Kris Aquino is proving to be ABS-CBN's top drawer as both of her shows topped the daytime and primetime slots among Kapamilya programs. Kris's new game show, Wheel of Fortune, premiered last Jan. 14 at No. 4 with 17.2 percent and it moved to No. 3 the following day, Jan. 15, and held on to it until yesterday, Jan. 17.

Meanwhile, Kris's horror series, Patayin Sa Sindak Si Barbara, is also the best rater among ABS-CBN primetime shows, although it just managed to grab the seventh slot behind six GMA-7 shows.

The Kapuso network's very own horror series, La Vendetta, is enjoying its best numbers yet as it comes to an end tonight, Jan. 18. After opening the week at No. 5, La Vendetta moved to No. 3 on Tuesday and moved again to No. 2 on Wednesday and Thursday.

Daisy Siete and Eat Bulaga! alternately took the No. 1 slot in the daytime race. Daisy Siete was on top on Monday and Wednesday while Eat Bulaga! was No. 1 on Tuesday and Thursday.

Marimar, on the other hand, continues to hold on to its position as the No. 1 primetime program.

Kristine Hermosa is world famous

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture & Inspiration Blog on Sunday, January 27th, 2008 @ 9:29 am in Entertainment.

Many Filipinos don't realize it, but Kristine Hermosa, Jericho Rosales, Diether Ocampo, and Angelika de la Cruz are world famous, and I'm not just talking about among our own Filipino people living overseas. Their telenovelas are the most popular, highest rating shows in countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Kenya, Ghana, Cameroon, Tanzania, Namibia, and Zamba, where they're all dubbed in the local languages and watched by the local people. Pangako Sa'yo was all the way back in 2000, but ABS-CBN is exporting it to other countries as The Promise, among other past productions like the one in 2005 with Diether Ocampo and Kristine Hermosa, and they love it. They love Filipino shows, and that should make any Pinoy proud. And I'm so humbled and thankful to our world friends from all those great countries for supporting our country and our products. Besides the presidents and former presidents' wives of course, Kristine Hermosa is probably one of the most recognized Filipina women in the world among non-Filipinos. Here they are being interviewed on Malaysian TV:

Video Clip: Daniela popular ABS-CBN novela

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture & Inspiration Blog on Sunday, January 27th, 2008 @ 8:35 am in Entertainment.

Telenovelas are making a comeback again in the Philippines thanks to Marimar and Rosalinda, and it seems logical to post video flashbacks of the Philippine's most favorite ones, so that's what we'll do, so enjoy this special flashback clip of the TVnovela "Daniela" which was a ratings boom for ABS-CBN. I never saw this novela, but I wish I did because it looks great, and reading what other Pinoys have wrote about this novela on the web, I totally want to watch it. I'm just testing out the new code for the FLV player, you reap the benefits, hehe. It's not airing right now in L.A., but friends tell me this novela is airing in some Telemundo markets in the US, a boon for those Pinoys who watched it a few years ago, and want to watch it again. English subtitles on CC3.

Rosalinda on QTV Philippines, Philippine Cable service doesn’t make sense

Posted by Filipino Cultured - Art, Entertainment, Culture & Inspiration Blog on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 @ 4:03 pm in Entertainment.

Rosalinda is showing on QTV, Mondays - Fridays at 8 pm. I think GMA is preparing the audience and wetting their appetite for the Filipino remake of Rosalinda, which is to start production this year. After Marimar was a hit for GMA, ABS-CBN followed the bandwagon and was in talks to remake Rosalinda into a Filipino version starring Angel Locsin, but GMA beat them to the punch and bought the rights from Mexican TV company Televisa first. I have a feeling it will star Marian Rivera, because I don't see anyone else who could do this role now that she's the new Angel Locsin, so to speak. Poor Angel Locsin, I really loved her. But even though this role in Rosalinda is almost exactly the same role as in Marimar, and it will be done again by Marian Rivera, it doesn't really make any difference because Thalia played almost the same poor girl character in all the three "Maria" novelas, and it was still a hit, because it was done by Thalia. As far as Marian Rivera having that same star power waits to be seen, but I think she will if she just keeps riding this upswing in her career well.

As far as who'll play Fernando Carrillo's role, I think GMA is going to choose Richard Gutierrez, even though he doesn't fit the role, and he's too young, it's gonna be him anyway just for the fact that they need star power to vehicle this novela, and Marian Rivera who will be a superstar by the time the novela shows based on the overpublicity she's getting now, plus Richard Gutierrez = ratings heaven for GMA. But if you ask me, Richard Gomez fits the role more, but they won't choose him because he's too old, and in the Philippines, since kids graduate at 16, once a celebrity hits 24, people think they're old already. And once you hit 30, unless you've established yourself as a qualified superstar by this age, you're practically ancient in Philippines showbiz.

