.

[…] Simply, “Response to Intervention” refers to a process that emphasizes how well students respond to changes in instruction. The essential elements of an RTI approach are: the provision of scientific, research-based instruction and interventions in general education; monitoring and measurement of student progress in response to the instruction and interventions; and use of these measures of student progress to shape instruction and make educational decisions. […]

[…] Response to Intervention (RTI) is an array of procedures that can be used to determine if and how students respond to specific changes in instruction. RTI provides an improved process and structure for school teams in designing, implementing, and evaluating educational interventions. […]

A peace-full return to Manila

Posted by Bryanton Post on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 @ 11:22 pm in Politics.

Just came back from the Peace Journalism Seminar of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR).

It was my first time to attend an actual seminar on peace journalism, although I had already finished a six-month online course on Peace and Conflict Reporting at the Konrad Adenauer Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University. I am sure a lot of the participants, including the CMFR staff, learned so much from the seminar. The seminar made me think on how I look at reports on conflict and peace, and how I--whether subconsciously or not--still have ill-conceived notions and stereotypes against certain individuals and groups.

I'll tell you more details (and photos) later. Lots of news to read and things to do.

Meanwhile here's Janette Toral on a recent iBlog "mini" summit on blogging and the upcoming 2010 elections. The CMFR's findings on the media coverage of this year's senatorial and party-list elections were discussed in the forum.

Bloggers as Election Watchdog
Philippines Election Journal
November 25, 2007

When the idea of having a blogging and the 2010 elections forum first came to mind, Luz Rimban is one of those I consulted about it. Last Saturday, that finally happened with Luz, Atty. JJ Disini, and Rachel Khan in the panel.

Luz shared her perspective on bloggers acting as election watchdogs. She started by citing the various gaps noticed by CMFR in the 2004 and 2007 elections that includes:

* There were gaps in reportage in 2004 primarily on party-list elections, local elections, senatorial elections, and policy development issues.

* In 2007, coverage was not as extensive partly due public disinterest and skepticism over electoral institutions. Coverage were more focused on Team Unity versus Genuine Opposition.

* There were key issues that failed to turn out as election issues such as
  • Hello Garci scandal
  • Extra-judicial killings
  • Corruption
* Linking of local issues and elections with national issues and contests did not happen either.

Pinay Sex Scandal

Posted by Culture Shiok! Singapore OFW on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 @ 11:50 am in Personal - International.

When using misleading titles is the right thing...

The word "Pinay" refers to a female Pinoy or Filipino. It's the same as "Filipina." "Pinay sex scandal" and "Pinay scandal" are getting some attention lately, as shown in Google Trends. It shows how often they've been searched on Google over time.

Despite projects aimed at reshaping the Filipina image online, the number of prostitution-related sites and their users is just simply overwhelming.

There's a mini SEO experiment currently running in the Philippine Blogosphere which targets these sites to divert some traffic and eventually push the actual scandal sites out of Google's first few search result pages. It was started by Marghil at macuha.com "Pinay scandal".

So when you search Google for "Pinay scandal," don't be surprise if you end-up seeing most of the posts below:

Dengue Fever

Posted by on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 @ 7:36 am in Miscellaneous.

My daughter woke up suffering from high fever last Wednesday, November 14. As always, we (my wife Lynn and I) personally took care of Mitzi — taking of her temperature, giving medicines, etc… We are very cautious of our children’s health especially now that Antipolo is being closely watched and declared by the government as dengue infested area…

Later that day, I brought my daughter to

Advertlets response: Straight from Josh Lim

Posted by Culture Shiok! Singapore OFW on Sunday, November 25th, 2007 @ 4:46 am in Personal - International.

In my previous post, I mentioned that my Advertlets earnings slowed down to an almost frozen state. I didn't blog about it to get their attention but, to my surprise, I immediately received a comment from Josh Lim of Advertlets. He was quick to say that they have checked my account and said "it appears to be fine."

He continued by giving some tips on which ads to install to optimize my earnings:

- Installing the 165x240 sidebar ad higher up the page. We noticed it is installed quite low down the page.
- Installing the 336x280 ad instead of the 180x150 ad (more ads available for the 336x280 format). The 336x280 format goes best after posts.

He said the majority of earnings would come from Malaysian/Singaporean traffic at the moment. I'm sure he's referring to the upcoming CPM ads. I just hope we can all benefit from them.

Thanks for the quick response Josh!
