Sensory Integration Workshop Series 2008
Here is a basic summary of the topics to be covered for this year’s Sensory Integration Workshop series.
Life Skills Therapy Center and Therapy Works, Inc. present The Sensory Integration Workshop Series.
This workshop series is aimed at helping professionals gain knowledge and skills in using the sensory integration approach. It consists of 5 workshops designed to systematically present sensory integration both as a theory and as an approach to managing the difficulties of children with various conditions. The workshop series will provide participants to actively learn about SI theory and research, engage in assessment, intervention planning and intervention implementation. Each workshop is 7 hours long and some courses have limited slots in order to ensure optimal learning for the participants.
Course I - Getting into the Heart of SensoryIntegration: Understanding the Theory and its Implications for Practice (January 27, 2008)
This course is designed to equip participants with in-depth knowledge of Sensory Integration theory and research. It relates sensory integrative function with behavior and learning throughout the lifespan. Neuroscientific research underlying SI, different
taxonomies of dysfunctions of sensory integration (DSI), and behaviors observed in children with DSI will be discussed. Finally, SI is compared and contrasted with other approaches such as ABA, DIR, Gymboree and sound-based therapies (e.g. Samonas) among others. Available Slots: 40
Course 2 - Assessment of Sensory Processing Skills Using Standardized and Non-Standardized Methods
Planning and implementing effective intervention is contingent upon an accurate and comprehensive assessment. This workshop is designed to help professionals gain knowledge and skills in assessing sensory processing skills using standardized and non-standardized approaches. A critique of the different assessment tools will be presented. Participants will be given the opportunity to
administer and interpret different assessment tools including:
1. Sensory Profile
2. Sensory Profile for Infants and Toddlers
3. Sensory Profile for Adolescents and Adults
4. Sensory Profile School Companion
5. Sensory Processing Measure
6. Touch Inventory for Elementary School Children

Course 3 - Planning Intervention Using a Sensory Integration Framework
This workshop is designed to help participants gain knowledge and skills in organizing and interpreting test scores and clinical observations; planning intervention; using the STEP-SI Model of Clinical Reasoning to establish specific goals and priorities for intervention; conducting re-appraisal and dynamic assessment of Sensory Integration. Participants will be provided opportunities to determine sensory processing patterns from standardized testing and use different methods of establishing and writing goals and priorities and documenting change and progress.

Course 4 - Implementing Sensory Integration-Based Intervention
Intervention using a sensory integration framework has several distinct characteristics. Many practitioners confuse sensory integration intervention with other approaches. This workshop will discuss the characteristics of intervention using a sensory
integration framework as originally formulated by Dr. A. Jean Ayres. It will present specific intervention guidelines for addressing different dysfunctions of sensory integration including sensory modulation, sensory discrimination and praxis problems across the
lifespan. Strategies on combining sensory integration with other approaches will be discussed. Participants will be provided with the opportunity to view actual sensory integration interventions and try out some of these interventions.

Course 5 - Using Sensory Integration with Different Populations
The boundaries of classical SI intervention have been stretched the past few years. The theory is now used to address difficulties of children with varied conditions including cerebral palsy, AD/HD, visual impairment, Fragile X Syndrome and among others. This
workshop will discuss the sensory processing patterns of children with different conditions and implications of such sensory patterns on their life participation, assessment and intervention. Researches specific to each condition will be presented. Assessment and intervention guidelines for specific conditions will be provided.

NOTE:
Those who have attended the theory part last year can take Courses 2-5. Those who finished the entire workshop series last year can opt to just take Course 5 or any of the courses as refresher.
Speaker’s Profile
R. Lyle Duque, MScOT, OTRP obtained his bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of the Philippines Manila and his master of science in OT by advanced degree from the University of Plymouth (UK). He is the founder and program director of Life Skills Therapy Center. He is currently the chief OT at the Learning Partners School Inc and senior OT at Therapy Works. He is the founding editor of the Philippine Journal of Occupational Therapy. He has presented at national and international conferences and has been the recipient of research grants including one from the National Institutes of Health. He has received training in the
use of the CO-OP Protocol and has started the SIPT Certification Program provided by the WPS and the University of Southern California.