You know what doesn't make any sense in the Philippines?
On cable, the only Spanish channel they have is TV Española, which doesn't get high ratings because

#1: it's all in Spanish without subtitles, which most Filipinos don't understand
#2: it only has boring news shows, boring talk shows, and boring cooking shows all day long, which most Filipinos don't understand, nor would want to watch

If the cable company chooses at least one international cable channel in Spanish to show in the Philippines, why don't they choose Telemundo, which has English subtitles via Closed Captioning, or Univision/Televisa instead of TV Española, since most of the telenovelas that Filipinos have a fondness for, and most of their favorite telenovela stars from the heydey of it a few years ago: Thalia, Fernando Carrillo, Gabriela Spanic, Laura Flores, are on Televisa and Telemundo? Filipinos don't care about the celebrities they show on TV Española, because they're all from Spain, Filipinos don't know or care about Spanish celebrities. Besides my beloved Penelope Cruz, I don't even know many Spanish celebrities, nor do I care to know since it doesn't really interest me. But Filipinos do know tons of celebs from Latin America from their favorite telenovelas, if the Philippine cable companies want to get better viewership and more subscriptions, it doesn't make any sense that they get a TV station from Spain, TV Española instead of Telemundo (from the US) or Televisa (Mexico), since most Filipinos don't care about what's happening in Spain, but they do want to know what's happening with Thalia and the telenovela world in Mexico, Latin America, and the US, which you will find on Televisa, Univision, or Telemundo (and with English closed captioning), but won't find on TV Española. Even Spaniards don't like to watch TV Española, they call it "telebasura", but that's the only Spanish channel they have in the Philippines. Studies show that Spanish is the most popularly chosen foreign language to learn in the schools and universities in the Philippines, many Filipinos have the choice of Chinese, French, Italian, etc., but the foreign language that is most chosen by Filipinos is Spanish, but the only channel available to Spanish language students in the Philippines to help them learn and improve their Spanish is the most boring Spanish channel in the world full of telebasura, as the Spaniards say. That's just great, it's no wonder. They should have Televisa or Telemundo, since most of the telenovelas that Filipinos loved (Marimar, Rosalinda) were from Televisa or Telemundo, and students in the Philippines learning Spanish will learn Spanish better watching their favorite actors and actresses, rather than the crap they show on TV Española, and it is crap because I watched it when I was there in Manila, and it's total crap they show on that channel, I was so bored just minutes watching it. The only interesting thing that came on was a Rafael Nadal tennis match, but wait, that wasn't even on TV Española, that was on the Sports network, so that doesn't count, hehe.

Also, they have Korean channels and Japanese channels on Philippine cable, but they don't have English subtitles. What's the point of having those channels, having access to all of these great Asian series, if Filipinos can't understand them when they watch it because it's all in Japanese or Korean with no English subtitles?

If you ask me, it's quite obvious that the Philippine cable companies are catering more to the foreign businessmen in the country, than to their own countrymen, and that's why the cable that Filipinos pay for monthly are filled with TV Española (for Spanish businessmen), Japanese (Japanese businessmen), Korean (Korean businessmen), and Arabic (for businessmen from the Middle East) TV stations that most Filipinos won't even watch due to a language barrier, and that sucks. That totally sucks, because the cable should be prioritized to the Filipino masses, not to businessmen who visit the country for only a few months or weeks and leave.

New things to add in the list of things that don't make sense in the Philippines, hehe, sadly, hehe.

Rosalinda Opening Credits

Fernando Carrillo singing a rock song from Rosalinda
Speaking of Fernando Carrillo, he's been doing movies for the past few years, and he's returning to television in a new telenovela called El Engaño on Telemundo really soon since Telemundo is showing promos of his new novela right now, which means it will probably be next month. And lucky for you Pinays living in the US that it's on Telemundo and not Univision, which means that you can watch it from the beginning and understand it even though it's in Spanish, because Telemundo provides English closed captioning on CC3. Up to the Minute Update, Fernando Carrillo has been let out of his mulit-million dollar contract with NBC Telemundo, and replaced with Christian Meier, the star of Zorro which is showing right now on ABS-CBN. This means that Doña Barbara, the new upcoming telenovela starring another Filipino favorite: Gabriela Spanic, will have to look for a new leading man now that NBC-USA-Telemundo has bumped Meier out of that novela to this one:

Fernando Carrillo and Telemundo Part Ways

As the network searches his replacement for El engaño, the media attribute his departure to diva behavior

Venezuelan actor Fernando Carrillo has abandoned recordings for the upcoming Telemundo telenovela El engaño, a series that will star fellow Venezuelan, actress Gaby Espino. The news was confirmed in a press release from the network, and even though the motives behind his departure weren’t explained, the Venezuelan media speculate that the actor’s demands were beginning to conflict with his work.

Carrillo, 42, had signed a two-year exclusivity contract with Telemundo, whose parent company is NBC, but the actor’s relationship with the network ended today. “Telemundo studios has made the creative decision to search for someone more in line with the show and its production needs,” a press release announced.
But the media in his country are telling a different story. Supposedly, the actor tried to organize a strike in favor of an eight-hour work day. The press also report that his star status was going to his head, as he was constantly asking for time off to travel and making demands for privileges not included in his contract.

