Moving out to wordpress or not

Posted by Batang Yagit on Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 @ 11:29 pm in Personal - Philippines.

I have been contemplating on moving out to a new blog platform this last few weeks. I already asked Jehz and a couple of bloggers if I should or should not move to a new platform. My desires of leaving blogger for a newer platform increases everyday. I find a lot of needs which my existing platform can not provide.

I'm eyeing on migrating my BatangYagit.com to wordpress. Most of my non-blogger blogs are using Wordpress. I find wordpress more robust as compared to Blogger. Back-end design is also easier using wordpress, so as front-end design and blog aesthetics.

The cons of moving to wordpress are the following:
  • It needs more maintenance. I have to make sure that my blog uses the most up-to-date version of wordpress. And sometimes, upgrading is a pain in the neck specially on a major version change.
  • High risk of losing traffic. Since I'll be moving out to a new platform, there is a risk of losing traffic since the URL of my posts will be changed. A large number of my previous posts are optimized for search engine traffic.
  • Paid bandwidth. Since it is self hosted, I'd be spending money for my bandwidth. My blog will have limited amount of resources. There is no assurance that my blog will be up forever.
  • Need for a hosting provider. I have an existing web host but I don't think it can manage to have another load of traffic. My idea is to get a new hosting account from Gossimer.com. I've been looking into their services and find them ok. They have a few selection of hosting plans I can choose from. I'm deciding if I'd go for their Starter Plan or go big time with their Business Plan.
Up 'til now, I haven't decided yet. I'm still on the process of thinking whether my advantages outweighs the cons that I have mentioned.

Time & place
28 February 2008 at the Holiday Inn, Bristol

Conference format
This study day, organised by the Ergonomics Society, is aimed at people who would either like to start doing health-based ergonomic workplace assessments, or would like to improve their practice. This includes therapists, nurses, ergonomists, and health & safety practitioners.

Format
The format of the day is a mix of practical workshops and lectures, providing plenty of opportunity to experiment with new skills, discuss specific areas of assessment, and network with colleagues. The lectures and workshops will follow the process of assessment through to recommendations, and will include sessions on:

  • The assessment process and notation of findings. This session will help you structure your assessment. Is it always necessary to use a recognised assessment, and do these assessments fulfil your needs?
  • Understanding the impact of static and dynamic work on the musculoskeletal system. Many activities include components of both static and dynamic muscle activity which impact on the body in different ways. However, the complexity of these forces is often overlooked during assessment.
  • The identification of physical risk factors in the workplace. A practical workshop highlighting the different forces generated by the body during different activities.

Mailboxes etc.

Posted by alohapenny on Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 @ 5:28 am in Personal - International.

I find mailboxes really cute, don't you just love them? I used to love drawing as a kid, who doesn't? And I specifically remember every time I drew a house, with a garden and a doghouse, I can never forget the mailbox out front. The traditional residential mailboxes I drew, I color them yellow and then red for the flag. I even had a lunch box which is a total replica of a mailbox, not as big though. During the time I got it as a gift, I was a little too old to bring lunch boxes to school so I put it in my room and placed stationeries in it. As a kid, you would only have one image of a certain thing in your mind. That's how I imagined mailboxes, yellow box and red flag, I never thought it had so many variations like the commercial mailboxes, single and multi unit mailboxes, one that you can mount on your wall, and post mount mailboxes. Nowadays, it is being manufactured by a lot of big companies who are dedicated to high quality and sold all over the world.