It was also said that the actor was making $50,000 a month, on top of having his apartment, car, cell phone and a piano he requested paid for. None of these rumors have been confirmed. Of the actor, the network stated: “We wish Fernando the best in his future projects.”

At the end of 2007, the actor told the press he was “very content with the new experience, the character, not to mention the great production from Telemundo, NBC Universal and an excellent cast. I couldn’t ask for a better cast, seriously. It’s a great constellation of Mexican stars.”

And now for the questions: What will Carrillo do now, and who will replace him? Some rumors suggest that Peruvian actor Christian Meier could take his place.

“As soon as we have news of a replacement, we’ll let you know,” ended the Telemundo statement.

Ruffa Gutierrez donates half million pesos to charity

Ruffa Gutierrez donates over half a million pesos to charity in two days

By Paul Mata - For the past two days, Ruffa Gutierrez has been quietly turning over the funds that were raised during RRRampa for a Cause. The bazaar and fashion show was held on September 16 last year. Ruffa, together with her brothers Richard and Raymond, called on their celebrity friends to help out in the event. Ruffa said they were able to raise about P1.7 million.

“Last year, we made P1 million which we gave to Unicef and the Philippine Red Cross. So, this year we decided to hati-hatiin yung mga naipon namin, yung na-i-raise naming funds. Make-A-Wish Foundation was P200,000. World Vision was P700,000. UNICEF, P500,000. And then, Asilo de Milagrosa in Cebu is P100,000,” Ruffa detailed.

Ruffa met with Make-A-Wish Foundation last Monday, January 14 at Sapori Trattoria restaurant in Greenhills. Ruffa was with her parents, Eddie Gutierrez and Annabelle Rama when they handed the cheque to Make-A-Wish President Ramon ‘Booie’ Segovia. The cheque amount of P200,000 will help around 15 to 20 children in their wish-granting programs.

“We would like to thank Ms Ruffa Gutierrez and her brothers who joined her also in RRRampa for a Cause. You know they make use of their celebrity status for positive socially relevant issues like helping our kids, most have cancer. With their donation, we would be able to grant wishes to our kids and make their lives more meaningful,” Booie Segovia said.

To which Ruffa replied, “As for me, I believe that me, my brothers, Richard and Raymond and our family, we’re just instruments of God. And I don’t think that we should be glorified. We’re being used as a tool to help others because I wanna use my being a celebrity, especially this year, to help others because God gave me a second chance to make a comeback for a reason. I just wanna enjoy my fame, and I wanna enjoy it in a good way.”

Ruffa added that she was also available for any wish-granting activities of Make-A-Wish.

Yesterday, January 15, Ruffa was joined by her brother Richard at the United Nations offices in Makati City to give their cheque to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund). Also with them were Ruffa’s kids, Lorin and Venice, and their mom Annabelle. Rhian Ramos, a close friend and Richard’s co-star in his Captain Barbell show also joined them.

“Parang advanced birthday celebration ‘to sa UNICEF. I’m just so happy, I’m just so blessed na yun, kasama ko yung family ko dito ngayon. At siyempre, gusto ko pasalamatan lahat ng mga artista from both networks na sumuporta sa event namin to make this all possible. Maraming salamat sa lahat ng kapwa artista. Sana patuloy ang pag-unite natin para makatulong,” Richard excitedly said.

“It’s really great to be reaching out, to be helping out and to be part of this event,” the star of Kamandag said. “I feel so blessed with my family that we were able to raise a lot of funds to help our children. But we are all just instruments of God for this event. He was the One who made this possible. He was the One who gave us inspiration.”

Loveless Richard. “For my birthday, you know it’s my first time that I’m not going to celebrate a big celebration. Siguro, intimate lang with the family and a few friends. Since this year, I told you that I’m very busy. So, sa mismong birthday ko, I’ll be working. I’m just spending my time with my co-actors,” when asked about his birthday plans.

But Richard was caught off guard with a question about his being loveless on his 24th birthday.

“Ano wish mo sa birthday mo, Chard? Loveless ka daw ngayon,” Ruffa threw the question.

“Loveless. Well, I have a lot of people who love me,” a surprised Richard told his sister while cameras were taping.

“Like…?” Ruffa continued.

“My family, my friends. And here, the people at Unicef. So, I’m very happy. This year, I just wanna continue working hard and give it back. I wanna organize an event this year with the family. Definitely, we’re gonna make it happen again,” Richard said as he smiled back at Ruffa.

Richard was also asked if he would consider dating once again, especially KC Concepcion. Her mother Sharon Cuneta kidded in her birthday concert last week that her daughter was available to be courted by any guy.

“I guess that’s very good news. Right now I’m very busy with work. I’m so busy. I’m focused this year. I wanna achieve a lot of goals this year. Do positive things. So, tingnan na lang muna natin. As of now kasi, I can’t afford na manligaw or magkaroon ng relationship kasi sobrang busy ko nga. Unfair naman. So, take one step at a time. Let’s see what happens this year,” Richard said. -PEP
